He’s made no attempt to change dogma or override any of his predecessors in matters of faith or morals. That’s not what popes do. But he has made a conscious effort to look at the institutions we have created and ask ourselves if, perhaps, there is a better way of doing this. Catholic education is not immune from this examination. In the Holy Father’s February 13 address to the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education, he proposed three items for consideration: the value of dialogue in education; the qualified preparation of educators; and the responsibility of educational institutions to express the living presence of the Gospel in the fields of education, science, and culture. So how does Francis’ address affect Xavier High School, nearly 4,735 miles from the Vatican? Addressing the first point, he reminds us that our Catholic schools can be places where we share all that makes us Catholic with those who might not be Catholic, or might have lost some of the zeal for our faith over the years. He encourages us not to demonize those whose beliefs might be different from our own, but to take the basket off our light and lead by example. And that goes for the classroom, the community, and the playing field. I often hear Xavier graduates talk about how well prepared they are for college. That’s not just academically. Our graduates are well grounded with a moral and ethical compass that is second to none. Leading by example is the new evangelization. With regard to his second point, and cognizant of the times in which we live, the Pope remarked that education today “is guided by a changing generation, and that…every educator – and the Church as a whole is an educating mother – is required to change, in the sense of knowing how to communicate with the young.” That doesn’t mean we water down our theology or sugarcoat our academic standards at every grade level. It also doesn’t mean that we look at a new way of educating our Catholic youth and choose to reject it because it is…well, new. It means that we might need to shift gears and find new ways to communicate and educate our youth in a way that is meaningful, effective, and true to who we are as Catholics in a 21 st century world. Finally, the Holy Father implores us “to express the living presence of the Gospel in the field of education, science and culture.” He reiterates the need for Catholic academic institutions to avoid “isolating themselves in the world,” but instead to “know how to enter, with courage, into the Areopagus (high court) of contemporary cultures and to initiate dialogue, aware of the gift they are able to offer to all.” Let’s embrace the Holy Father’s exhortation to let our Catholic identity and zeal become a beacon of light for all those whom we touch. Let’s pledge to evangelization through our witness. Let’s offer hope for the changing generation of Catholics by meeting them on their turf. And through our educational ministry, let’s express the living presence of the Gospel in our lives, every day. During this Lenten season let’s continue to pray for each other and for the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School System. Dear Parents and Friends of Xavier: “Catholic education is one of the most important challenges for the Church, currently committed to new evangelization in an historical and cultural context that is undergoing constant transformation.” Pope Francis It seems like every day we listen to a newscast or monitor social media, and learn that Pope Francis seems to be challenging Catholics to get back to basics and try to look at the world through a very different lens. Your cooperation in reporting absentees is sincerely appreciated. With the flu and cold season upon us, it is important for you to remember that in your absence we cannot release your student to another adult unless you have specified that in writing on your registration application. This is the case even if your senior is 18 years of age. Also, if you are planning a vacation that does not coincide with the vacation that is scheduled in our school calendar, it is your responsibility to write a note to the school, stating the days your student will be missing. That note must then be initialed by each of your student’s teachers and returned to Carla Oudenhoven or Beth Rippl. You are reminded that although the absence is considered excused, the number of days missed is counted as part of the maximum of eight days allowed per term before grades are lowered.

National Merit Finalists Congratulations to George Fryda and Tyler Lifke for being named National Merit Finalists in the 2014 Merit Scholarship Competition. They are among the top 15,000 highest scorers in the nation on the PSAT test. This means that they are among the top 1% of the college-bound students in the country. These finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships. Congratulations to these talented and hard-working students.

Xavier Honor Society Xavier has transitioned from the National Honor Society to the Xavier Honor Society in an effort to make the criteria as objective as possible. The subjectivity of judging a student’s leadership and character has been eliminated. Criteria have been established in the areas of academics, co-curricular involvement (fine arts, athletics, clubs and community organizations), service and behavior (honor card rating, detentions and suspensions). Students should know that they qualify for the Xavier Honor Society when they apply because a point system will be used and a certain point total will be required. See enclosed article that describes the additional responsibilities and expectations that go with being a member of the Xavier Honor Society. The Xavier Honor Society induction ceremony will take place on the same evening as the World Language Honor Society on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. Cords will be awarded to inductees which can be worn at graduation. Applications for admission to the Xavier Honor Society are due on March 19, 2014.

