Description

Introducing a family of advanced sound re-inforcement products for everyone who de-sires the sound quality of Electro-Voice'sX-Array™ touring systems. X-Array In-stall™ is the ideal choice for small-to-me-dium array configurations and fixed instal-lations of any size.

Inspired by the most demanded features ofEV's acclaimed X-Array™ touring systems, the X-Array Install™ series incorporates apotent combination of very high output,medium- to long-throw "cells," and Ring-Mode Decoupling (RMD™).

Ring-Mode Decoupling (RMD™)

RMD™ (Ring-Mode Decoupling) is thesame advanced technology built into theX-Array™ touring series. RMD™ producessubstantially improved tonal character andfidelity whether operated at low or extremelyhigh sound pressure levels. RMD™ attackstime domain "ringing modes" at theirsources. Mechanical solutions resolve me-chanical issues, and acoustical solutions ad-dress acoustical modes found in all soundreinforcement systems. The combination ofeach RMD™ technique provides improved

tonal character and fidelity at increasing drivelevels. The result is clear, even sound qual-ity with vastly improved intelligibility.

Xi-1183/64

This full-bandwidth, three-way, triamp sys-tem is designed for medium- to long-throwapplications. Its high-frequency horn/driversection is rotatable to provide proper cover-age for vertical or horizontal system instal-lations.

The low-frequency is powered by an 18-inchdriver (EVX-180B) in a slot-loaded, closed-box configuration suitable for moderate tomoderately high sound pressure levels. Whenmoderately high to very high levels are de-sired we suggest augmenting with the Xi-1191. Or, for maximum low-frequency per-formance, combine in a four-way configu-ration.

The 12-inch, application-specific mid-bassdriver features RMD™ and a 60° x 40° horn.The DH6 high-frequency driver/horn com-bination is fully "shrouded" to preserve mid-bass wave-front detail.

Applications

The Xi-1183/64 is ideally suited for high-level, high-fidelity applications. The ex-

tended capabilities of the system, particularlythe low-frequency capability allows the sys-tem to be used very successfully without theneed of a subwoofer. For application of low-frequency sound pressure levels coupled withvery accurate vocal reproduction, the Xi-1183/64 may be coupled with the Electro-VoiceXi-1191 subwoofer. The combined systemmay be run in either a conventional four-wayimplementation (sub crossover to Xi-1183/64 at 80 Hz) or three-way with the subwooferrun in parallel with the Xi-1183/64 low-fre-quency section (either with a separate am-plifier or with an amplifier possessing ap-propriate low impedance capabilities).

Power-Handling Test

Electro-Voice components and systems aremanufactured to exacting standards to en-sure reliability in continuous use in arduousreal-life conditions. Besides utilizing indus-try-standard power tests, extreme in-housepower tests which push the performancebounadries of the loudspeakers are also per-formed for an extra measure of reliability. The Xi-1183/64 systems are rated per ANSI/EIA RS426-A 1980 Loudspeaker PowerRating, Full Range Test, which uses ashaped-random-noise signal to simulate

Crossover, Equalization And Time-Delay Controller

The Xi-1183/64 speaker system and variantsare designed as an integrated package thatutilizes the Merlin ISP100, Klark TeknikDN8000 or Electro-Voice Dx34 digital cross-over system. Optimal performance of theXi-1183/64 speaker system can only be as-sured when using the above controllers.

Electrical Connection And SystemWiring

Electrical connections to the Xi-1183/64 aremade on the back of the enclosure via an 8-pin connector. There are two connectors onthe input panel to allow paralleling of otherXi-1183/64 systems. The Neutrik Speakon®

NL8MPR is used for both connections. Thepin assignments are as follows:

HF: Pin 4 In / Pins 4 OutMB: Pin 3 In / Pins 3 OutLF: Pin 1 In / Pins 2 Out

The wiring diagram of the loudspeaker sys-tem is shown in figure 7. The electrical im-pedance is shown in Figure 6.

Amplifier Recommendations

Power amplfiers with the following rat-ings are recommended for use with the Xi-1183/64 speaker systems:

LF: 600-1,200 watts continous into 8 ohms.

MB: 300-600 watts continous into 8 ohms.

HF: 125-250 watts continous into 8 ohms.

