Dear Motor Medics,I’ve got a Nissan Titan and it has a ticking noise in the engine. It

has had this for about a year and it doesn’t seem to get any louder, but it makes me nervous about taking it on trips far from home. When I have my engine oil changed my shop says it’s just lifters and they probably are noisy because I tended to change my en-gine oil every 10k miles, I know, that’s too long between changes. I recently put in an additive that cleans the engine oil system and the noise stopped for two weeks then came back. Should I try two cans at the same time?

Dear Carry, NO! That’s the best way we can answer that last question.

Never use an additive in a way not directed by the manufac-turer of said product or you risk permanent damage. Additives have their place and if used as directed sometimes can fix a problem and save you a ton of money, but they are also some of the most abused products out there. With your extended oil changes, you probably clogged up some oil passages and using the cleaner helped restore them. Most of those cleaners are meant to be installed, then the engine oil changed within a few minutes of running. If that works then you may be able to repeat every 1000k miles for a few months and you may save the engine.

sick of these things. It seems like every vehicle I drive has the low tire light on and even when I add the correct amount of air the light still stays on. How do these things work and how can I shut the light off permanently so that I don’t have to worry about it.

Dear Derik, Yikes! It’s never any fun having a light come on and taunt

you like that. Check Engine lights, ABS lights and Low Tire lights are some of the most annoying things on a car, but they all are there for a reason. They either are trying to save your life or the cars life. In the case of a low tire light it is the former. Low tire warning systems were made mandatory by the govern-ment for safety a while back due to so many accidents caused by tire failure from under inflation. The system uses pressure sensors mounted in the tire usually on the valve stem and they contain batteries and a transmitter to relay the pressure and tire temp to the vehicles computer where it determines if it is a safe pressure and either illuminates the warning lamp or not. The system can’t be bypassed, and it would not be legal to do so. Get it diagnosed. Most shops can repair them at a reasonable price.


Dear Motor Medics,I own a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible. Its an SS with

the 6.2 engine and I have added a supercharger and nitrous oxide to it. I have 50k miles on the car. The problem I am having is with the top. When I put it down it seems to drag and when going up it will also drag so bad that it will stop

and I have to wait a few seconds and try again unless I help it up. The problem first started about a year after I added the horsepower upgrades and started running it at the track. That has been about 3k miles.

Dear Tommy,The binding can be caused by many things but the prob-

lem you are describing can be a mechanical binding issue. In our shop we would start the diagnosis by removing the power component from the top after verification of the bind. We would then operate the top manually with two persons and verify the spot of the bind. At that point we should be able to see either a twist or a worn spot on the top mecha-nism which we would repair. It is very possible that all the added horsepower has caused the car to twist and dam-aged the top mechanism if you have not added suspension stiffeners or a roll bar. Once it’s repaired if the damage was caused by the horsepower the frame support issue should be addressed.


Dear Motor Medics,I have a 2004 GMC Envoy XUV. It is the one with the Ver-

saGate on the back which has a roll down window and a gate that opens not only as a fold down but also as a side gate. For several years, the gate has given me problems. The first was the wiper not working followed by the gate not folding down. I could still get it open if I used the side swing but lately even that will not work most of the time. I have taken it to two different shops who both said they could not figure out what is wrong with it even though they can verify the issue I am having. They also both charged me $100 to look at it.

Dear Zach, The gates can be problematic as they get older but there

are a couple of common issues. If the wiper motor fails, the window will not work and the gate wont fold down. The wiper motor has a safety switch to tell the module if the wiper arm is parked so it wont damage the arm. Also, if the window motor doesn’t sense the window is

down all the way the gate will not fold down because a folded gate with glass up could damage the glass.

Another thing is simply a dirty latch and broken wires in the jamb of the hatch. These are just a few to check.