Valedictorian & Salutatorian Congratulations to Michael Semanek for earning the highest grade point average in the graduating class. He is the valedictorian of the Class of 2014. Michael is the son of Paul and Sue Semanek. Congratulations to Kate Parks for

earning the second highest grade point average. She is the salutatorian of the class. Kate is the daughter of Michael and Alice Parks.

Drug Dogs In order to maintain a safe environment and to encourage good decision-making by our students, Xavier reserves the right to request police drug dogs to inspect the campus – including lockers, book bags and the parking lot.

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Xavier will be offering additional Project Lead the Way courses during the 2014-15 school year beginning this summer. PLTW is a national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum that has two tracks – one in engineering and one in biomedical sciences. These are project-based, hands-on classes that will allow students to explore their interests in these fields before college. Xavier initiated the program during the 2012-13 school year. This year, Introduction to Engineering Design (IED), Principles of Engineering (POE), Aerospace Engineering (AE) and Principles of Biomedical Sciences (PBS) were taught. These courses will continue to be offered during the summer and into the first semester of next school year or outside the school day from December through March. These classes are intended to be taken in addition to the core science classes. We are excited to offer PLTW and are looking for community partners as we implement this program. Community partners would serve on an advisory council, provide connections between students and professionals working in these fields, and provide financial support for equipment and training. Xavier teachers Robert Bires and Cathy Lambie can be contacted for more information.

Prom This year’s Prom will be held Saturday, April 12th at Butte des Morts Country Club from 7:30-midnight. Preparations are underway, but more involvement is always welcome. Please encourage your junior son or daughter to help make this event even more special by bringing their ideas to the Prom Committee meetings. Meetings are announced periodically through PowerSchool daily announcements and all juniors are welcome to attend these planning meetings. Juniors and seniors are invited to the prom, but due to the expense involved, freshmen are not allowed to participate in Prom. Sophomores may only be invited as the dates of juniors or seniors. We expect all attendees of the Prom to also attend the Post Prom, it is included in the price. Students who do not attend Prom may attend Post Prom. Tickets for just Post Prom are available in the main office. Parents, please do not sponsor get-togethers at your home after Prom in competition with the Post Prom party. We are in the planning stages and welcome any junior or senior parents who would like to get involved. This is a great way to provide a safe environment as well as making some lasting memories.

Policy Regarding Schedule Changes Students are given their schedule for the upcoming term, five days before the end of the present term. Students will have those five days to request a schedule change. Once the term has started the only change that can be made is for misplacement and that change has to take place within the first two days of the new term. No requests will be considered after that time has passed since classes move quickly in a block schedule. All schedule changes must be made by the student in writing, using the schedule change request forms available in the School Counseling Department and must be signed by a parent.

Food Fair Book Shoppe Looking for somewhere to donate your gently used books? Why not bring them to the Xavier office to be used at Food Fair!! We welcome hardbacks, paperbacks, CDs and DVDs, books on tape, as well as puzzles and video and board games. Proceeds from Food Fair go to tuition assistance for our students

Prospective Xavier Student? Shop and Compare

Do you have a middle school student who is considering which high school to attend in the future? We suggest that in order to make the best decision for your student, you should shop and compare. This can be done in a number of ways. If you would like to receive a tour of the school (preferably during school hours) or if your son/daughter would like to shadow a Xavier student for a day or half-day, please contact Associate Principal Donna Fahrenkrug at 882-6902.

Mock Trial Teams Dominate Once Again!

