Mitch McConnell thought he had the final word.

A new exhibit at Gracie Mansion features more than 60 works of art, spanning an era when women were first allowed to vote until the present day.

The exhibit “She Persists: A Century of Women Artists in New York, 1919-2019” includes works by 44 female artists, including Kara Walker, Faith Ringgold, Alice Neel and even First Lady Chirlane McCray’s mom, Katharine Clarissa Eileen McCray.

The exhibit is organized around four central themes: contending with history; body as battleground; picturing people; and expanding abstraction.

Quashie Hand Crafted Dolls are a tribute to her own mother, whose maiden name, Quashie, was West African. The handmade dolls in the show were created when there were few black and brown options for children. McCray was a self-taught doll maker. She embroidered them, and dressed them in traditional African fabrics. The three dolls represent each of her daughters, Chirlane, Cynthia and Cheryl, which she gave to each child.The new exhibit is open to

the public until December.

It might be his first year in the league, but he’s no novice.

Before making it to the National Basketball Association (NBA), Angel Delgado, who grew up in Bajos de Haina in the Dominican Republic, was a star at Seton Hall University. During his college tenure, the “big man” was the Big East Conference’s all-time leading rebounder, and the winner of the prestigious Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award in 2018, which is presented to the top center in college

basketball. He has also played for the

Dominican National Team.The 24-year-old now plays

as center with the Los Angeles Clippers, and was on the East Coast and uptown this past week.

Wearing a black hoodie that read “Dominican Power,” the 6’10”, 245-pound player paid a special visit to local students from the Harbor Heights Middle School on February 15th. The children attend the school’s afterschool program, run by the YM and YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood.

Delgado said he was motivated to visit the school since he shared the student’s immigrant background.

“It’s important to me because these kids are just like I was,” he said. “They know they have someone like them they can do a lot of good things in life and they can be really motivated.”

He’s also no stranger to uptown life. His family moved from the Dominican Republic

to the Bronx when he was 15, and he was in town to visit with them during the NBA’s All-Star Break.

Delgado answered some questions from students, signed autographs, and even briefly showed off some slam-dunk moves in the school’s gym.

He said the message he hoped to convey to students is that “anything is possible.”

“There’s no reason they can’t be like me,” he said.

N ew York State Attorney General Letitia James filed a

lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California challenging President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency in a bid to build a wall at the Mexican border, and his attempt to divert funding appropriated by Congress for other purposes.

The complaint alleges that Trump’s emergency declaration and diversion of funds is unconstitutional and otherwise unlawful.

Joining in filing the lawsuit are the Attorneys General of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, and Virginia.

The states seek to block the Trump administration’s emergency declaration, unauthorized construction of the border wall

and any illegal diversion of Congressionally-appropriated funds.

The suit points out that unlawful southern border entries are at their lowest point in twenty-years, immigrants are less likely than native-born citizens to commit crimes and illegal drugs are more likely to come through official ports of entry.

When we harness the power of students,

families and parents, we can create lasting change in our school communities.

That’s why I want to let parents know about an important opportunity: the application period for Educational Council elections is open.

This is an amazing opportunity to get involved—Community and Citywide Educational Councils are critical for lifting up the voices of our school communities.

Parents and families can apply for the following Education Councils: Community Education Councils (CECs) for the district where your child’s school is located; the Citywide Council on High Schools; the Citywide Council on Special Education; the Citywide Council on English Language Learners; and the Citywide Council for District 75.

These Education Councils hold town halls for their communities, and they advise me, our superintendents, and our high-level DOE officials on key policy issues. Community Education Councils also hold hearings on the School Capital Plan and approve school zoning lines.

Our Education Councils get results. In the past year, parent leaders have asked for more air conditioning and technology in our schools, as well as a school system that’s more streamlined and responsive to their questions. And we’ve delivered—speeding up our Air Conditioning for All initiative, investing in school technology, and creating Executive Superintendent positions to empower our parents and give them clear lines of communication.

