Accessibility
You can be dropped off outside the lift that runs from the basement car park, to level 1 where the café and Box Office is or up to level 2 where the auditorium and bar is.
There is a short walk into the auditorium from the lift. Alternatively, you can be dropped off at our drop off point at the top of the ramp adjacent to the theatre, where there is a short distance into the auditorium.
It is really important to us when presenting work that anyone should be able to access it, whatever their circumstances.
We want to welcome everyone and are working hard to make as much of the Festival as we can accessible to all.
All live performances on the Main Stage, as well as the online Panel Discussion, will be both BSL interpreted and captioned.
We know that access provision is constantly evolving and that your individual access needs might change over time, so please do get in touch if you require BSL or captions on other events or if have any additional requirements by emailing [email protected]

A provocative and riotous look at the imposed ghettoisation experienced by people who are intellectually disabled and neurodivergent.
States of Independence takes its audience on a journey through the lived experience and taboo subjects that this disenfranchised section of the population grapple with on a daily basis. The result is at once a metaphorical ‘slap in the face’ and an affectionate embrace that whispers to you to understand and take action.

A Good Neet Ahtby Phil Green
It’s about the places that make us. It’s about growing up and moving away. It’s about where we’ve been and where we are now. It’s about belonging and not belonging. It’s about not fitting in and finding a place to fit in. It’s about here. It’s about there. It’s about me and it’s about you.
Join Phil as he recreates the 1968 Rugby League Cup Final, his mum and dad’s Silver Wedding party, U16 disco night at the Mecca and his favourite beer ads.

Don’t Leave Me This Way Good Grief by Zoo Indigo by Ugly Bucket
Don’t Leave Me This Way is a concert that never quite happens.
The Zoo Indigo duo perform a series of citizenship catwalks to a live soundscore, as they audition for their motherland.
In a playful and provocative exploration of cultural belonging, they grieve the loss of identity, home, and the Eurovision song contest.
In 2019, Zoo Indigo embarked on an odyssey across Europe; searching for identity along the shores of Budapest; crossing the Irish sea to the docks of Dun Laoghaire.
They collected stories, folk dances and lyrics along the way, their
journey now brings them to their final call.

A dying man’s wish; for Ugly Bucket to create a show about death. Will it be subtle? Will it be sophisticated? Probably not, but it’s his funeral. Literally.
The multi award-winning company Ugly Bucket process the death of a friend in the only way they know how; through a high energy maelstrom of clowning, movement, verbatim, and thumping techno tracks.
‘It’s fast, it’s funny and it plumbs the emotional depths exquisitely’ - The Stage. Featured by BBC Stories, Good Grief is a paranormal physical performance of loss and the memories left behind.

REPRESENT! Disabled Artists
A work-in-progress showcase featuring performances from disabled artists from theatre-makers to dancers.
The idea of this platform is to support the artist’s new ideas and get some feedback from audience via a digital form- Come and support, be open-minded and constructive!
Watch pieces by Lauren Russell, Neal Pike and Nadia Nadarajah.
Lauren Russell: ‘I am...’ is an evolving piece exploring how past experiences shape who we are today.
In particular, it focuses on Lauren’s adapting dance practice as her circumstances have changed and how missing out on doing something you love affects
your identity. After the past year, this theme will be relatable to many.
Neal Pike: This is a story about growing up, small villages and grandparents. It’s about growing up with learning disabilities and struggling to make friends. It’s about finding freedom, space and moments of silence through walking.
Nadia Nadaraja: “This or That is about a person who has many identities in her life. The journey of life has to choose the path, but how many paths did she has been?”

As per government advice, we’ve retrained. We’ve spent the last year developing some skills. We’ve shaken hands with Rishi Sunak and promised him we’d show all you thespians how much more employable we are now.
For one night only, IN BED WITH MY BROTHER will present something so meaningless and completely chaotic that everyone will leave in agreement that theatre is dead. There will be prologues and narrative threads and several intervals. And they’ll all be boring. But we’ll still charge you 50 quid for an ice cream. [Exeunt] pursued by a career in cyber bay-beeeee.

Cyclicalby Michael Pinchbeck
Cyclical sees Michael cycle on an exercise bike in his home for 4 hours, the time it would take to get from where he lives outside Nottingham (where he spent lockdown) and Derby Theatre and then back again. He will cycle the equivalent distance of 50km and audience members will be invited to join him for 15 minutes at a time to accompany him on his journey and share stories of bikes and bike rides and the cyclical nature of working from home. He is cycling for work. He is cycling from home to Derby. He is busy going nowhere.
Please bring a bottle of water to the Zoom meeting so you can share a drink with Michael on his journey. If you have one please feel free to cycle along on your own exercise bike.
This event has extremely limited availability.

In response to how many freelancers have come into view and are stepping up to be heard in a way they’ve not before, we wanted to provide some focus on the needs and successes in the independent sector.
Some questions IGC continually ask include:
What are the needs of freelancers about how we can move forward to address them?
Where are the independent leaders and what new directions are they leading us into?
How do we raise the profile of independents and their groundbreaking projects as evidence of their integral part in making
& sharing theatre with communities and audiences?
The panel brings together: Sarah Brigham (Artistic Director & CEO of Derby Theatre); Dr Cecila Wee (Independent curator, educator and agitator) Sunita Hinduja and Adele Thomas (Freelancers Make Theatre Work) and a representative from Inc Arts.
Early booking strongly advised.

36 Questions That Lead To Love
by Lynn Lu
Physical distancing in pandemic times has translated into sustained social isolation for many of us.
Operating within this new normal – which inhibits our evolutionarily hard-wired need to connect with others – 36 Questions that Lead to Love is an invitation to explore intimacy and generate interpersonal closeness across a virtual divide through a scored series of shared confidences.
One participant at a time will join the artist for 50 minutes on Zoom, and work through the 36 questions together.
The experience will culminate with handwriting a letter and reverse-pickpocketing it.
This performance has extremely limited availability.

Cloudscapes is a duologue for performer and clouds in an outdoor auditorium — a cloud-gazing area.
Whilst a performer tells stories of her relationship with the troposphere, audiences are encouraged to look up and contemplate the mutability of clouds, as well as the mutability of humanity.
Even the most seemingly featureless skies provide plentiful material. Cloudscapes is a very personal, human-scale work about clouds, with a focus on the role of clouds in climate change.
It premiered at the Inside Out Dorset Festival in September
2016 on the dramatic coastal site of Hengistbury Head.
