6 Xerox Next Generation Smart Controller – IT Paper
The front control panel of new Xerox MFPs has been enhanced with large color icons and easy navigation. Most everyday tasks are on the top level of the first screen, providing fast, easy access to basic features.
New speed and network protocolsThe Next Generation Smart Controller adds support for 10/100BaseT and Gigabit Ethernet which allows users to send and receive jobs at maximum performance. Flexible connection speeds allow workgroups to avoid network bottlenecks when users print large, color- and graphic-intense documents. Print jobs are transferred quickly from the desktop to the printer in a matter of seconds, at 1 GB per second. Increased throughput eliminates wait time at the printer and lets users get more work done via their connected MFPs.
The Next Generation Smart Controller offers enhancement to the IPv6, 802.1x authentication and Network Time Protocol. In addition, support for Web Services for Devices is added.
As more customers migrate to the next-generation addressing and routing protocol for the Internet, IPv6, the new Xerox controller supports printing, scanning, device discovery, software upgrades and authentication in an IPv6 environment. With IPSec, an integral component of IPv6, Xerox customers can be assured of the most powerful and versatile security measures available. IPSec encrypts network traffic, authenticates and verifies integrity of all transmitted data.
Another network authentication standard that has grown in popularity is 802.1x, a port-based network-access control that was once only deployed for wireless networks, but has become increasingly incorporated as part of wired networks. The new Xerox Smart Controller supports Extensible Authentication Protocols (EAP) types MD5, PEAPv0 and MS-CHAPv2.
With Web Services for Devices (WSD), discovering devices on the network is dynamic and as simple as plugging in a USB drive. MFPs can be automatically configured from the client workstation. Users can print via WSD as well as receive dynamic job status and printer alerts—such as when the printer is out of paper, low on supplies or requires other resources, with notifications right at the desktop.

Smart print features and green printingXerox print driver pre-configurations and automatic intelligent application setting allow for not only improved productivity but also for cost savings and environmental sustainability. A large set of green printing options, such as default duplex, proof print, no banner, recycled paper and draft mode, allows users to save paper, toner and cost. Bi-directional communication within the print driver allows users to select the right device for their printing needs.
With smart duplexing, Xerox’s new controller automatically detects one-page print jobs and ignores the duplex command so that the job is fed and printed as a one-page simplex job.
XPS printing is available in the Windows Vista environment. An embedded interpreter supports direct printing of PDF 1.6.
Additional fonts have been added to the standard font list. Users can also download commonly used fonts to the device’s hard disk for future use, saving time on regular print jobs that require a non-resident font.
The new controller supports automatic tray selection, print around, PostScript and PCL job-switching features.
Web links in the print drivers give users a direct connection to additional troubleshooting information available on xerox.com.
PostScript, PCL, PDF and TIFF files can be submitted directly to the device for printing without the print driver. Xerox Print Drivers are Microsoft WHQL-certified as well as Citrix-ready, as listed on Citrix.com
USB ports on the controller also act as USB targets to enable client printing. For example, a user can plug a laptop computer into the target USB port and use the MFP as the printer for their laptop.
The new Xerox Global Print Driver lets IT managers qualify, deploy and manage all print devices with a single driver. It also greatly simplifies the replacement or updates required for network print devices and updates users’ feature options, without the need for requalification or reinstallation.
This is a truly universal print driver that allows users to print to virtually any printer or multifunction printer, including other manufacturers. It supports both PCL and PostScript. Because it’s so easy to use across an enterprise, this driver significantly reduces IT’s time and involvement in printer management. This in turn helps to extend tight IT budgets.
For users who travel frequently, the Xerox Mobile Express Driver offers the flexibility to automatically locate the nearest Xerox printer, and connect and print to it.
