has made three new directorial appointments

to strengthen its management team.

Arthur Kiong has been named managing

director of hotel operations in Asia Pacific,

while Bernold Schroeder is the new manag-

ing director for the Americas and EMEA. Paul

Rene Lee has taken up the post of regional

director of hotel operations in China.

Resort and spa operator

Banyan Tree is to nearly dou-

ble the number of properties

in its portfolio by 2013.

The group currently owns

and manages 30 resorts,

hotels, spas and galler-

ies around the world and

has announced a target of

having 56 sites in operation by

the end of 2013.

Plans include having a total

of 22 sites in Asia Pacific,

18 in China and another

16 across the Middle East,

Europe and the Americas.

The first new property to launch, in early

2011, will be the Eastern Mangroves resort in

Abu Dhabi, UAE. The hotel will feature 224

bedrooms and an Angsana-branded Spa.

Other openings planned for 2011 are the

Banyan Tree Riverside, Shanghai; Banyan

Tree Macau; Angsana Hangzhou; and Angsana

Balaclava in Mauritius.

The group has announced plans to have 56 locations by the end of 2013

Barbara Sovinc, a spokesperson for the com-

pany, said that the government – which owns

the park and land of the proposed spa – is

expected to give the go-ahead in early 2011.

“We are currently looking for co-financiers

for the project,” she added.

Slovenian salt production company Soline

Pridelava has been granted the rights to pro-

tect and develop the Seovlje Salina Nature

Park in the Piran Municipality of the coun-

try’s Littoral region.

The company already produces salt bath-

ing and beauty products under the Lepa Vida

brand and has announced that it will develop

a spa within the nature park.

Exact details for the spa, including the size

of the resort, are to be confirmed as the project

is at an early stage, but plans include outdoor

thermal baths and eco-friendly spa pavilions

housing treatment rooms.

A new in-house concept

called Iridium Spa is to be

introduced within Starwood

Hotels’ St Regis brand.

Speaking exclusively to Spa Business, Starwood’s director

of global spa brands and pro-

gramming, Mia Kyricos, said:

“Iridium Spa is a concept born

from the DNA of our brand,

originating with the famed

Iridium Room [a prestigious

ballroom] at The St Regis New

York in 1938.”

Iridium Spa will fit with guests who are the

most discerning of Starwood customers being

“generally the wealthiest and the most well-trav-

elled” (see Spa Business Issue 3/2010 p24).

The first Iridium Spa will debut at The St

Regis Lhasa Resort in Tibet at the end of 2010.

Facilities will include a signature relaxation

area – the Iridium Room – as well as a stun-

Hotel Levitunturi in Kittilä,

The two-storey extension

will include accommodation

as well as a large resort spa.

Facilities will include 12

treatment rooms, a total of 17

indoor and outdoor pools –

including large spa pools and

hot and cold plunge pools –

and a sauna world boasting

different types of sauna.

There will also be a large health and fitness

club, a Spa Bowling-branded ten pin bowling

centre as well as a range of restaurants – includ-

ing a Spa Bistro serving healthy foods.

Further St Regis properties in the pipeline

for 2011 include one European opening as well

as two in China, launching in the fourth quar-

ter. Asia is also a key market for the rollout,

followed by EAME.

With the Iridium Spa launch, owners will be

able to choose from two spa concepts devel-

oped exclusively for St Regis; the other is Bliss

World Holdings’ Remède Spa.

The hotel is situated within the cham-

pionship-standard Levi ski resort – the

northernmost site on current skiing World Cup

circuit. Details: www.hotellilevitunturi.fi

hen the going gets tough, the

tough get going. It’s a well

used phrase and one, I sus-

pect, that has been repeated

by management teams around the globe over

the last couple of years.

The economic climate for businesses in

most countries has been extremely challeng-

ing. Taking a straw poll of people I come in to

contact with on a daily basis be they business

partners, clients or peers in the industry, many

have spent increasing time ensuring they have

their financial house in order (strong cash

flow, stringent pursuit of debtors, etc) and

that they are looking after their talent.