Every parent can run for an Education Council. It doesn’t matter what language you speak or if you just moved to this country—I want to see your name on the ballot.

And as important as it is to run, it’s also important to vote!

If you’re a PTA officer, it is your responsibility to vote on behalf of your school. This is your chance to elect the next Education Council members and help shape the direction of our schools. Take advantage of the opportunities to meet the candidates over the next few months and be sure to cast a ballot.

M anhattan Borough President Gale Brewer always had

strong opinions on the city’s plan to bring Amazon’s new headquarters to New York City.

When the deal was first announced last November, Brewer criticized the city for skirting the Universal Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) and including billions in tax breaks for the company, which is valued at around a trillion dollars.

However, she agreed to join an advisory committee convened by the city and state to examine community concerns around the Amazon deal and oversee discussion on workforce development.

Brewer said she was “totally shocked” when Amazon revealed last Thursday it decided to back out of the deal, especially

since staffers from her office had met that same morning with Amazon executives and advisors to Governor Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“We had no idea,” she said. “Mr. Cox, who is the head of Amazon here in New York, he didn’t know. I talked to him later on in the day, and he didn’t know they were pulling the plug until after the meeting. Nor did my staff, nor did the mayor’s staff. So, that’s how it was done in Seattle.”

After Amazon scrapped the plan, de Blasio chastised the tech giant for backing away while Cuomo reserved his ire for Democratic elected officials such as State Senator Michael Gianaris, who sought to kill the project.

Brewer said there wasn’t one party to blame, but pointed out that Amazon needed to do more than court acceptance from elected officials.

“I think there’s plenty of blame to go around,” Brewer said during a recent conversation with The Manhattan Times. “But I don’t think you should rely on your elected officials either way, for or against. I think [Amazon] should have relied on community people, or talked to some of the other companies who have done it right. That would have been the way to do it.”

“It’s a loss for New York, but it wasn’t done right,” she remarked.

While some backers of the Amazon HQ2 deal voiced concern that a large number of tech jobs would not be coming to New York City, Brewer said that the city’s tech industry would still thrive, noting that Google, Facebook and Microsoft have corporate offices in Manhattan. Apple has a corporate office and has opened numerous stores in recent years.

She suggested that things might have gone differently for Amazon had it conducted community engagement prior to the agreement. She pointed to Google as an

example, saying the company did not receive similar tax breaks to come to New York, sought buy-in from local residents and maintains an “impeccable” record in the community.

“It’s a little bit different because they did it from the ground up,” Brewer said of Google. “They didn’t announce they were buying the building on 15th Street — they worked the community first. So, I think if the Governor and the Mayor had said to Amazon, wherever you go in New York, you need to work with the community first, it would have been different. I think Amazon’s not used to doing that.”

Small business owners have rights to protect them and their workers in the event of a raid by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Though the Trump administration has stepped up the frequency of workplace immigration arrests, immigrant advocates are counseling small business owners that there are protections in place they should be aware of.

“There are larger forces that are happening right now,” remarked Fernández, who noted that a federal mandate requires that 34,000 immigration detention beds must be filled on a daily basis. “When you have that combined with [an ICE agent’s] own discretion, it

creates a very dangerous situation.”While ICE agents are permitted to come

into a public space such as a dining area in a restaurant or bar, they are not allowed to stop, question, or arrest anyone in that public space unless they have a judicial warrant, Fernández said.

Because it is not issued by a judge, this warrant does not give ICE the right to demand entry to a home or private space in order to make an arrest.

“That is not a document that permits an arrest,” Fernández said. “It’s important to know the difference, it’s important to stay calm and ask for that piece of paper.”

At first they were skeptical.

Lauraliz Morales-Silva, Community Manager at Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC), invited women who regularly attend scheduled events to take a free yoga classes. Not everyone was excited about it. Some women were unfamiliar with it. Others weren’t even sure if they had the right clothes.

But after an hour, the women came out elated.

“They were so surprised,” said Morales-Silva. “They were like, 'Oh my God! I’m so relaxed.’”

