FACILITIES

Goshen College student-athletes train and compete in one of the best small college athletic facilities in the nation. The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate athletic teams and is one of the newest additions to an ever-growing col-lege campus. The $7.3 million facility houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Whether you are a member of the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a basket-ball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes every chance to train and compete successfully.

The luxury of such a large athletic training facility allows athletes to train when their schedule permits. The recreation-fitness center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout

the week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. With these hours, athletes also have the opportunity to train and compete without sacrificing their academic pursuits. During their respective seasons, Goshen teams can all take advantage of the facility in a three-hour time frame and are not forced to practice at odd hours. The spring sports season brings five Goshen teams into the facility at one time. The golf team is able to hit balls in one area, while the softball team takes cuts in the batting cage, the baseball team has infield practice and the track-and-field squad trains on the indoor track. Not many institutions can boast of such an efficient use of time or space, and that is one reason Goshen has continued to excel both athletically and academically.

Outdoor Facilities• Cross-country course with custom-built hills• 10 tennis courts; six have lighting• 400-meter track and field complex• 2 sand volleyball courts• 3-hole golf course• Soccer field with lights and seating for 1,500 fans• 3 separate practice fields• Baseball field: Completely fenced with press box and enlarged dugouts• Softball field: Completely fenced with press box and newly built dugouts

COACHING STAFF

7 – MAPLE LEAFS CROSS COUNTRY

Doug Yoder begins his sixth season as head cross country coach in 2009, presiding as the Leafs’ sixth cross country coach in program history. Yoder, a long-time Goshen High School running coach and two-year Goshen College assistant track coach acquired his first opportunity at a collegiate head coaching position with the Leafs’ long-distance program. “You look at distance running philosophically, and it’s something that’s hard to do, it’s time consuming and most other sports use running as a form of punishment,” Yoder said. “But in that framework I try to make it fun. I’ve learned a lot from my own running, and I think athletes can make a lot of connections from the sport to other areas of their lives, such as study habits and decision making.” Yoder began coaching at the college level after 25 years of work in coaching track and cross country at Goshen High School. Yoder was an assistant boys’ track coach from 1979-1990 and was the head girls’ track coach for the Redskins from 1991-2003. Yoder added girls’ head cross country responsibilities in 1992, a position he kept until the fall of 2004. Yoder also serves as director of Goshen’s athletic facility — the Roman Gingerich Center — in conjunction with his coaching role at Goshen College.
