XTERRA RACING

While only qualified athletes can race for the championshipon Sunday, one-and-all are eligible to compete in theXTERRA Nevada open competition on Saturday. The race is comprised of a 750-meter swim, 32-kilometer

mountain bike, and 5k trail run. While the swim and run seg-ments are half-the-distance of the championship course, themountain bike leg is identical to that of the main event.

Participants can even create a two or three person relay -where one person does the swim, another the bike, and theother the run - and enter the XTERRA Nevada GU relayteam challenge. This is a great way to have fun with familyand friends.

XTERRA COLLEGIATE NATIONALSThe XTERRA Nevada race on Saturday also doubles asthe XTERRA Collegiate Nationals. No strict rules here.Any collegian with a current photo ID can race for theirschool as an individual (and get discounted entry fee) andthree from the same school make a team.

Nevada's spectacular natural environment and themajestic Sierra Nevada mountain range provide a world-class setting and challenge for the biggest race of theseason.

The national championship starts at the beach fronting theHyatt Regency Lake Tahoe where competitors swim twolaps of a 750-meter course in the spring-fed, crystal clearwaters located 6,200 feet above sea level. The swim is followed by a quarter-mile shuffle to the

grassy swim-to-bike transition area at Village Green.

The second element is a 32-kilometer, single loopmountain bike course. Following a short, paved sectionpast prime, lakefront real estate on Incline Village'sLakeshore Blvd., competitors reach the trails at LakeTahoe Nevada State Park, where the race really begins.

The first off-road section greeting riders is a 1,600-footclimb up Tunnel Creek Road to Tahoe's famed Flume Trail. The "Flume" is known for its exposed crossing of sheerrock faces and incredible sweeping vistas.

Those focusing too much on the view may end upcasualties of this 4.5-mile section of single track.

"It's my favorite ride in the whole world!" exclaimsXTERRA Pro Jenny Tobin.

At the aspen-clad Marlette Lake, a second leg-burningclimb on Hobart Road takes racers to the Tahoe Rim Trail.Halfway into the 6.6-mile section is the Marlette LakeOverlook at 8,700 feet above sea level (the highest pointon the XTERRA course). From the top, a 2,500-footdescent to the second transition area resembles "Toad'sWild Ride" as it passes through a series of switchbacksand the waterless Twin Lakes.

The last leg of the race is a 10-kilometer forest trail runconsisting of two 5-kilometer laps through some of nature'smost arduous obstacles. While the run course remainsrelatively flat, there are numerous short, steep climbs andquick descents. Balancing along narrow log crossings, ducking under downed trees and skipping over bouldersare just a few of the final tests of skill and endurance. The run course also passes by the crowd at the compoundat the end of the first lap, and the crowd gets into it bycheering on the athletes.

The XTERRA Nevada course on Saturday is identical tothat of the main event, except the swim and run segmentsare half-the-distance.

By the managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour, “Kahuna Dave” Nicholas...

Here we go into the final race for the US, and we go into it with what is one of the finest pro fields ever. Some of the bestforeign pros are here to go up against our USA series athletes. Here’s a sample:

Sam Gardner (England) XTERRA Japan Champion Andrew Noble (Australia) XTERRA Saipan ChampionCarina Wasle (Austria) XTERRA Czech Champion Renata Bucher (Swiss) Japan, Saipan, France ChampChris Legh (Australia) XTERRA Australia Champ Dan Hugo (South Africa) XTERRA South Africa Champ

Add to that Fabiola Corona, 2008 Olympian from Mexico along with 2004 Olympic bronzemedal winner Susan Williams and we have quite a field to watch.

The way the points are added requires the pros to count whatever points they earn atTahoe as part of their total. So no points, means you get a big, fat zero that you mustcount. So while Conrad Stoltz has 3 wins, Dan Hugo the 2009 South African champ with3 second places is only 30 points behind. So a win by Hugo and a 5th or worse byConrad and the Championship goes to the young gun.

Same for the women. Melanie McQuaid goes to Tahoe with a perfect 300, but ShonnyVanlandingham is just 28 behind so their situation is exactly like the men. A win byShonny and a 5th or worse by Mel and Shonny is the champ.A big bobble by the leading two men or two women and Jen Smith and Josiah Middaugh

are right there and ready to take the big prize of $14,000 to the points winner. And with the arrival of the foreign pros intothe mix there are a lot of “what ifs”. Seth Wealing has been living not far from Tahoe for most of the year and he won therein 2006. We saw Josiah win Richmond and he’s a horse for this course. Brian Smith has not had any luck in Tahoe butthe 3rd year could be the charm.