Next week, even more people stayed.For 40 years, NMIC, a Washington

Heights-based nonprofit, has offered a variety of community services. People can take advantage of free legal and tax help, educational and career opportunities, community organizing events and group

counseling. NMIC handles intervention but focuses on long-term strategies. The new yoga program is just one aspect of developing individual and community empowerment.

“It’s really a whole host of things to help people gain a newer understanding of themselves and more independence, and feel safer over the long term,” said Sarah Crawford Banda, NMIC’s Domestic Violence Project Director.

The classes offered at NMIC are a special type of yoga. Taught by volunteers from Exhale to Inhale, a small nonprofit that incorporates a trauma-informed methodology in its yoga training program. The yoga classes are specifically designed for people who have undergone trauma.

Classes are all about feeling safe. The lights are on and students face the exit. The yoga teacher, a native Spanish speaker, doesn’t roam around the room during the sessions, or touch anyone. The teacher offers students different

options during the class.“Slow is fast,” said Zoë LePage, Founder

and Executive Director of Exhale to Inhale. Exhale to Inhale offers yoga classes at domestic violence shelters, and organizations such as NMIC in all five boroughs and in Los Angeles.

how yoga transformed her friends who were survivors of domestic violence. Although she has never been in that situation, LePage knows why it works.

“I have the experience of being anxious and hyper vigilant,” she said. “I live the majority of my life in my head. But yoga makes you feel grounded. It brings me, in a real physical, tangible way, into my body and into this moment. That’s similar to what we are doing with our clients, who are also hyper vigilant for the next thing that may happen.”

Exhale to Inhale’s trauma-informed yoga program has been five years in the making. Most of the team members and instructors are trauma survivors. “We’ve pulled from the best practices,” she said.

In a traditional yoga class, teachers often tell students what they should be feeling—how a downward dog brings a deep stretch in the hamstrings, or a lift in the calves. But sometimes survivors of domestic violence or other traumas don’t feel anything because they are disassociated from their body. “Or they might feel it,” said LePage. “And it might be terrifying because they’ve been disassociated.”

“We tell people it’s okay to be uncomfortable,” she said. “It’s like dipping a toe into the water. We are guiding people through the practice.”

New York City’s economy continued to grow in the fourth quarter of 2018, as unemployment continued to fall, according to a new report from City Comptroller Scott Stringer.

Stringer’s Quarterly Economic Update showed that the New York’s gross city product grew 3.9 percent, the highest rate of 2018, during Q4 2018, while the unemployment rate fell from 4.1 percent in Q3 2018 to 4.0 percent in Q4 2018.

The city added 34,000 private sector jobs in the last quarter, the report said. More than half of the new private-sector jobs created were in low-wage industries. For the full year of 2018, total private-sector jobs were up by 74,200 or 1.9 percent – making this the ninth consecutive year of job creation and the longest sequence of job gains on record.

Other findings in Stringer’s Q4 2018 report:• The number of employed city residents

rose by 6,700 in Q4 2018 to a record high of almost 4.1 million.

• The average hourly earnings of all private NYC employees rose 3.4 percent on a year-over-year basis to $36.69 in Q4 2018.

• Total venture capital investment in the New York metro area rose to a record high of $13.33 billion in 2018, 8.7 percent higher than in 2017, despite a decline in the fourth quarter.

• New commercial leasing activity in Manhattan increased 45.1 percent to over 10.2 million square feet in the fourth quarter, the biggest fourth quarter increase on record.

Many law-abiding immigrants living in the United States

are just a legal action away from deportation.

New York State now offers additional legal services to protect these residents.

New York State’s Liberty Defense Project (LDP) and the Vera Institute of Justice already provide representation to detained immigrants facing deportation proceedings. Services under Vera’s New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP) have expanded.

For the next two years, NYIFUP will provide representation to immigrants who have been detained under prior orders of removal. Unrepresented immigrants facing deportation at the Batavia, Ulster, Downstate and Bedford Hills immigration courts are eligible for services.