Congratulations to the 2013-2014 Xavier Mock Trial Teams! The Xavier varsity team placed first in the regional competition. The team heads to the state competition in Madison on March 9-10. The junior varsity team placed second at the regional competition, with their only loss being

to the XHS varsity team (by a very close margin!) The students have been meeting since early November to analyze the case, prepare their roles and work out their arguments. Students are responsible for mastering a monumental amount of information, including rules, procedures, and multiple pages of witness statements, exhibits and legal standards. They assume roles as either lawyers presenting the case and making arguments, or as witnesses who must make a convincing presentation of their facts. The witnesses are then cross examined by student attorneys from other teams before a panel of three judges decides which side has “won” that particular trial. This year’s case involves a case against Taylor Hamilton, a 15-year-old who is being accused of reckless driving. Taylor was driving to a popular hangout place (P-Cubed) with two friends on the night of the big football game. Alex Cooper left the game early because the team was losing. Alex cut through the woods and started to cross Nash Street behind the high school. As Alex crossed, she was hit by Taylor’s car and injured severely. Taylor claims that she was driving responsibly, and that Alex did not look both ways before crossing the street. Alex, however claims that she looked both ways and that Taylor must not have been paying attention to the road. Kirby Latanatto, an expert in accident reconstruction, testifies on behalf of Taylor. Jerry Houseman, a resident on Nash Street, was a witness to the event. Testifying in Alex’s defense are Blake Green, a passenger in the car, and Ryan Crowly, an expert in accident reconstruction. The impenetrable varsity team consists of Chris Rudolph, Katherine Paranica, Bridget Flaherty, Rachel Kubiak, Sarah Metropulos, Kristin Cherrier, Ben Bomier, Hannah Thiry, Bridget Harney, and Belinda Kaneza. Allie Schneider is the team’s official timekeeper. The JV team consists of: Elizabeth Totzke, Nicolas Nevins, Joelle Tremblay, Hunter Van Asten, Lauren Jamron, Ann Richey, Claire Schauf, Patrcia Lakatosova, Analiese Bradshaw, Brianna Banks, and Hattie Jacobson. The Mock Trial teams are coached by Attorney Amy Menzel, Attorney Mike Dally, Attorney Dan Flaherty, and Judge Mitch Metropulos. The students and coaches would like to thank the parents and volunteers for all of their support this season.

Congratulations to Xavier FBLA Congratulations are in order for the Xavier FBLA students competing at the regional competition in Kewaunee on Saturday, February 1st. As a team, Xavier placed third overall out of 31 high schools registered to compete. That is Xavier’s highest placement in recent history. Additionally, 21 individuals qualified to compete at the state competition in Appleton on April 7 & 8, 2014. The following individuals will be representing Xavier at this competition: Riley Chelsky, Alex DeBruin, Jeremiah Ellis, Matt Ferris, Alexis Quintero, Maria Schmitt, Morgan Collins, Meg Klister, Alma Estafani, Alex Heimerman, Caitlin O’Brien, Elise Henke, Ji Hwan Hyun, Bodam, Jeon, Jake Kim, Hayden Rasmussen, Nathan Upchurch, Michael Wolske, Gaby VandenHeuvel, Brett Engels, and Clarissa Gear. Congratulations to Xavier FBLA students, and best of luck at the state competition!

Math League Twelve freshmen and sophomores attended the JV Math League meet on February 3rd at Freedom High School. Individual medals were awarded to Mary Fryda, Santana Simon, Harold Xu, Emily Albrecht, Aaron Callahan, and Brianna Lynch. The highest scoring Xavier team earned 1st place in the small school division. Twenty-eight students attended the varsity Math League meet on February 10th at Kaukauna High school. The first team earned second place in the small school division. Michael Semanek, Yiquiz (Bob) Xin, Yizhe (Kevin) Zhang, and Santana Simon were awarded medals for their high individual scores. The last meet of the year will be on Monday, March 3th at Fox Valley Lutheran High School. New competitors are always welcome.