The really smart ones are also keeping

a very keen eye on their competition and

equally looking to identify new areas in which

to expand. In terms of competition to spas,

there is obviously the ‘close in’ type – other

spas in the neighbourhood, or indeed further

afield (as people are willing to travel for the

experience); but competition should also be

viewed in the context of fighting for a con-

sumer’s ‘share of purse/wallet’ and indeed

fighting for ‘share of diary’, with time becom-

ing an increasingly rare commodity. It’s about

understanding the core emotional drivers that

motivate people to experience spas and con-

sidering who or what else might be able to

deliver against these needs.

If a core drive is relaxation or escape, then a

consumer might choose to spend their money

on a short city break. The motivation might

be deeper rooted – to rebalance and overcome

a bereavement. In which case, ‘competition’

may actually come from psychotherapists.

There are two schools of thought with

regard to competition. One is effectively to

ignore it and focus effort on delivering what

a business is good at. This is admirable, but

borders on the arrogant and can have seri-

ous downsides. The other, which I believe to

be more appropriate in this day and age, is

to approach the issue strategically and with

a more forensic analysis.

Strategically speaking, there are many

techniques and approaches that can be

A group of 14 students from the Elly Lukas

Beauty Therapy College in Melbourne,

Australia attended the recent ISPA

Conference and Expo in Washington DC,

US to meet top operators.

The fourteen students, led by Alex Zotos,

visited Germany, France and the UK before

arriving at the conference. In all, the trip

took three weeks.

The students were given a 0 per cent loan

by the Australian government to cover the

costs associated with the trip.

The regional government of Himachal

Pradesh in India is planning to set up an

ayurveda university in the state.

The plans are part of the government’s

plans to invest Rs480m (£6.6m, US$10.6m,

€7.8m) in developing the region’s infrastruc-

ture around ayurvedic medicine facilities

and to establish the state as a leading region

for spa and medical tourism.

There are currently 300 ayurvedic health

centres in the northern Indian state.

US-based day spa operator Red Door, part

of the Elizabeth Arden group of compa-

nies, is preparing to enter the spa market in

India, with Mumbai as the first city being

targeted. The company is aiming to open

in all major cities in India.

According to Red Door chief creative

officer, Cornelia Zicu, the first spa will

open early in 2011.

It will be the company’s first facility in

Asia and packages will be “fine-tuned to

suit the Indian climate.”

(a lot easier in this Google-enabled world)

through to more intense ‘wargaming’. The lat-

ter is becoming much more prevalent. Not

only can it be very insightful to put oneself in

the place of the competition and assess what

action they may take, it can also be fun.

Like many things, effective ‘wargaming’

requires through planning and market anal-

ysis, an independent facilitator and benefits

from participation across many levels of the

business. Looking at one’s business from the

perspective of a competitor can be both lib-

erating and enlightening and more often than

not can identify ‘quick wins’.

I believe it is essential for spas to consider

their competition in the broadest sense.

As the US steel magnate Andrew Carnegie

once said: “And while the law of competition

may be sometimes hard for the individual,

it is best for the race, because it ensures the

survival of the fittest in every department.”

Global spa and wellness

resource SpaFinder has

published its eighth annual

forecast, which has identified

10 trends expected to influ-

ence the industry in 2011.

Data from more than

9,000 spas and salons across

the world; analysis from a

wide range of experts; and

interviews with sector ana-

lysts have helped shape the

new report. Among the top

trends forecast for 2011 is the growth of the

Baby Boomer demographic and the need for

spas to cater for older clients seeking pain relief

and increased mobility.

The ‘explosive’ growth in the Asian hotel/spa

market; salt rooms and salt caves; the science

of spa treatments; and ‘hyper-local’ spas also

feature as part of SpaFinder’s list.

Meanwhile, other trends to watch out for

include the branding of spa experiences; spa

deals and ‘express’ treatments.

SpaFinder president Susie Ellis said: “I

have never seen the aggregate level of cre-

ativity in the field of spa and wellness, just

as the economy begins its upswing.” Details:
