the East Coast Regional Convention in
Fayetteville, NC and the Capital Liaison
Committee Meeting .

Unit 24 Fleet Reserve Association Sept/Oct 2015
UNIT MEETINGS: Susan Hogan, President 443-852-5929 Regular meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 7:35 p.m.
Board of Directors meetings precede regular meetings at 7:00 p.m.
Chaplain: Chaplain: Mattie Kovac – Members of the Unit, Branch and Club supported Diane and Don Hoover and their family in the re-cent loss of their son Douglas Hoover. The Unit sent cards to and visit-ed with Dottie Carter, who recovered from recent neck surgery. Please contact Mattie Kovac if Chaplain service is needed. Members may contact the Unit Chaplain or Unit President whenever someone is ill or confined to home or hospital so that members are aware of the need and can provide services to the individual. Please provide information about cards sent or visits paid to Branch or Unit members, to include in the Chaplain’s annual report.

Stacy thanked Barbara Hrynyshen for the phone calling cards donated for service members. Stacy reports that she now is an official USO member and that she plans to volunteer for the BWI Airport to meet and greet service members returning from duty. For more information, please visit http://www.operationwelcomehomemd.org/. She is collect-
ing items to be provided as Christmas gifts for troops.
Welfare: Barb Hrynyshen Barb reported that she delivered to the First Baptist Church non-perishable grocery supplies of spaghetti sauce, spaghetti noodles, hot dogs, green beans, baked beans, as well as clothing items. Barb has assembled and delivered 38 book bags for Sarah’s House containing all manner of school supplies. In August, Barb requested donations toward the purchase of food supplies for Asbury United Methodist Church’s program to supply meals to home-less citizens. Our Unit received many thank you letters from organiza-tions to which the Unit sent annual donations. Toni O’Neill received an invitation to the Lone Sailor Awards Dinner in D.C. on 9/24/15. In July, Barb delivered to the Annapolis Veterans’ Center many packs of cook-
ies, large cans of coffee, tea, and other condiments.
Membership: Diane Hoover New member Chloe Matheu was initi-ated at tonight’s meeting. Diane reports that our Unit’s membership stands at 620 as of 7/31/15. Please check your LAFRA membership renewal date, and remind friends and family members to do so. For membership questions, please call Cathleen Erickson at 410-263-3393 or e-mail [email protected]. Melanie Emerson Collins attended
July’s meeting, and will be initiated at a future meeting.
Youth Activities: Loretta Jorden (410) 956-6015 In August, Diane Hoover reported on the Annual Soap Box Derby results. Her daughter Denise’s 3 children race at Rutgers University and are sponsored by Johnson + Johnson, but still have FRA emblems on their cars. Denise’s daughter, Jessie, won first place and went to Akron, OH for the National race, following in the footsteps of her Mom and uncles. Diane’s grand-son Dustin Jr. placed first in the DC race, and his brother Dawson placed 2nd. In the National race, Dustin (“DJ”) placed 7th, which was the first time a Hoover family member placed at National. We spon-sored 18 children racing this year. Loretta Jorden registered her young-est daughter for her last year of Girl Scouts. A Senior Girl Scout col-lected over 800 books for her gold award project to establish a library at
a local Boys and Girls Club. Soup can labels and box tops are needed.
Publicity: Virginia Jorden Meeting notices are submitted for publi-cation in the Capital Gazette and the Annapolis community news online. E-mail messages are circulated to Unit members on a regular basis concerning upcoming events. Any member wishing to have their e-mail address updated or added to the circulation list, please

Unit Activities: Anne Tydings Committees and their new Chairs are: CLC Representative: Sylvia Wainio; Las Vegas Night 11/7/15: Diane Hoover, assisted by Mary Ann Gordon, and by Toni O’Neill as banker; Christmas Party 12/1/15: TBD; Chili Cook-off - 2/6/16: Virgin-ia Jorden; Birthday Dinner – 6/4/16 meeting): TBD; Spring Dance – 6/7/16: Toni O’Neill and Sylvia Wainio. Volunteers are always need-ed to help with event planning, preparation and ticket sales! Hospital: Linda Masterson –A donation box for eyeglasses is locat-ed in the Club lobby. Bingo at the Nursing Home resumes on 9/24/15. Please contact Sylvia Wainio for information on volunteering to help with this project at [email protected]. Stacy Fazekas has volunteered to help the members who keep the Bingo games going for the Nursing Home residents. Volunteers are needed to help the patients, who greatly enjoy the games and visits, as well as the prizes and gifts that our Unit supplies. Socks are always a welcome gift, for those needing donation suggestions. Refreshment Committee: Sylvia Wainio asks members to bring a small snack to share at the Unit meeting on 9/1/15. Unfinished Business: Toni O’Neill reported on the East Coast Re-gional Convention in Fayetteville NC which she attended July 23-26 with our other Delegates C. Erickson, K. Bearden, and S. Wainio. All went well, a few National officers were present, but attendance of about 50 people was low. This year’s ECR officers are President: Katherine Bearden; Vice President: Shirley Vatter; Treasurer: Cindy Jones; Secretary: Cathleen Erickson; Parliamentarian: Doreen Huyle-broeck and Jr. Past President: Toni O’Neill. Next year, the ECR will have a speaker, no opening ceremonies, 1 day training, and will be held in Richmond, VA during the last week of August. Further infor-mation will be provided. In 2016 the National Convention will be held in Jacksonville, FL. At the ECR, Unit 24 took first place awards for all Committee reports except for the Bonnie Bastian Membership award. Our Welfare Committee’s report received the Elsie Cooley Award. New Business: Several Unit members volunteered to help at the joint membership drive on 8/15/15, and received several new applica-tions. Raffle drawing for the Hawaii trip was done during the event. Good of the Order: Diane and her family are extremely appreciative for all of the support from the Unit, Branch and Club after the loss of their son Doug on 7/9/15. Claire Purdy’s son’s moving van caught fire and his belongings were burned – he was in the process of mov-ing east from the west coast. Kathy McCruden thanked members for get well cards sent to her brother-in-law Joseph Burke (retired Navy Chief and former Branch member) recuperating from back surgery. Sylvia Wainio reported that she attended Barbara Malm’s servce at the Barranco & Sons Funeral Home in Severna Park. Emma Matheu sends her thanks for our prayers and well wishes after her recent surgery. Loretta Jorden reported that her godfather, who is her Mom’s uncle, passed away in PA recently. The wedding date for Stacy Fazekas and her fiancé Tom is set for 6/18/2016.

Veterans Day—11 November, 11 a.m. City Dock Circle
The VA has designated the FRA, Branch 24 sponsored
Veterans Day Observance in Annapolis to be the official
regional site for the state of Maryland .
Though many organizations host their own Veterans Day
Ceremnony, this special acknowledgement will encourage
all veterans who may not be associated with a particular
veterans group to come and honor the sacrifice they chose
to make for the USA. Please join us.

Fleet Reserve Club, Branch, and Auxiliary
For Hospitals, Welfare and Rehabilitation, Shipmate Mike
Patria for starting and coaching the quadriplegic rugby sports
team, Maryland Mayhem. Currently the team consists of 10
athletes, 2 of them are veterans (one Army & one Navy).
He has networked through VSO’s to reach other disbled Vets
and to provide them with information that may help in en-
hancing their lives. He encourages everyone interested to
come out, support these inspiring men and women and be
part of something bigger than themselves.
They play every Wednesday, 6 - 9 p.m. at the Greater Loch
Raven Recreation Center, 1801 Glen Keith Blvd, Parkville,
MD 21234

Br 24 has two winners for the Shipmate of the Year from the East Coast Regional Convention!
Winners will be considered for a National Award at the National Convention in October.
For Americanism & Patriotism, Shipmate Carleton Weidemey-
er for assisting Macpherson “Mac” Plecker to reconstruct his
service record in order to obtain the medals and awards he nev-
er received. “Mac” Plecker was a WWII Navy Veteran who
was captured on Wake Island and spent the entire time as a
Japanes Prisoner of War. All of his personnel pay and medical
records were lost in the invasion.
Shipmate Weidemeyer spent countless hours researching the
military service of Mr. Plecker to the ending result, Mr. Pleck-
er was recognized and presented with the following awards:
1. Purple Heart
2. Prisoner of War Medal
3. Navy Good Conduct Medal
4. American Defense Service Medal
5. Asiatic—Pacific Campaign Medal
6. Combat Service Action Ribbon
7. WWII Victory Medal
8. Presidential Unit Citation awarded by President Roosevelt to
the Defenders of Wake, US Flag flown over the Capital, and a
Congressional Citizenship award.
Mr. Plecker received his awards before he passed on to the
Supreme Commander.

Shipmate Penny Collins on her

President.

She is known for always hav-
ing fundraiser tickets for sale
for many other FRA Branches,

and our recent Hawaiian raffle.