New York Secretary of State Rossana Rosado said, “The Vera Institute of Justice’s work has helped hundreds of New Yorkers fight back against the Trump Administration’s callous immigration policies. “Yoga kind of sells itself,” said LePage. “But it’s necessary for staff. Turnover rates in organizations are high. They are suffering from burnout and secondary trauma,” she said.

The first time Morales-Silva tried a regular yoga class, she didn’t love it, either. Quickly breathing in and out made her dizzy. The rapid succession of up and down poses was stressful. She thought holding her breath for eight counts might trigger an asthma attack.

Exhale to Inhale’s methodology is a slow-is-fast mindset. “That’s more impactful than running through poses,” LePage said. Instead of a quickly-moving athletic class, it is more about choices, and what level of poses that make students feel comfortable.

Many of their clients face all sorts of restrictions, said Banda. They may live in shelters with curfews. “They may not have legal status in this country. They may not be able to speak the language to their kid’s teacher. In so many different ways, they go about their daily lives not having control.”

“For many of our clients, that is the first time so many choices are being presented to them,” Morales-Silva said. “It’s not just like we have this to offer because it’s trendy and it’s cool. It’s also part of the healing and empowerment that we are trying to provide through our other services.”

Another important aspect of the classes is the community it provides. Many of the

women who come to NMIC have been attending support group sessions for more than 10 years. “They have shared experiences together. A lot of people keep coming because of the community,” said Morales-Silva. “They are in a different situation now in terms of their inter-partner violence, but they come because it’s a place of community. And that’s also an important aspect of having the yoga here.”

“They are with other women that look like them,

that they know and trust,” said Banda. “And that has been a really positive experience.”

The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day — whether from sodas and candies, cookies or other baked goods, or seemingly healthier foods like yogurt and granola. At this rate, that’s 57 pounds of added sugar a year.

The problem with consuming added sugar? It isn’t just that it offers no nutrients and plenty of calories (for example, one 20-ounce sports drink contains 122 calories of added sugar). Consuming too much sugar can also lead to serious health problems including obesity, diabetes, certain cancers, and even heart disease.

Health Matters spoke with Dr. Rekha B. Kumar, an attending endocrinologist at NewYork-Presbyterian and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, about how sugar consumption affects your health — and how much is too much.

What does the latest research show

Insulin is responsible for the body’s absorption of glucose — or sugar — for energy. Those with insulin resistance experience a buildup of glucose in the blood. Soon the body does not respond to insulin as well, and the sugar level in the blood stays higher, which leads to diabetes. Over time, diabetes can lead to nerve damage, vision loss, clogged veins and arteries — perhaps leading to amputations — and kidney failure.

What other conditions has consuming excess sugar been linked to?

Consuming excess sugar has been associated with cirrhosis, neuropathy, kidney disease, general inflammation, and cancer. In fact, there are several cancer links, such as breast, colon, and endometrial, that are associated with obesity, which might indirectly feed off of sugar in the diet; some tumor cells can use sugar and insulin as fuel to grow.

How does your body process the sugar in a soda or candy bar?

And how is that different than how it processes the sugar in fruit?

Both fructose, which occurs naturally in fruit, and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a sweetener used in soda and candy, are

called disaccharides and are broken down into monosaccharides, a more

usable form of sugar by the body. The amount of fructose from

HFCS allows a large amount of

Can sugar cause other problems like headaches?

Eating too much simple sugar may lead to headaches in certain individuals due to how rapidly simple or processed sugars are absorbed, leading to a rapid spike in blood sugar and then a rapid decline. This erratic blood sugar pattern can cause headaches, as opposed to consuming the sugar in complex carbohydrates, which are absorbed more slowly.

What about skin breakouts?High blood sugar, high insulin levels, and

alterations in hormones like testosterone, caused by eating too much sugar, can lead to acne.

How much sugar is OK to consume on a daily basis?

The American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons (25

SUGAR from p14 grams) of added sugar per day for women and 9 teaspoons (38 grams) for men. Children between 2 and 18 years old should eat less than 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day.