Mike Vine has been second at Tahoe for two straight years and he is peaking for this race. Like Vine, Jen Smith was beensecond at Tahoe for the past two years and is overdue for that Big Win.

The Age Group championship scheme is less complicated. This is a poker “All In” race.Win it and you are the champ. We have some pretty heavy age group past championsready to play King of the Mountain and stay on top of the heap.

Tom Lyons is back looking for his record breaking 7th National Championship, but hewas beaten earlier this year by Casey Fannin and those guys will be close. Matt Boobarhas won the last two amateur titles but can Ross McMahan use local knowledge to beathim. Damien Gonzalez is now a pro so 30-34 is wide open. Emma Garrard was fastestamateur woman last year and she is now a pro as well so that puts 25-29 out there forSusie Snyder, Brandyn Roark Gray or Erin Collins. This particular group of women areall very fast and well worth watching.

Other 2007 National Champs returning are Lisa Lieb, Caroline Colonna, Bev Enslow,Cindi Toepel and Kathy Frank for the women and Scott Zavack, Tommy Monica and Hans

Dieben for the men. Will Willie Stewart be back to keep his Challenged Athlete crown or is it Mike Hicks turn? Lots ofquestions going into this most important race. Anybody who thinks they can predict the age group winners this year has alot more confidence than this old guy. Times, they are a changing, new and fast folks are coming around. Will it snow againthis year or will it be sunny and mild? Will Tunnel Creek be sticky or slick?

Hey, that’s why we have the race. At 9:00am on Sunday the 5th everybody will say “ALL IN”.

XTERRA AMERICA TOURThe XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete forwithin their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited tocompete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Nevada onOctober 5. This year there are 60 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territories of Guam and Saipan. It marks the 12th straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works:1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York.MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C.SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin IslandsNORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky.SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas.MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming.NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska.SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2008. Athletes compete in the followingage categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65-69 (m), 70+ (m),the Physically Challenged Division (15-39 and 40+) in five categores = severe leg impairment, les autres, arm impair-ment, moderate leg impairment, and visual impairment/legally blind, and new for 2008 the Collegiate Division (see p 37).

3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 60 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races &XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event inhis/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes.

4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one XTERRAChampionship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as theXTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems:

XTERRA Championship Series:

XTERRA Points Series:

5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the XTERRA USA Championshipin Nevada (qualifying spots based on chart below). The competitor with the most points in their age group in eachXTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey.

THE NEW XTERRA COLLEGIATE DIVISIONHERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

Any collegian with a current photo ID can race for theirschool as an individual. You do need to be a member of aschool club or team.

There are no age groups in the collegiate division, justmale and female categories.

Collegiate racers do not collect points in the XTERRAAmerica Tour Series and are not eligible for age groupawards - they only race against other collegiate entries.

Whenever there are three athletes from two or moreschools entered in the same race they’ll go against eachother for school pride in the college team division. Theremust be at least two schools with teams for a team award tobe presented.

A “team” must consist of at least 3 male or femalemembers. There are no mixed teams. A team can havemore entrants, but less than three will not constitute a team.

Points for team awards (male and female) will count thefinishing positions of the smallest number entered by aqualifying team. Example: College A has 5 men; College Bhas 7 men; College C has 9 men. Only the fastest 5finishers will count towards the team awards.

Points for team awards will be calculated based on the finishing positions of the team members. The lowest total is thewinner. Example: Each team counts 3 athletes. Team A finishes 1, 8 and 15 overall for a total number 24. Team Bfinishes 5, 6 and 10 for a total number 21. Team C finishes 2, 9 and 20 for a total number of 31. Team B wins. In nocase will more than 7 athletes count towards the team awards regardless of the total number of entries by any oneteam. Should a club enter more than 7 men or women, the coach must nominate the 7 individuals he wants scored forteam awards. Other members are still eligible for individual awards, but their finishing position will not be countedtowards the team totals. Positions counted are overall positions in gender, not just collegiate entrants. This wouldinclude professional entries.

Collegiate Cup:

A Collegiate Cup award will be given when two or more schools have at least 3 men and 3 women per school represent-ed. Example: College A has 5 men, 2 women; College B has 7 men, 3 women. There can be no Collegiate Cup awardas there are not 2 teams that meet the overall requirements. Should two or more schools have the necessary entriesscoring will be similar to the team scoring method with all finishing positions of qualified team members added.