I am thankful that I attend Xavier because

I am able to be a part of a community

unlike any other. Xavier is full of people

who care about each other and who make

everyone feel welcome. I have met so

many amazing people and made so many

unforgettable memories since I started

school here. – Ben Bomier ‘16

March for Life 2014 More than 30 Xavier students , along with an additional 75 youth and adults from around the Diocese of Green Bay, marched for life on January 22 in Washington, DC. Our group joined thousands of groups from around the country to peacefully protest abortion on the 41st anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in the United States. The pilgrimage also included many opportunities to worship at Mass, participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, tour churches, visit museums, and discuss issues surrounding the sanctity of all human life. Next year’s Pilgrimage is already set for January 20-25, 2015. All are welcome! Student Reaction by Torey Gostas My name is Torey Gostas and I am a senior. This past March for Life has been my fourth one, and I plan to go each year until the killing of babies in the womb comes to an end here in our nation. Every year, the trip impacts me in a different way. Each of which I will never forget. Whether that is growing in my faith being with 100 high schoolers from our diocese, seeing over 400,000 pro-life young people, or going to Mass every day on the trip, I will never forget the March for Life Pilgrimage that our school is a part of. It's just a thing now for me, I go to Washington D.C. every year and my pro-life stance gets reaffirmed. Then I come home and it's so hard to be pro-life in all aspects of my life. But this past March for Life, has really taught me that you can't just live the pro-life message in D.C. once a year, being pro-life is a lifestyle. Abortion is a huge part of being pro-life, but there are so many other aspects that go into being pro-life. Respecting people, loving all people no matter their background and this March has taught me that we can be pro-life all the time. None of this though would be possible without the help from God. Abortion will never be illegal until enough of us come together united with the Holy Spirit to end this injustice. I know that we are the pro-life generation. With the help from God, we will make abortion illegal in the United States. I highly recommend this pilgrimage to every student at least once in their life. It is a truly a life-changing experience. Student Reaction by Kailyn Sitter A group of students and chaperones joined with other pilgrims from the Diocese of Green Bay in order to attend the annual March for Life in Washington D.C. After arriving in Washington D.C., the pilgrims experienced museums, discussions, and other tourist attractions that were thought-provoking, inspiring, and demonstrated the dignity of the human person. One of the most poignant moments was at the Holocaust Museum, where students were able to witness how disrespect for life by a group of people was able to inspire the mass killings of millions of people. Pilgrims carried the memories of the Holocaust Museum with them as they walked with 400,000 others during the March for Life. From the National Mall to the Supreme Court building, students and chaperones could peacefully protest in solidarity with people from all over the country—even those who kept the pilgrims in their prayers.

Campus Ministry The church enters the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday on March 5. With that comes many opportunities for our students and their families to grow in their faith. Here are some of the things we are offering through Xavier this year:

Reconciliation services: March 11 (freshmen), March 25 (sophomores), March 27 (juniors) and April 8 (seniors). All of these will be held at St Bernard Parish from 9-10:15 am. We have many generous priests who will give of their time to be present at each of these services so our students can participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Friday Morning Mass: We continue to have Mass

offered at 7 am each Friday morning in the chapel. Parents, grandparents, and friends of Xavier are always welcome to join us.

Stations of the Cross: Students can pray the Stations of

the Cross in the chapel during X period on Thursday, March 6, Friday, March 14, and Friday, April 11. We will also pray the Living Stations of the Cross as an entire school on Tuesday, April 15 at 10:30 am.

Weekly Mass St. Francis Xavier

Chapel

News & Notes Page 7

Rosary The rosary will be prayed each Thursday during X period in the chapel. Parents are always invited to join us!

Everyday Holiness In the first chapter of John, it went something like this: John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and said, "Behold the Lamb of God." Andrew heard what John the Baptist said and followed Jesus. Andrew then went and got his brother Peter. Jesus went to Galilee and found Philip and said, "Follow me". Philip went to get Nathanael and said, "Come and see." Can we be like Andrew and Philip? Let's go and get our friends and family and say:

"Come and see." "Come along to the Bible Study." "Come and see what is happening next week at the church event." "Come along to Mass this weekend." "Come and see what is going on at the soup kitchen/ mom and children shelter/after school program." "Come and see!"

Christian Service Hours Seniors are reminded that they must complete their Christian Service requirement before they graduate from Xavier. In addition to at least 80 hours of community service, they must fulfill the category requirements. Senior service hours are due by noon on Friday, May 23. Juniors are also reminded that they must be working on their Junior Service Project. Forms and guidelines can be found on the Campus Ministry Haiku Site. All service hour questions can be directed to our Campus Minister, Kelly Wilda, at 882-6909 or [email protected]. Underclass-man service hours are due by noon on Friday, June 6.

Xavier Recycles Its Food Waste Xavier continues with its partnership with Sanimax and UW-Oshkosh. Xavier students separate their food waste from the rest of the garbage at lunches. We are currently filling a 65 gallon barrel every two days with organic food waste and paper products. This food waste is then being transported by Sanimax to UW-Oshkosh to be used at its composting facility that produces energy for its campus. It is presently producing up to 5% of its energy from this plant. The Xavier student body is happy to be part of this conservation project. The following is an excerpt from an article that is on the UW-Oshkosh website at http://goo.gl/f7x13 that explains this facility and process a little bit more.

Since 2011, UW Oshkosh’s state-of-the-art Biodigester, developed in partnership with the UW Oshkosh Foundation and BIOFerm Energy Systems of Madison, has been using campus food waste, sourced agricultural plant waste and city of Oshkosh grass clippings in the production of biogas. The large indoor composting and energy production facility in Oshkosh houses the waste in airless fermentation chambers after it is mixed in a large bay. Biogas released by the decomposing organic material is captured and reused for heat and electricity. After 28 days, half of remaining material is reused for compost on local farms, and the other half is reused in a new fermenter batch. Nothing is wasted.

Xavier provides the

Knowledge of the Mind and the Wisdom of the Soul.

Perfect ACT Score

The Wisconsin ACT Council held its state conference in Madison in early February and recognized the high schools that had a student achieve a perfect 36 on the ACT test from the class of 2013. Xavier graduate, Jonathan Carroll ‘13, earned this recognition and we again congratulate him. According to Galen Johnson, ACT’s Midwest region assistant vice president, “Earning a top score of 36 on the ACT is an extremely strong academic achievement. The ACT is a curriculum-based exam that measures what students have learned in school. When a student earns a 36, it’s not only an indication of outstanding individual achievement but also a tribute to the quality of support and educational opportunities provided and facilitated by the school in which the student has learned.” In general, less than one-tenth of one percent of students who take the ACT Test earn a top composite score of 36. Of the more than 1.80 million students in the graduating class of 2013 who took the ACT Test across the nation, only 1162 achieved a 36. Xavier received a very nice plaque from the ACT Council in recognition of this achievement by Jonathan.

Safe Environment Training for Volunteers If you’re already a volunteer, thank you!! If not, please put your name in the hat now by getting our Safe Environment requirements checked off your list. Please check the Safe Environment link at the bot-tom of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic School Sys-tem homepage (www.acesxavier.k12.wi.us) for more details and links. In general, all volunteers for St. Francis Xavier Catholic Schools are required to: Complete an on-line application that also au-

thorizes a background check; and, Complete an Adult Awareness Training session

(aka Virtus training). These two items must be completed. We need all of our volunteers to be well-trained resources for our children and we want you as parents to know that your children are our top priority! Even if you don’t intend to volunteer, consider participating in this free program in order to better understand the ex-pectations we place on all our staff and volunteers. To begin, please contact Judy Roth at (920) 735-9380 or [email protected] to receive the access code necessary to complete an on-line application. If you need to complete an Adult Awareness Training session (VIRTUS ®), go to www.virtusonline.org Select “Registration” along the left-hand side of

the screen. Our location in the “list of sessions” is: Green

Bay Diocese. More information on the Safe Environment program sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay can be found at: www.gbdioc.org/protectingourchildren We appreciate the help that all our volunteers give us and we understand the time commitment that is necessary to complete the above requirements. Xavier would not be the same without your assistance. However, we hope that you agree that this is very important for the safety of our students.

Students at Catholic Colleges Graduate Sooner A recent report from the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) uses data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center to show undergraduate degree attainment rates for students after four, five, and six years of study. “Students who began and remained at a Catholic college in 2006 had significant degree attainment rates, with 48.4 percent achieving a degree from their original institution within four years, and 56.8 percent graduating with a degree in six years.” The report notes, “While Catholic college and university completion rates are similar to those at other private four-year institutions, the data show that those who begin at Catholic institutions tend to stay enrolled in their initial institution and reap the benefits of more rapid degree completion. This results in reduced costs associated with college expenses, as well as an earlier entry into the job market. Even students who began at a Catholic institution and then transferred had degree attainment rates well beyond those of students who initially enrolled in public or for-profit institutions.” This is especially important today, when “the average cost of a year of education, after scholarships and grants, at a four-year public campus is $12,800 and at a four-year private institution is $22,670.” Although the cost of a year of education after scholarship and grants at a Catholic campus is higher than the typical four-year public campus, students at Catholic colleges graduate faster and often save the cost of two years of education and begin earning sooner. For many students, this easily offsets the higher cost of the Catholic school. Bachelor’s Degree Attainment: Catholic Colleges and Universities Lead the Way, June 2013 is available from ACCU ( www.accunet.org/publications ). This article was printed in the Fall 2013 issue of The CARA Report. Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) is part of Georgetown University.

St. Francis Xavier Fund Advancement efforts continue for the St. Francis Xavier Fund. Your support of the St. Francis Xavier Fund is the best way to invest in and contribute to the education being provided to your

children. The reality is that today’s tuition costs cover only 60% of educational costs. The rest is made up by our local parishes, and gifts from parents, alumni, grandparents, families and friends. We need your help to support the mission of Xavier Catholic Schools. Letters were mailed to all families in December and information will be sent to parents again this spring. Please prayerfully consider supporting this effort if you have not done so already. Every gift matters and makes a difference in the education provided to your children. Thank you for your support

Attention Parents - Volunteers Are Needed Last year was a record year for Food Fair because of the fantastic volunteers who so generously donated their time. We are still in need of a few parent co-chairs for some areas of Food Fair this year. You will be teamed with experienced veterans who will work side by side with you the entire time. A great way to volunteer is to sign up with other parents you know. It’s best to have multiple co-chairs for each area to spread out the workload so we encourage you to contact your friends and sign up as a group. Please contact Food Fair Coordinator Chip Seidler at 450-0202 (or email [email protected]) as soon as possible to find out where we need help and choose the area where you would like to work. We will again be using online software SignUpGenius to make it easy for people to volunteer to work the day of Food Fair. Please watch for a separate Food Fair mailing and e-mails to learn more about signing up to help the day of the event.

Food Fair Silent Auction Looking for a great way to help out with Food Fair? This year we are looking for people to sign up to donate theme baskets for the silent auction. We are hoping to get at least 30 families to sign up to donate a basket. You can either determine your own theme or choose one from a list of baskets that have been done in prior years. Please email Julie Burkart at [email protected] to let her know that you would like to donate a basket and she will contact you to discuss a theme that is needed. New items and gift certificates are needed for the silent auc-tion. Do you have a new item you don’t need and would like to “re-gift” it to the Food Fair? Please drop it off at Xavier any time before April 30th or call the Xavier Food Fair office (882-6904) with questions.

Food Fair Book Shoppe Looking for somewhere to donate your gently used books? Why not bring them to the Xavier office to be used at Food Fair!! We welcome video games, hard cover books, paperbacks, VCR tapes, CDs, books on tape, children’s books, comic books, vinyl records, DVDs as well as puzzles and games. Proceeds from Food Fair go to tuition assistance for our students.

