Faculty Interview

Dr. Subhajyoti Ray (M-Stat, (ISI); Fellow, Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad) has been appointed as the Dean (Academics) of XIMB, with effect from May 2, 2016.

Excerpts from the interview:

Firstly, sincere congratulation Sir, for your new appointment.

Thank you very much for your wishes!!

1.Sir, you have been the Dean of XIMB earlier also. What are the major changes from then to now?

A) It has become a lot more complex in terms of scale but in terms of scope complexity has reduced. For example, earlier as the Dean of XIMB I had to look at HRM and RM too apart from BM. In that sense it was more complex. There were some inter linkages, faculty concerns between programmes. That is not there now. On the other hand, we are now looking at 360 students across two campuses. So the scale is around twice of what it was earlier. That brings with it its own challenges.

2. In this regard, what do you think are the immediate challenges that XIMB is facing right now? What should be done to overcome them?

A) We have grown rapidly in the past 2-2.5 years. When you grow at such a pace it pulls all your resources and they become stressed. So what we have to do now is to consolidate. Consolidation means to reclaim whatever was your standing among the peers. That is the Challenge #1. Challenge #2 is to ensure that the academic processes, the relationship we have with the corporate and other stakeholders are at the same level or they get improved, as it is always a quantity -quality trade off when there is a spurt of growth. The other way to think about this is that you cannot stay at the same place. You either go down or you go up. Growth is good. We have to grow. We cannot stay at the same place. Internally we have understood that these are the issues and on various dimensions we have made faculty lead teams on branding, ranking, research and on accreditation; all these are new committees. Their only agenda is to improve on those fields so that if we have lost some ground we make it up and move ahead fast.

3.You are also a teacher. How do you juggle your academic responsibilities with those of being a Dean and which do you enjoy more?

A) I enjoy teaching more, there is no doubt about that. It is always nice to mix with young people and that helps you stay young . To me that is a personal gain. Without teaching you cannot be a Dean. You need to understand the students, who the new

Page 13: XIMB, XaHR, XSRM, XCOMM, XSoS, XSC · MBA-UMG is a new 2-year, full-time residential program to prepare professionals with the knowledge and skills to develop and run sustainable

students are, what they are thinking, what is going on in their minds. That helps you as that is a feedback from the system. You automatically get to know about several things just because you are a teacher and that helps you in your work as a Dean, both complimentary to an extent. However we are doing more teaching and our load is increasing. So it is becoming more challenging. It is not as comfortable as it was 4 years ago, but still it's fine.

4. Currently we are seeing that the MBA degree is losing its overall sheen. What do you think is the main reason for this and what do you think XIMB can do to prevent this?

A) One of the reasons is that there is over supply. The exclusivity is decreasing. If you have only 5 IIMs in a country where 40% of the population is young and aspiring to get good corporate jobs then it is exclusive. But nonetheless if you look at the s ize of our country and the population, there is enough scope to have 100 high quality super league MBA institutions. The challenge is not in acquiring good students, it is in acquiring good faculty. We are fortunate in that aspect. We have a good faculty pool with mixed and healthy experience. So that is a challenge for the whole sector. But at the same time when the sector grows, the good ones also grow and benefit. We are one of the good ones and in the long term we will only benefit from this growth. People w ill begin to differentiate. The sector consolidates and the market facilitates this consolidation. Once that happens we will stand out. Right now we are in a transition phase after which the good ones will remain. The challenge is a level playing field. Some colleges may have a lot more financial muscle than others. Culture wise we are ahead of most institutions and that is why we are very happy to work here.

5.What impact do you think technology is going to have on business school education?

A) That's a very hazardous thing to guess. The way technology is moving it can distort every single model we conceive. But what a B-school provides that technology will not be able to provide is the peer environment, the ecosystem. You can learn the subject but you will not be able to brainstorm, discuss and debate with friends. A B-school is not just about learning subjects. You grow as an individual. You take responsibility, you work with a diverse group of people, you accept or reject ideas, you face rejection sometimes, and all of this comes into play. Over an 18 month period you transform from what you were when you entered and that is the biggest contribution of a B-School which technology might eventually be able to do by creating a virtual environment but there is a long way to go there, particularly in India where language is going to be a barrier. Most of the popular MOOCs are by foreign faculty speaking an English which only the top 2-3% will be able to understand. What about the rest? Another problem is that dropout rates are very high in technology. A lot of people may give up mid way. You need something to hold you. But yes, there will be changes. The curriculum might become a mix. You might have components delivered by technology as well as classroom time used for discussion and debates which will be more intel lectual like the flip classroom model.

6.What do you think the business school curriculum will look like in the next 5 years?

A) There will be a need have a solid understanding of fundamental topics no matter how many years ahead we go. That will always be there. There will be more focus on the individual and personalities, like communication and soft skills aspect. People should be able to work in diverse, globalised teams and MBA curriculum will focus more on those aspects, including building character in terms of resilience and assertiveness. There will also be innovations in the corporate sector which will be brought into the classrooms. The methodology will still be case driven. There will be a good mix of technology and such tools, not just lecturing. On the tools front there will be innovations.

14 | P a g e XUB Magis July 2016

7.What are your future plans for XIMB right now?

A) As I said we have four new committees. It is important to look at branding very carefully. We are trying to do a study to understand where we stand, where we want to go and what should be the action plan. We have a strategic advisory board which are like our eyes and ears and they give us insights from the corporate world. They give us information and advice on what we should do. The immediate focus would be on the accreditation front. We want to get into AACSB as soon as possible. So the 3 major things we will focus on are the role of the strategic advisor, branding and accreditations.