Also:

Collegiate entrants race for separate awards. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female individualcollegiate division finishers, the winning men’s and women’s teams, and the winner of the Collegiate Cup competition (ifapplicable). Pre-Registration is required for the XTERRA Collegiate Cup to be presented. Athletes competing in theCollegiate Division do not prevent XTERRA Age Group athletes from receiving XTERRA America Tour points.

At the XTERRA Regional Champ races collegians can enter the Sport distance but as an age group athlete. There isno college division in the half-distance XTERRA Sport race.

Oct. 4 - XTERRA Collegiate Nationals - All college students are welcome to race for the inaugural XTERRACollegiate National Championship on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada!

At the heart of XTERRA is the fundamental idea of puttingon great races in epic places with friendly faces. Prettysimple, really, but it’s a formula that has proven successfulover the years and that same philosophy is being used togrow the XTERRA Trail Run Series. Now in its fourth year as a stand-alone set of races outside

of the off-road triathlon circuit, the XTERRA Trail Run Seriesboasts 50 runs in 16 states and 8 countries, giving runnersthe opportunity to race their way around the worldliterally.

New in 2008 is the focus on the off-road half-marathondistance, what XTERRA calls an “Xduro”. When askedabout the paradigm shift (XTERRA Trail Runs used to bemostly 5k and 10k runs) Tom Kiely, CEO of XTERRA,explained that “after 12 years of producing trail runs along-side our XTERRA off-road triathlons we’ve learned that ouraudience wanted a bigger challenge than a 10k. What themarket told us was to create a series of half-marathons thathave a physical challenge parallel to that of a roadmarathon, but with Mother Nature along for the ride.”

Two new big-time races, in truly stunning adventuredestinations, have been added to this year’s line up with theXTERRA Trail Running National Championship in Bend,Oregon on September 27 and the first-ever XTERRATrail Running World Championship on the HawaiianIsland of Oahu on December 7.

Not long ago Bend was named “America’s Best TrailRunning Town” by Outside Magazine, and with its wide vari-ety of terrain, mild fall climate, endless miles of pristine trailsand a local community full of enthusiasm and support for therace, runners can expect a one-of-a-kind experience atNationals.

“The U.S. Trail Run Series is the fastest-growing segmentof XTERRA and the National Championship race is turninginto a really big deal,” said Kiely. “We think Bend is anamazing place to visit and explore, and an ideal venue forthe last race in the series.”

There are 10 regional series in the U.S. - Oregon, Utah,Georgia, New York, New England, Chicago, Tennessee,Philadelphia, Southern California and the Chesapeake Area– and each hosts between 3 and 7 races through the courseof the year. The winner of each age group in each seriesearns free entry into the XTERRA Trail Running NationalChampionship race.

In Bend the championship event is an Xduro (21k/13.1mile), but the day-long running celebration will also featureraces of 10k and 5k distances, a festival/expo center forparticipants and spectators, and live entertainment so theentire community can get involved. While the race field will

include competitors who have qualified for Nationals atother events, participation is still open to the general public.

Following Nationals, say Aloha! Held the weekend priorto the Honolulu Marathon, the XTERRA Trail Running WorldChampionship will kick off the “greatest week of running onEarth” for athletes from around the globe. For competitiverunners, $10,000 in prize money will be awarded to the topmale and female finishers and racers from Xduro events inBrazil, New Zealand, Italy, France, Austria, and Japan areexpected to come join in the adventure. The site at Kualoa Ranch on the northeastern side of Oahu

is nothing short of magical. Arguably the most stunninglandscape in Hawaii, the 4,000 acre working cattle ranchhas been the setting for major motion productions such asJurassic Park, Godzilla and LOST. From the steep mountaincliffs to the sparkling sea, the terrain varies from dense rain-forest to broad open valleys and from beautiful white sandbeaches to awesome verdant cliff faces.

This inaugural gathering of international trail runners ishighlighted by the 21k Xduro but is accompanied by numer-ous events ranging from shorter distance trail runs and kids’races to a walk-a-thon for charity and family entertainment.

“XTERRA is thrilled with the growth of its Trail RunningSeries” said Janet Clark, President of TEAMUnlimited/XTERRA. “XTERRA Trail Runs give runners anopportunity to explore some wildly natural environmentsand challenge Mother Nature’s diverse and unique offeringsfrom roots to rocks, to stream crossings and unexpectedscenic vistas.”

