Hello from City Park! Last week Ms. Bousha’s class had Crazy Hat day on Tuesday, Crazy Sock day on Wednesday Crazy Hair day on Thursday and Backwards day on Friday. Ms. Irene’s class joined in the fun as well for Crazy Hair and Backwards day. The children had so much fun. We are continuing our investigation of clothes. This week, Ms.

City Park

Bousha’s class will be talking about “How do we take care of clothes. In the Discovery Center, they will be experimenting to decide which soap makes the best bubbles. They will also be looking at different fabrics with the magnifying glass. In the art center, they will be painting with soap. They will be making soap play dough. One of the books they are reading this week is “A Pocket for Corduroy”. They will be decorating their own Corduroy. Ms. Irene’s class will be looking at how fabric is made. They will be sewing fabric together with child safe needles. They will be making a loom to make their own fabric. They will be weaving paper as well as play dough. During outdoor playtime, the children will be playing a new game called, “windows” and learning how to jump rope.

Pre- School Part Day, Full Day:

This week in the State Preschool Program, we will continue our study of trees and nature by investigating who lives in trees. The class will be creating art on insects, birds, monkeys, and tree frogs throughout the week. Children will also have the opportunity to make their own bird feeders using a pinecone and also create a nest using items from the outdoors.

Calvert Preschool:

Coming up next week, we will be finishing our tree unit! We will be exploring trees and how trees change colors during different seasons. The kids will be making trees with masking tape and water colors. They will also be hands on with puffy paint, finger paint, apple basket weaving, tissue butterflies and snails out of coffee filters! Our letters that we will be focusing on this week are H, M and F.

School Age:

This week , will be learning about Spring weather and celebrating Earth day. We too, will be hands on making recycled crafts not only from nature, but with items from home. We will study the power of winds and make our own windmills and wind chimes. All with recycled items! We will finish making our terrariums for the classroom and review the study of seeds and their helpful cycles.

This week the teens focused on creating their own art projects using different types of methods and materials. The teens would draw a picture or image, and instead of just coloring it in, they used magazines to find the colors they needs to fill in their pictures. This created different patterns and textures within the drawing. Another project involved drinking straws and paint. They dipped the end of the drinking straw into the paint and blew it onto a poster pa-per, creating unique patterns, color mix-tures and endless creativity! Harada Theme: Spring time Herb Garden For Children Our students are enjoying spring time. Last week they had

a lot of fun learning about spring flowers. This week they will learn how to grow a garden. The children love to learn and explore nature so it will be exciting for them to follow some tips about planting herbs and how to take care of the plants. They will also learn that herbs are important as ingredients in the food we eat every day. In addition to this, the children will plant their own herbs which include cilantro, oregano, parsley, and basil. Wednesday we will do Dictation and illustration day based on the book, “I'm a Seed.” Friday we will make a vegetable soup, that we all will enjoy!!

We will be learning about recycling and the students will collect newspapers, water bottles, milk cartons, cereal boxes at home and bring in to class. We will inventory the type of recyclable items they find. They will use these items to make recycled art. They will then analyze and describe their art. The homework this week will be focused on math and a science project. We will play I spy, Wii, build puzzles, ride bikes, play with the balls and jump ropes.

First 5 Toddlers – This week we will be working on a weather theme where we will be doing an ice art activity, spray bottle painting, salt painting, watercolors on coffee filters, lacing rain boot cutouts with yarn, and singing songs such as “Blow, Blow, Blow the Wind” to the tune of Row, Row, Row your boat. State Toddlers – Tie Dye will be continued, this is a way of introducing colors. We will be talking about the colors of spring and the colors of the vegetables that will be growing in our garden. Bottle spray painting and colorful bubbles we will explore with children. Collage with tissue paper, coffee filter, spray bottles and glue. We will finish the week by tie dying cloth pieces donated by parents. Preschool Classroom - will continue to study buildings and focus this week on who works in the

buildings and what kind of jobs they do, such as teachers, cooks, and grocery clerks. Our books this week will focus on buildings and we will use flannel board pieces to retell the story. We will demonstrate some jobs through pictures and children will create drawings of jobs they see people do. School age - The children will be caring for the plants this week. Children will be continuing art projects of using spring colors. Children will be playing games in small groups such as dominoes, checkers etc. Children

will continue to have organized outdoor soccer games in small teams.

Students are working on the new curriculum study called, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Study. The children will learn several ways to reuse materials, and use their own imagination and creativity to reuse materials. The children will investigate about what people throw away in trash cans. They will learn how items are grouped together, as recyclables, which helps people know, what items will be recycled. They will learn about how some trash, stinks and some does not. They will be asked questions like what did you throw away today, was it recyclable? The children will be able to talk about what ways, they can throw less trash away and reuse some materials, instead of throwing them away. They will continue to work on art projects, with reusable materials.

The children will guess how many trash cans we have at our school. They will talk about the importance of trash cans in certain places like the classrooms, bathrooms, and outside trash cans. They will talk about the various sizes of trash cans and see similarities between trash cans.

The children will listen to the story called, “I Stink”,

by Kate and Jim McMullan and the story called, Hush, by Minfong Ho. They will also, learn new vocabulary

words, such as, junk, waste,

pile, apple cores, candy

wrappers, garbage, and leftover.

This week we got a call from Thoro Packaging to donate printed popcorn boxes for our Corona-Norco Family YMCA. We will be receiving the in-kind donation of 2,500 printed popcorn boxes. Thank you Thoro Packaging!

We are always working on improving our sites to protect our families we serve. This week at the Harada site, the new fence was finished! Isn’t it beautiful?

Communication Corner On Saturday, April 25th this organization, JustServe Helping Hands/The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and their volunteers will be at the City Park, Jurupa, and Main Y sites to assist in clearing out and organizing the storage containers/areas. Key staff will be at each site to assist and to inventory everything in each container/area.

The main contacts from JustServe are Shandra Carlsen for the Corona area and Curt Seymore for the Jurupa group. This group has a day every April that they have volunteers serve different agencies/projects in their area.

Home Depot Community Project has approved a grant to renovate the existing soccer stadium at the Main Y Facility. The in kind donation gift is worth $50,000 plus in-kind labor to do the project in two days: April 29 and 30. The Home Depot Team will provide materials, supplies, and labor through their Team Depot staff volunteers.

We are proud supporters of buying local! Every week we get a delivery from the Griffith Family Farms of oranges so that we ensure our students are eating fresh fruit daily.
