Farm to School programs bring locally produced products to students through snack programs, school lunches, and school gardens. Community partners (Cedar Valley Blue Zones Project, Black Hawk County Public Health, FoodCorps, ISUEO, UNI Health Promotion, UNI RRTTC, UNI CEEE) provide this experiential learning to help children appreciate fresh, local foods early in life. This is mutually beneficial to the students, farmers, and communities. For more information, contact the UNI Local Food Program at 319-273-7883.

A non-profit mobile produce stand that operates in multiple neighborhoods throughout Waterloo. In collaboration with many partners, the Greens to Go produce stand helps increase access to locally grown fruits and vegetables. The stand operates outdoors from June-Oct and indoors from Nov-Dec and March-May. Last summer several youth employees assisted in harvesting and selling, and last fall the Greens to Go team was lucky to hire two Waterloo community members part-time. The team hopes to continue to connect people to their local agriculture while helping customers make beneficial lifestyle changes.
Check out the Facebook page (WaterlooGreensToGo) if you are interested in volunteering or for more details about our 2017 locations.
Did you know you can plant and donate extra produce to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank?
Our food bank serves an average of 5,800 people per week. We distribute over 5 million meals to our member agencies and programs. A tax credit is available for those who donate produce!
Last year, contributors donated almost 68,000 pounds of fresh produce to the food bank.
Do you have produce gleaning opportunities and/or want to volunteer to glean produce? Learn more about the tax credit and/or gleaning!
