Overview

Xirrus Mobilize is an automated, cloud-based provisioning service for Xirrus networks. It greatly simplifies and expedites the deployment and turn up of new equipment via a zero-touch process that is as easy as plugging in the new Xirrus Array or AP to the IP network at the headquarters or in the remote branch office.

1. Factory Pre-Configuration

When a customer places an order for Xirrus Arrays/APs, the customer information is passed on from sales systems to supply chain systems where the appropriate license keys are generated and associated with the devices. The Arrays/APs license information along with the serial number for each device is loaded into the Mobilize cloud service and associated with the customer account based on the order that was placed.

2. Email notification

An email notification is sent to the email address on record notifying that the WLAN device is ready to be configured through Mobilize. The email also provides a link to a training video. If you are already a Mobilize user, you will get an email indicating that new Arrays and APs have been added to your existing account.

Dear User,

3. Logging into Mobilize

Log into Mobilize at http://login.xirrus.com and change the pre-assigned password if you are a first time user.

4. Creating profiles

The first step of using Mobilize is to create a profile, which is a network template that can be applied to a number of devices without having to configure each one separately. A profile could be created for a building, a campus or a floor in a building or any logical group. An example of a profile is a common network setup for all high schools in a school district. There are 5 configuration sections that define a profile. The sections are:

• General – configure contact information and minimum software levels

• SSID – Add a new SSID and set the name, VLAN information, encryption type etc.

• Network – configure DHCP and DNS information

• Policies – configure policies based on user, device, SSID and global parameters

• Admin – create role-based administrator accounts for your company

In the screen shot above notice the * on the SSID configuration section indicating a change has been made but not yet saved. You can click on SAVE ALL to save the profile.

5. Creating Policies

Policies can be created based on device types, user type, SSIDs or global policies. Click on the type of policy you want to create and give it a name.

The next step is to create firewall rules or application control rules and associate them with the policy. Firewall rules are based on Layer 2 or Layer 3 source and destination pairs. Application control rules are based on Layer 7 application headers.

You can also click on “Show Advanced” in most of the steps to define additional fields. In most cases the basic configuration will be sufficient.

6. Associate Arrays/APs to Profiles

At the top right corner, you will see two tabs – “Configuration” and “Arrays.” The Configuration tab is where profiles are created. The Arrays tab is where all the serial numbers of the devices ordered will be found.

Arrays and APs from the list have to be associated with the profile by clicking on “Add Arrays.”

Once an Array or AP is added to a given profile it shows up in a list of all other Arrays associated with that profile. Notice that that Status shows as Not Activated.

7. On-Premises Installation

Once the Arrays/APs arrive at the destination, connect the devices to the network with Internet connectivity. Out-of-the-box, the Arrays/APs are set to automatically locate the Mobilize cloud service over https protocol (port 443). The service validates entitlement then automatically deploys the unit’s license. Mobilize will check the software version and update if required based on the minimum version defined in the general configuration section of the profile that includes that device. The Mobilize service then pushes the entire configuration to the device and brings the device online. The device status in the Mobilize console will change to:

• Activated – indicating the device has successfully been configured

• Error – the device failed to configure

• Expired – the 30 day period has expired

Attention: Mobilize cloud service is available for 30 days from the first time an Array/AP connects with the cloud based Mobilize service. The 30-day timer is set for each individual device separately.

System Requirements

Mobilize is supported on Arrays and APs with Array OS version 6.5 or later.
