HOW IT WORKS
The YMCA Children’s Unified Benefits and Services and UP 21 will be hosting iCan Shine’s
renowned iCan Bike program in the Castine Center at Pelican Park. The purpose is to
teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a conventional bike and become lifelong
independent riders. The program will take place June 17-21, 2019.
iCan Bike uses a fleet of adapted bicycles, a specialized instructional program, and a
trained staff to teach individuals with disabilities how to ride a bike. Riders attend the
same 75-minute session each day for five consecutive days where they will be physically
assisted and encouraged by two volunteer “spotters.”
Over the course of the 5-day camp the adapted bike is adjusted to gradually introduce
more instability in an effort to challenge riders at their own individual pace. The week is
concluded with a touching and inspiring award ceremony!
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Be a Volunteer
Be a “spotter” for the same rider for each of the 5 days and experience the joy of help-
ing someone learn to ride! 75 invigorating minutes per day… it just may be the most re-
warding exercise and emotional experience you’ve ever had!
Be a Sponsor
Support children and youth with special needs in our community by becoming a spon-
sor for this incredible event. Sponsors will be recognized on program shirts, on social me-
dia and the YMCA’s website, print materials, and through other promotional opportuni-
ties.

Y CUBS’ Hosts 1st Responder Autism Training
YMCA Children's Unified Benefits and Services (Y CUBS) hosted a successful 6 hour "1st Responder Autism Training" on March 22nd. It was open to Law Enforcement, Fire Fighters, EMS, Security, Criminal Justice and anyone else that may encounter an individual on the autism spectrum in an emergency situation.
The training was led by Captain William Cannata and Lieutenant Jimmy Donohoe who have been delivering this training across the country for many years. This training covered a wide variety of important topics and skills, including: tools for agencies to address autism related field contact situations, communication and behavior, sensory issues, de-escalation techniques, and detaining/arresting/restraining and custody situations.
Quotes from our participants:
“Thank you for coming out and sharing your personal experience. I plan to
take your point of view and training and my own personal experiences back
to my department.”
“I believe that this training should be provided to all public servants. This is a
valuable training and would be good for anyone dealing with the public.”
”Presenters were very knowledgeable and engaging. Information presented
was very good and taught me a topic that I was not familiar with. This
training will definitely help me to do my job better. Very thankful that Amy
and the YMCA hosted this training.”
