In July, 2015, Rochester Institute of Technology announced the Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach, the university’s first endowed coaching position for Tiger athletic programs.

RIT Trustee Emeritus Bruce B. Bates, who joined the board in 1970, is providing the gift where endowed earnings support the salary of the women’s head hockey coach and provide budget relief to athletics.

“The women’s team deserves this endowment and recognition for their program,” said Bates, who began playing hockey at age 8 and retired from men’s leagues at 58. “These young women are exceptional student-athletes both in the class-room and on the ice. I am a season ticket holder and enjoy their brand of hockey. This feels good to me. It’s the right place to start for an endowed coaching position.”

The endowment in athletics is similar to those in academics at RIT. The donation is invested, and a portion of the return is distributed each year. When funded, the endowment will include commitments of more than $1.7 million.

Scott McDonald, who signed a 5-year exten-sion to lead the women’s hockey team through 2020, is the first recipient of the endowment.

“I would like to thank Mr. Bates for his support and most of all, his generosity for our program and RIT Athletics,” said McDonald, the Bruce

B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach. “This is a monumental step for our program. Not only will this benefit our team, but our entire athletics department. I am honored and humbled that Mr. Bates feels that we have earned this generous gift.”

In 11 seasons as head coach at RIT, McDonald has an overall record of 201-126-26, including the 2012 Division III National Championship. In four seasons as a Division I program, he has led RIT

to two College Hockey America Championships, and in 2015, RIT’s first berth into the NCAA Division I Tournament.

“Bruce Bates’ extraordinary generosity and engagement will have a profound impact on the entire Intercollegiate Athletics program at RIT,” said Sandra Johnson, senior vice president for Student Affairs. “This ‘first’ in our history will sup-port and advance the important role of promoting women in sports and the concept of the scholar athlete. Bruce’s engagement with the program will inspire and energize our community in meaning-ful and remarkable ways today and in the future.”

“We are thrilled for our women’s hockey program and for athletics at RIT in general,” added Lou Spiotti Jr., executive director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “This is a landmark event in that it will serve as an impetus for future successes in women’s hockey. We look forward to benefiting from the added financial support, which is obviously critical to building consistently competitive teams. We are grateful for Mr. Bates’ generosity and extraordi-nary dedication to our student-athletes.”

Lisa Cauda, vice president of Development and Alumni Relations, said the Bates gift is a model for RIT Athletics that may inspire others to support RIT’s other 23 varsity sports.

“As the first RIT donor to establish an endowed coaching position, Mr. Bates is paving a new roadway toward further athletic successes,” said Cauda. “We look forward to helping other dedicated alumni and friends to follow his lead, all in support of our Tiger scholar athletes.”

Bates, a longtime supporter of RIT, said his recent gift is about an emotional connection to the women’s team. He hopes more donors follow suit for other RIT coaches.

“I got involved in a lot of different ways over the years with RIT,” said Bates. “After a while, you get to love a place that tends to think you are OK and gives you opportunities to love them back.”

Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach

Scott McDonald, the program’s all-time leader in coaching wins, begins his 12th season as the Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach at RIT in 2017-18, and sixth at the Division I level. In his tenure, McDonald has transformed the Tigers into one of the most successful and respected teams in all of college hockey.

On Jan. 28, 2017, McDonald won his 200th game behind the bench in a shutout victory over Lindenwood. He helped lead the Tigers to the College Hockey America Semifinals last season. In the classroom, 17 players earned CHA All-Academic Team honors. Caitlin Wallace was the 2017 CHA Individual Sportsperson of the Year, while Mackenzie Stone was the Defensive Forward of the Year.

In 2015, McDonald signed a five-year contract extension through the 2019-20 season. That summer, McDonald became the Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach, the university’s first endowed coaching position for Tiger athletic programs.

The Tigers made history in just their second season as a Division I program in 2013-14 season, winning the CHA Championship in double overtime against Mercyhurst University, which advanced to the 2014 Frozen Four. RIT won its final seven games and finished with a 20-15-3 mark. In 2014-15, RIT moved into the 4,300-seat Gene Polisseni Center and won the College Hockey America Championship for the second straight season, emerging as the No. 6 seed to knock off the top three teams and advance to the NCAA Tour-nament for the first time as a Division I program.