Xi-1183/64 speakers may be paralleled onlywith other Xi-1183/64 speakers if the am-plifier is capable of delivering full power atthe lower impedances. The use of amplifi-ers with lower power ratings is acceptable;however, the full-power capabilities of theXi speakers will to be realized. The use ofamplifiers with significantly higher powerratings will generate maximum dynamicrange and fidelity, but care must be utilizedfor longer duration signals as mechanical andthermal damage is possible in the system.

Flying the Xi Systems

A manual entitled the X-Array Install™ Fly-ing Manual is available from Electro-Voice,and is included with each flying Xi loud-speaker system. A brief introductory over-view is included here. The X-Array-Install™

Flying Manual should be consulted for com-plete structural specifications and detailed in-formation on safely suspending and using theXi systems.

The Xi systems incorporate a unique two-point flying system that permits a wide rangeof vertical angle adjustment, and offers maxi-mum flexibility in array design for both tour-ing sound and permanent installations. Thequick-release, aircraft-rated heavy-duty L-track-type hardware design allows arrays ofloudspeakers to be assembled (and disas-sembled) very quickly, and offers such flex-ibility in the vertical angling of cabinets thatpull-up points are usually unnecessary. Fur-thermore, all of the flying Xi loudspeakermodels include the same rigging hardware, allowing different models to be mixed as nec-essary throughout an array.

The working-load limit (for an 8:1 safety fac-tor) for each rigging point on the Xi loud-speaker enclosure is 227 kg (500 lb) for a 0°pull angle and 170 kg (375 lb) for a 90° pullangle when used with the New HavenNH32101-2 double-stud fitting, and 113 kg

(250 lb) at any angle when used with the NewHaven NH8192-2S or Ancra 42546-10single-stud fittings with locking pins. Theworking-load limit (for an 8:1 safety factor)for the overall enclosure is 453 kg (1,000 lb).(Consult the X-Array Install™ FlyingManual for specific structural ratings andlimitations.) The enclosures may be orientedwith the rigging track on the sides of the en-closure, or on the top and bottom, and maybe daisy-chained together as long as thesafety factor is 8:1 or greater, and local regu-lations are met. For fire safety and additionalstructural strength in both flying orientations,top-to-bottom and side-to-side metal strapslink the rigging track inside the enclosure.

CAUTION: The Xi loudspeaker systemshould be suspended overhead only in ac-cordance with the procedures and limita-tions specified in the X-Array Install Fly-ing Manual and manual updates notices.

Field Replacment

Normal service for the Xi requires only a #2Phillips screwdriver and a 3/16-inch hexkeywrench. The drivers may be accessed as fol-lows:

HF: First remove the grille, then remove thescrews securing the front flange of the high-frequency horn. Peel the hook and loopfastner strips from the four corners of thefoam shroud and remove the four sides ofthe shroud. Lift the horn and driver out ofthe wood assembly. In the event of failure, the diaphragm assembly can be replaced withthe driver attached to the horn.

MB: Remove the screws securing the hatchon the back of the enclosure and lift the hatchout. Remove the screws securing the 12-inchwoofer and lift the driver out of the enclo-sure. In the event of failure, the entire woofermust be replaced.

LF: First remove the grille, then remove thescrews securing the hatch on the front of theenclosure. Remove the screws securing the18-inch woofer and lift the driver out of theenclosure. In the event of failure, the entirewoofer must be replaced.

Figure 4—Directivity

The directivity index, Di, and directivity fac-

tor, Rθ , of the system were measured with afull spherical measurement system as de-scribed for the Polar Response.

Figure 5—Distortion

Distortion for the system was measured onaxis in the farfield in an anechoic environ-ment with an input signal that would resultin a sound-pressure level of 115 dB at onemeter. The DN8000 digital electronic unitwas used to provide the necessary 3-waycrossover filters, equalization and time de-lay. A frequency spectrum typical of close-miked rock music was employed. The sound-pressure level was normalized for an equiva-lent one-meter distance. Plots of second andthird harmonic distortion are shown refer-enced to the fundamental.

Figure 3—Beamwidth

The beamwidth of the system, (i.e., the in-cluded horizontal and vertical coverageangles at the -6-dB points) was measuredwith a full spherical measurement system asdescribed in Polar Response.