Lightweight XTERRA Shoes Designed to Help AthletesStalk Their On-Course Prey

TJ Gray and Ashley Brown — designers of XTERRA’s newline of footwear and apparel — stood at the finish line of theXTERRA World Championship in Maui last October. Whilemany of the competitors lay in bed the night before countingsheep in anticipation of the race, that afternoon Gray andBrown were counting shoes.

Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe. As athletes poureddown from the lower slopes of Mount Haleakala from theirnearly seven-mile trail run over roots, rocks and ravines,Gray and Brown couldn’t believe their eyes.

“Maybe one in 100 was a trail runner,” said Brown, whoalong with partner Gray have also developed shoes forNike, adidas and Salomon. “They were all sacrificing sta-bility for less weight.”

They returned to the drawing board, determined to makeXTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail runningshoe on the market. With four months until the launch of theshoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City, designs were tweaked, materials tested — including aunique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefootand a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel. But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come.

After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, amolding model never before seen in the category wascreated. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole, replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of twolayers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfortand stability while taking away weight.

The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightesttrail runner ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces formen, 9.5 for women.

With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Grayand Brown began to research every movement taken on atrail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degreedirectional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water, the balanced gripped-toe run across a log. As they were going for a timed run in the woods near their

studios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as thelead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s newfootwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.

“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digginginto loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on everystep, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathleteat Syracuse.

“The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” hecontinued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’sunique outsole lug concept.”

The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray andBrown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design formsindependent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flexzones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted thelugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center, helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creatinga larger surface area.

“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’sco-existence with all things found in the environment, saidBrown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it beanimal, plant or any of nature’s elements. Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new line

is that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’reto be connected with.”

XTERRA’s fall 2008 footwear launch includes five styles:trail runner, trail trainer (each $115), ultra trainer ($95), per-formance sandal ($75) and performance slide ($55). Theyhit retail in July and will be available at outdoor specialty, running, tri and independent sporting goods stores.

The line includes a wide selection of race- and training-specific apparel and accessories as well, amongthem jackets, singlets, speedsuits and shorts.

XTERRA ECO TEAM

The Eco Team is an athlete initiated program to engage the XTERRAcommunity in environmental initiatives to help protect and preserve the areaswe race in, and give back to the communities that host us.

The program started in 2007 by organizing ecological restoration workparties at our race venues and initiating a gear recycling program for donationto local bicycle advocacy programs.

Highlights from 2007 include:

- At the XTERRA World Championship in Maui nearly 20 volunteers gatheredfor a three-mile trash sweep that extended from the far side of Makena “Big”Beach along the coast back to the host hotel at the Maui Prince.

- At the XTERRA USA Championship in Nevada the XTERRA Eco Team, withmore than a dozen volunteers, planted 10 trees, mixed and poured over 30bags of concrete for the foundation of bear-proof recycling boxes, installed 7stream and natural habitat protection signs, and filled several trash bags withlitter picked up along 5 miles of trail and a stream in Incline Village.

- In August in North Bend, WA the XTERRA Eco Team joined forces withSeattle's Back Country Bicycle Trails Club (BBTC) to restore a section of apopular mountain bike trail in the North Cascades. More than a dozen volun-teers worked 15ft of trail "turnpike" that had been damaged by winter storms. The crew scrounged for rock and mineral soil to make the section suitable forhorses and mountain bikes.

- Back in July for the XTERRA Vashon Island race XTERRA athletes cleanedout their garages for the Eco Team’s first "bike-cycling" event. At the race they collected bicycle parts, clothing, and any bike related com-

ponents for donation to Seattle's BikeWorks: a bicycle advocacy non-profitthat teaches bicycle maintenance skills to children of low-income families.BikeWorks uses donated equipment to teach teens how to build or repairbikes and teens are allowed to keep the bikes they build. Younger childrenreceive free bikes from Bikeworks and earn prizes for the number of milesthey ride. BikeWorks also donates recycled bicycles to The Village Project inAfrica. Gear donations were already piled up at the registration table one hour beforethe race, and the two boxes the ECO TEAM brought were at capacity as soonas they were set down. Donations included tires and tubes, new bike clothingand socks, seats, pedals, cables, chains, cranks, wheel sets, bike shoes, lights, water bottles, stickers, a steel roadbike frame, and a wonderful kids'BMX bike!