On March 17, 2012, RIT defeated Norwich 4-1 to claim its first NCAA Division III Championship in its final season at that level. The Tigers opened and ended the year with two 14-game winning streaks and were the No. 1 team in the na-tion for 18 weeks during the season, finishing with an NCAA record 28 wins (28-1-1).

Three days later, RIT announced its intention to move to the Division I level. McDonald and the Tigers made a suc-cessful transition to the Division I ranks in 2012-13, as the team finished 16-16-5 and advanced to the College Hockey America Semifinals. RIT recorded wins over established programs Robert Morris, Yale, and Brown in its first Division I year.

In 11 seasons as head coach at RIT, McDonald has compiled an overall record of 201-126-26. He is among Division III’s all-time leaders with a .835 winning percentage and is RIT’s all-time leader in coaching victories, earning his 100th win at RIT on Jan. 29, 2011, vs. Buffalo State. He became the second fastest coach in Division III history to reach that milestone (128 games).

In 2010-11, the Tigers opened the season by winning their first 17 games and were unbeaten in 23 straight games before winning their first ECAC West Championship. In addition, RIT made its first trip to the NCAA Division III National Championship game and boasted the program’s first No. 1 national ranking. RIT finished 26-2-2 and boasted three All-Americans, including three-time selection Sarah Dagg, the Laura Hurd National Player of the Year.

McDonald, the 2009 and 2011 ECAC West Coach of the Year, has led the Tigers to one NCAA Division I Tournament appearance, three NCAA Division III Tournament berths, two ECAC West Championships, and two CHA titles. The Tigers won at least 19 games in each of his first six seasons behind the bench and have won at least 20 games five times. He has

coached nine different AHCA All-Americans, 36 All-ECAC West selections, seven All-CHA picks, and three consecutive Rochester Press Radio Club Paychex Local Female College Athletes of the Year (Katie Stack, 2009; Dagg, 2010; and Kris-tina Moss, 2011).

Under McDonald’s tutelage, the Tigers not only have excelled on the ice and in the classroom, but have become active mem-bers in the community. The Tigers have participated in several fundraising initiatives for organizations such as Black Out Heart Disease, CURE Childhood Cancer, Autism Up, “One Team One Fight,” the Testicular Cancer Foundation of Western New York, and “Do It For Daron.” RIT was honored by the NCAA for its excellent Academic Progress Rate (APR), as it received a Public Recognition Award for the second straight year in 2016.

McDonald’s first year (2006-07) was a landmark season in RIT women’s hockey history, as the Tigers made the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time and set a school record for wins in a season (22).

McDonald led the Tigers to a 21-3-2 record in 2008-09; they were ranked second nationally. He was named the ECAC West Co-Coach of the Year.

McDonald led the Western team to the Gold Medal at the 2010 Empire State Games.

A 2000 graduate of Niagara University, McDonald played defense for the Purple Eagles from 1996-2000. He was part of the school’s inaugural freshman and first graduating classes as a Division I program. During his senior year, he helped Niagara, in only its fourth season, to an NCAA Tournament at-large bid, beating the University of New Hampshire in the northeast regional. He also helped Niagara to an undefeated season in the College Hockey America conference (15-0-2, 30-8-4 overall), as well as the CHA regular-season and tourna-ment championships.

McDonald later served as an assistant at Utica College for one season before moving to RIT to serve as the assistant coach for the men’s hockey program from 2003-06. He put forth an outstanding effort in recruiting talented student-athletes as the Tigers made the leap to Division I in 2005.

McDonald, a native of Oakville, Ontario, is the only person in NCAA history to play at the Division I and III levels, and coach at both divisions on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Professionally, McDonald played and coached in Hagfors, Sweden, for the IK Viking Ishockeyklubb. Prior to that, he played with the San Angelo (Texas) Outlaws of the Western Professional Hockey League.

McDonald earned a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from Niagara University in 2000. A native of Oakville, Ontario, McDonald lives in Victor, with his wife, Christina, and daughters, Summer and Sienna.

In his first season, Madolora helped lead the Tigers to the College Hockey America Semifinals and mentored goaltenders Jenna de Jonge and Terra Lanteigne, who both earned CHA weekly honors. Originally from Salinas, Calif., Madolora played three seasons for the Tigers from 2009-2012, recording a bevy of individual honors, while setting RIT records with a 1.98 goals against average, a .932 save percentage, and 13 shutouts. 2017-18 Season Preview

After advancing to the College Hockey America Semifinals a year ago, the RIT women’s hockey team has high hopes in returning to the top of the league standings in 2017-18. The Tigers are looking for their third CHA Championship since joining in 2012-13.