Oven Shoppe & Cookie Booth Hey Xavier parents, grandparents, students and friends, the Food Fair needs baked goods! The success of the Oven Shoppe and Cookie Booth is based upon the number of donated baked goods we receive. Please help us out with whatever you can do. We are looking for home-made bakery and/or canned goods (pickles, jams, etc). Our booth is in need of breads, pies, cakes, scotcharoos, puppy chow, muffins, cupcakes, brownies and cookies. We receive a generous supply of cookies from Vande Walle’s and Principal Matt Reynebeau which sell out quickly. We can use more cookies because we like to offer a nice variety as well. Please don’t use colored plastic to cover your baked items. The committee has found that presentation is very important to sales and the customers want to see your fine bakery. Please deliver your goodies to the fine arts concession stand on Saturday, May 3rd or early Sunday, May 4th. Thanks to all who have helped in the past. We hope you will continue your support. Food Fair wouldn’t be the same without you!

The musical achievements of our students could not have been realized without the encouragement of our parents and the hard work of our amazing parent volunteers! Thank you to all of our volunteers who worked throughout the day monitoring doors and rooms, selling concessions, tallying scores, and helping with set-up and take-down. The music department would especially like to thank Mrs. Paula Heimerman who worked as the lead volunteer coordinator and gracious assistant to the directors in every way. Newspaper Collection Xavier is collecting newspapers for a local farmer who is mixing it with manure and making compost to sell. Please bring your newspapers to school in paper grocery bags and drop them off in the corner of the gathering space just to the right of the main entrance as you enter. The glossy newspaper ad inserts can be included but no other type of paper is acceptable. The farmer will pick up the newspapers from Xavier every other Friday. Xavier will be paid $100 for each ton of paper we collect. Help the environment and Xavier - bring in your newspapers! Thanks. Thanks to the families who have been bringing in newspapers and starting to make a habit of it. We appreciate your support. We would love it if everyone brought in a grocery bag of newspapers each week. The farmer is need of much more newspaper so we would appreciate it if even more families dropped off their newspapers at the front entrance of Xavier High School.

Children’s Theatre

The fourth-term Children’s Theatre Production class will present “Red vs. the Wolf” written by Judy Wolfman and di-rected by Maureen Milbach. We’ve all heard the story of Little Red Riding Hood. But how often has it been told from the Wolf’s point of view? Yes, this kind, sensitive wolf gentleman is upset, for he has been maligned by society because of a story that has been repeated to generations of children. He is determined to tell the story as it really happened, of the true nature of Red Riding Hood and his own good intentions. This hilarious story will show the audience that there are two sides to every story. Students in this Children’s Theatre Production class spend their term rehearsing, building, and designing a show that is selected by teacher/director, Maureen Milbach. Our high school students become the teachers after each show as they lead the talk-back portion of the production. Most students remember their interactions with the child audiences long after their lines fade from memory. The class will perform for school groups (PreK - 4th grade) on May 19, 21, 22, and 23. There will be one public performance for the community on the evening of May 22nd at 7:00 pm. Tickets for all performances can be purchased online by visitingwww.xaviertheatre.com.

Freshman Play Beauty of Life: A Collection of Youthful 10-minute Plays and Short Scenes Wednesday, March 12, 2014 7:00 pm Director and teacher Ms. Milbach has gathered 15 talented cast and crew members from the class of 2017 to produce and perform a collection of 10- minute plays and short scenes on Wednesday, March 12th. The scenes are written from the perspective of children and teens, and in some cases, adults looking back at their youth. Ms. Milbach asked the students to name the show and, after spending time reading and practicing, they decided on “Beauty of Life.” Tickets for this energetic and thoughtful evening of theatre are $4 and are available at www.xaviertheatre.com .

I would recommend Xavier because it

surprise you with. I improved so much

ever since I stepped into Xavier.

It’s a great day to be a Hawk!

I am thankful that I attend Xavier

because I get the opportunity to express

my thoughts, faith and opinion freely. I

am also thankful for the college prep and

the guidance counselors who help me

with making the right decisions about

college and classes. Every single teacher

I have had here at Xavier has been a

great influence on me and I am thankful

that I have had the opportunities to meet

each and every one.