In 2008 and beyond the XTERRA Eco Team will continue to make a differenceecologically by offering a few hours of time to local environmental initiativesnear our race courses. This could be anything from trail maintenance to parkclean-up, ecological restoration, or tree planting work parties.

THE 13th XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - Oct. 26, 2008

Following an action-packed racing season that will span 16 countries with morethan 100 events, XTERRA will host its 13th XTERRA World Championship inMaui on October 26th. A season-ending blow-out like no other, the WorldChampionship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races held in Saipan,Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Brazil, Japan, Austria, UnitedKingdom, France, the Czech Republic and the U.S.The race course, considered one of XTERRA's toughest and most grueling, will

consist of a 1.5-kilometer roughwater swim at Makena Beach, a grueling 30-kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, & an 11-kilometer trail run.Access to this legendary course is permitted once a year - on race day.

Conditions change radically from year to year, diminishing the advantage torepeat competitors, and perpetuating the course's stature as among the mostintimidating in the series.

The maxed-out field is limited to 600 competitors, who represent the best off-road, multisport athletes on the planet. It is a "winner take all" race, with one ofthe richest pro purses in multisport at $125,000, and it is awarded solely on thebasis of the Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offers aunique opportunity to competitors. Even those who have had a less than stellarseason, are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn the covetedtitle of XTERRA World Champion.

Last year Conrad Stoltz captured the men’s championship and Julie Dibensfrom the UK won the women’s crown.

A special prime, the Hawaiian Airlines Double, will pay $2,500 to the man andwoman with the fastest combined Hawaii Ironman and XTERRA WorldChampionship time. Only two weeks and a narrow channel of ocean separatethe two events, which each year attract a growing number of endurance athletes. In 2007, Spain’s Eneko Llanos won the men’s double and Hungary’s ErikaCsomor won the women’s double.

The award-winning TEAM TV crew will be there to televise all the action for aone-hour sports special which will air across the national via national syndication

XTERRA BEGINNINGSIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom

Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of

XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the

Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.

"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"

explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and

entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.

The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.

Bring those two together in programming, and you've got

something big.

So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that

attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New

Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii.

Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide

leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,

and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of

Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the

Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"

Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says

Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and

TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,

it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."

ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991

TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV

shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the

benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian

Sports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, different

stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good

fun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean

Challenge and a few others televised events, including the

inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour

O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were

allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from

every country kept their amateur status so they could race

in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed

with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,

Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."

A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'

Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain

biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV

shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer

Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever

mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the

XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,

Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,

Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range

meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races

the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump

in the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have a

mountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50

shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road

triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the

Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for

their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was

looking for a new event that could tell a different story about

Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point

was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and

south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach

in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21

miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV

for the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the

marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very

subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all

the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of opportuni-

ty and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and VP of

Marketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were

thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're

forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I

immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've

got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."

THE XTERRA PLANETAt the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear thatXTERRA was going to be more than just a one-off event. There waspassion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling thatXTERRA was destined to become a lifestylea movement. We believed. So much so we restructured the company to keep it growing.

And look at what XTERRA has become

- The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From one to 100+ in 17 countries in a 11-year spanincluding a 60-stop America Tour for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour. XTERRA races can now be found onevery continent in the World (including Antarctica in 2009).

- We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them startedtowards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus thechance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

- We dish out a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garnerthe attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. off-road triathlon series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and22 amateur national champions, plus relay team and collegiate national champs, XTERRA Trail Run Series, Nationaland World Champs, and now XTERRA Winter World Champions.

- We get kids involved wherever we go with the XTERRA Kids Zone. It's a free schedule of events with running andbike races, obstacle courses, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active.

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over theworld with inspiring images of fun activities in great places.

- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, withraces in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game sowe selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website. We recently re-created XTERRAPlanet.com, whichis soon to be a complete resource for any outdoor adventure.

- With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profitspecifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.

- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Trail Running Series. This yearthere were more than 50 5k, 10k, and 21k runs reaching into 15 U.S. States. - providing more chances to participate inthe healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle. We’ll host the inaugural XTERRA Trail Running World Championship - a 21kXduro - on Dec. 7, 2008 on the island of Oahu and the U.S. National Championship in Bend, OR on Sept. 27.

- We took the XTERRA format into the snow with the creation of the XTERRA Winter World Championship.

- We created a week-long XTERRA-style adventure competition that is now the Land Rover G4 Challenge - NevadaPassage.

- We launched the XTERRA Eco Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to thecommunities that host us.