Despite having just two seniors on the roster, RIT returns 17 players from last season’s squad, while adding eight highly touted newcomers. The Tigers boast versatility and strong depth, which will be key during the grueling season.

“We’re excited to get the season started and like the direction that we’re headed in,” said Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach Scott McDonald, who enters his 12th season. “The team is eager to get back to its winning ways and understand we have to work harder on and train harder off the ice.”

The Tigers open the regular season at The Col-lege of Holy Cross on Oct. 6-7 before playing six straight games at the Gene Polisseni Center. On Oct. 13-14, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of the ECAC invades Rochester for Brick City Home-coming & Family Weekend, while Yale University is in town on Oct. 20-21. RIT heads to Boston University for two games on Nov. 3-4 and goes to Vermont University on Nov. 24-25 for the Windjammer Classic. The Tigers close out non-conference play with consecutive road series at Bemidji State University of the WCHA on Dec. 8-9 and Union College on Dec. 15-16.

RIT plays 20 games against conference foes, starting with two home games against Lindenwood University on Oct. 27-28 and ending with its final 12 regular-season contests to begin 2018. With six teams in the league this season, the Tigers will play four games against Syracuse, Mercyhurst, Penn State, Robert Morris, and Lindenwood. The CHA Tournament First Round, Semifinals and Championship will be held on March 1-3 at the HARBORCENTER in downtown Buffalo.

“We like to play a hard non-conference schedule, which will help prepare us for an even tougher CHA schedule,” said McDonald. “For many of our newcomers, it was good to get their first postseason win last season. It was nice to make the CHA Semifinals (last season), but we now want to take the next step and not only make the CHA Championship game and win the title.”

Four first-time captains will lead the squad on and off the ice in 2017-18. Senior Lauren Carroll and junior Kendall Cornine will serve as captains, while juniors Mallory Rushton and Christa Vuglar are assistant captains.

Carroll, a stay-at-home defenseman, is well respected in the locker room. Cornine led the way offensively last season for the Tigers with 12 goals and 20 points, 129 shots on goal, 332 face-off wins, four power-play goals and a pair of game-winners. Rushton, who can play forward

and defense, led the Tigers with 46 penalty minutes and blocked 38 shots in 2016-17. Vuglar, a defenseman, returned to the lineup in 2016-17 after missing all of the 2015-16 season due to injury, playing in 28 games and was third on the team with 49 blocked shots.

“We like the leadership that our four new captains have brought to the team, on the ice, in the locker room and in the weight room,” said McDonald, who enters the 2017-18 season as RIT’s all-time leader with 201 wins.

In addition to Cornine up front, senior Darcy Henderson, along with juniors Logan Land, Brooke Baker, Kandice Sheriff, and Kathryn Kennedy will look to enjoy breakout seasons. Sophomores Claudia Black, Tori Haywood, Madison Farrand, and Jade Mancini earned valuable experience last season and will all be counted on to take on a greater role.

McDonald has brought in a talented group of newcomers, as Brittney Gout, Stella Haberman, Kaleyn Johnson, Jordan Marchese, and Baylee Trani are a dynamic group who will look to compete for playing time right away.

“From a forward standpoint, we have a lot of depth,” said McDonald. “There are a lot of new faces up front who can add scoring, which we have lacked over the last few years, which will be fun to watch. We expect Kendall (Cornine) to lead the way and improve off a very good sophomore year.”

Carroll, Vuglar, and Rushton, along with junior Brinna Dochniak and sophomore Taylor Baker, return to lead the defensive unit. All five played at least 30 contests last season, as Baker led the

team with 60 blocked shots.First-year defenders Katie Carlson and Ellie

Larson will look to crack the lineup and help the experienced unit. Land and Haberman may also see time on the back end as well in various situations.

“Overall, I like where we are defensively, but want to add more of an offensive component from our blueline, which we have gotten away from. We have some versatility that will allow for good competition.”

In net, junior Jenna de Jonge, sophomore Terra Lanteigne, and freshman Jessi O’Leary will all battle for the starting nod.