Does eating too much sugar speed up the aging process?

One could argue that eating too much sugar leads to aging due to increased stress on cells. This is not the typical outward aging, such as getting gray hair and wrinkles, but it takes cells

a lot of work to metabolize sugar and this can cause “oxidative stress,” leading to free radicals, which are implicated in the aging process.

“Apple, when they bring their stores, they meet with the Community Board. But they do that from the beginning, and that’s how that is successful,” added Brewer, who maintained that failure to conduct the ULURP process for Amazon might have sealed its fate.

“A ULURP isn’t the end of the world,” she said. “I think it probably would have passed, because you would have had the input.”

Despite the city’s failed courtship of Amazon, Brewer noted that community colleges and workforce development groups, who were brought together to plan ways to conduct Amazon job training, would remain in collaboration in order to bolster tech job training across the city and diversify the workforce.

“We’ll have the community colleges continue to come together, along with workforce development folks, to figure out for the future what it is that they need,” she said. “The industry is not diverse. It’s not diverse for women, and it’s not diverse for people of color.”

Fernandez said that agents are not permitted to enter private areas such as back offices of businesses without proper documentation.

“No agent can enter a private area of business without a judicial warrant,” said Fernandez.

Last year, the federal government increased the frequency of immigration arrests in the workplace. A sweeping five-day ICE operation in April 2018 produced more than 200 arrests at businesses across New York City, according to ICE, which dubbed the effort Operation Keep Safe.

In June 2018, an ICE raid on a meat packing plant in Tennessee resulted in 143 arrests, most of them Guatemalan immigrants.

Fernández said that NMCIR has been contacted by several local businesses about ICE visits to their location, including one Washington Heights business that reported an ICE arrest on their premises.

Agents from ICE may also visit a business to perform an I-9 audit, to check if the employer has followed rules for maintaining Form I-9, which confirms a worker’s identity and authorization to work in the U.S.

If any irregularities are found, the employer has 10 days to correct it and ensure

the documentation is up to date.“The most important thing is that you

have rights,” she said.Employers are required to keep I-9s

on file for at least three years from the date of hiring the employee to one year after an employee leaves your business, whichever is later. While Form I-9 is not filed with a government agency, it must be available for inspection.

Businesses not in compliance are subject to fines.

Chamber of Commerce President Sandra Harris said the Chamber is planning to hold “Immigration On Your Corner” events in the coming months to make small business owners aware of how to handle visits from ICE. The meetings will allow local business to share stories of their own experiences.

“We are not serving the business community unless we can help keep them informed,” Harris said.

Eighth grader William Castillo, who arrived in the United States from Honduras a few years ago, said he related to Delgado.

“It inspired me. When I came here, I didn’t speak English at all,” he said. “I didn’t even think I’d pass fifth grade. But I kept trying and I did it.”

Also included in the show is a timeline of events leading up to the final passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote on August 26, 2019.

The show’s title is taken from a quote by Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell. When Senator Elizabeth Warren vociferously objected to Jeff Sessions becoming the next U.S. Attorney General in 2017, she was cut off on the Senate floor by McConnell. After Sessions’ confirmation, McConnell said, “Senator Warren was giving a lengthy speech. She had appeared

ENDURANCE from p3 to violate the rule. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

McConnell’s words ran away from him, and became viral. They were adopted by feminists the world over. “Nevertheless she persisted,” became a meme, printed on t-shirts, posters, tattoos proclaiming women’s age-old tenacity and resolve.

In July 2017, New York State was the first to make legal representation available to every detained immigrant facing deportation. The LDP and the NYIFUP have handled approximately 1,100 cases since then, primarily at the Batavia and Ulster Immigration Courts. In Batavia, the successful partnership resulted in the release of more than one third of clients between July 2017 and June 2018.

Additionally, immigrants throughout New York State can use LDP’s free legal consultations and screenings. LPD offers representation in deportation proceedings as well as other cases. It also provides help with filing immigration applications for naturalization, employment authorization and permanent residency.
