Projects summary

My design of point line and plane is using sticks and paper, that built on the ground space, and becomes a place to lie down, sit, stand and walk. My design of mass connects both underground and ground spaces, which focus on shadow. My design of frame and infill combines ground and above ground spaces, which the structure and material are my focus.

Point + Line + Plane

- Points on the ground functioned as seats and connection

- Lines to form curved planes- The angle of the lines can become

places for people sit and lie down- Triangle planes also functioned as seats

for people.

IDEAS:

- Some buildings give me a feeling ofboth gentle and strong. Because somelines formed a zig shape that give us avision impact, but the edges of thebuilding are curved, that make thebuilding has a soft feeling to us . So linescan produce distinct feelings.- The structure of the construction ismade up by individual planes, andplanes become walls of the personinside. But when look down thisconstruction, only edges of the planescan be seen, so it can seen as lines inthis direction. So I find that looking fromdifferent view point, differentcompositions can been formed.- The edges of the wooden planes arecurved so that formed curved lines.Continuous curved lines show us aflowing feel, like the movement of liquid.

Mass

Shadow

-Transparency material to let the light go through- Hollow parts on the ground, let different quantity of sunlight go through, and produce different shadows

IDEAS:

- The void exposes the underside ofthe building, creating theappearance of a twisted structure, and create a large shelteredentrance for people below.- There are some irregular shapesof holes on the huge concrete roof, that through the days, the sunlightwill change at different time. So it isa good example combined massand light.Because the base is made by glass, the transparent color highlights themass above.

Frame + Infill

- Triangular frame - Using transparency material

as infill

IDEAS:

- Using transparency materialand partially fill the frame

Conceptacle

The idea of my conceptacle model is repeat and fold. First ofall, I use the triangular frame from my frame and infill tobecome the base, and use many triangles to divided onespace into many individual spaces. Each of the triangle canbe seen as private space and hide secret. I also make twohollow parts on the plane to show the underground space. Itonly can be seen when you face the certain direction of thetriangles. The drawings can clearly show the undergroundspaces and the shadow produced.

Herring IslandSite analysis

HistoryHerring Island is an artificial island located inMelbourne’s Yarra River at South Yarra.

Herring Island was formed in 1928 by cuttinga new path for the Yarra River through an oldbasalt quarry, as part of a plan to controlflooding of the river. It is the only island in the Yarra River.

Herring Island contains indigenous vegetation, and provides important habitat for nativefauna. Also there are many sculpture in thepark.

Chosen site

The map shows the chosen site. It is near one of the entrances, andnear the path, also the density of the vegetation here is not very flourish. The noise influences this site is main produced by the highway. Mostimportantly, the topography of the chosen site is rugged, so providesmore opportunities.

Final design

ExperiencesWhen moving in the direction of the bluearrow, firstly, you are standing on thehighest point of this site. Then you areleading by the steps and go to the lowerplace. Then you can either go up to theover ground space with technical roomand store on it, or you can go to theunderground space which design forchildren and play with shadow. Finally youcan go back the sheltered places on thehighest point. This journey is leading bythe two wooden stairs, and you can feelthe topography of this site.

Reflection

During this semester, the most important thing I have learnt is how to designa site which link to three spaces – underground space, ground and overground space. The most interesting part may be mass, because I never thinkabout how underground design should be like before, and also otherclassmates’ work inspire me a lot. Meanwhile, I realized that site analysis isalso an important part of the design. I hope I can do better in the future.