De Jonge showed flashes of brilliance during the 2016-17 season, leading the team with four wins, while recording a 2.88 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. Lanteigne was named to the College Hockey America All-Rookie Team last season after leading all RIT goaltenders with 20 games played, a 2.72 goals against average and a .918 save percentage to go along with a pair of shutouts. She was strong in CHA play, finishing among the league leaders with a 2.29 goals against average and a .930 save percentage. O’Leary was a member of Team New Brunswick in Canada.

“I am excited to see all three goalies compete for the starting nod,” said McDonald. “All three are capable of starting and regardless of class year, the goalie who gives us the best chance to win will earn the most playing time.”

The places are in piece for the Tigers to make a run toward a CHA title and earn their second NCAA Division I Tournament berth.

2016-17 Season in Review

The Tigers advanced to the College Hockey America Semifinal for the fourth time in five seasons during the 2016-17 season. After qualifying for the CHA Postseason Tournament as the No. 5 seed, RIT knocked off No. 4 seed Penn State in the first round, as senior captain Taylor Thurston and assistant captain Cassie Clayton scored third period goals, as the Tigers rallied to win, 2-1. On Oct. 27, RIT said hello to an old friend, playing Penn State at its former home, Ritter Arena, as part of a Throwback Thursday game. On Jan. 28, Bruce B. Bates Women’s Hockey Coach Scott McDonald won his 200th game at the university. Up front, sophomore forward Kendall Cornine led the way offensively with 12 goals and 20 assists in 34 games. In addition, she led the Tigers with 129 shots on goal, 332 face-offs won, four power-play goals, and two game-winners. In league play, she led RIT with nine goals and 14 points. Senior Caitlin Wallace enjoyed a breakout season, setting career-highs with eight goals, eight assists, and 16 points and was named the CHA Individual Sports-woman of the Year. Wallace had four multiple-point games in a five-game stretch in January. Thurston, along with assistant captains Mackenzie Stone and Clayton led the Tigers on and off the ice in 2016-17. Thurston, one of just seven three-year captains in program history, was a mainstay on the defensive unit, recording nine points on two goals and seven assists. Stone, who returned to the lineup after missing virtually the entire 2015-16 due to injury, added eight points on three goals and five assists in 30 games. In addition, Stone was named the CHA Defensive Forward of the Year. Clayton tallied five goals, including the game-winner in CHA first round win over Penn State. First-year forwards Claudia Black, Tori Haywood, Madison Farrand and Jade Mancini earned valuable experience as the season progressed. Black led all first-year forwards with seven points, Junior Darcy Hender-son, along with sophomores Kandice Sheriff, Brooke Baker and Kathryn Kennedy added depth. On defense, Thurston and Reagan Rust formed RIT’s top pair. Rust came on later in the season to lead all RIT defensemen with 14 points on three goals, while block-ing 54 shots. Senior Lindsay Stenason appeared in 34 contests, primarily on defense, recording seven assists. Sophomores Mallory Rushton, Christa Vuglar, and Brinna Dochniak, along with junior Lauren Carroll and freshman Taylor Baker all contributed on the defensive unit, playing at least 30 contests. Baker led the team with 60 blocked shots. All three RIT goaltenders saw action in 2016-17. Senior Brooke Stoddart battled injuries and made a handful starts. Freshman Terra Lanteigne was named to the College Hockey America All-Rookie Team after leading all RIT goaltenders with 20 games played, a 2.72 goals against average and a .918 save percentage to go along with a pair of shutouts. Sophomore Jenna de Jonge showed flashes of brilliance during the season, leading the team with four wins, while recording a 2.88 goals against average and a .913 save percentage. de Jonge recorded back-to-back 26 save shutouts against Lindenwood on Jan. 27-28, 2017.

College Hockey America at a Glance

College Hockey America (CHA), an NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey conference, formed in the fall of 2002 with four teams. The original members included three teams from the former Great Lakes Women’s Hockey Association—Find-lay, Mercyhurst and Wayne State—and Niagara, who previously played in the ECAC.

In the league’s first year of competition, 2002-03, each member played two games against each of the other conference schools. Mercyhurst won the regular-season title with a 6-0 record. The Lakers continued on to win the first-ever CHA postseason tournament, held at the City Sports Center Arena in Detroit, with victories over Wayne State and Findlay.

The league has seen several changes in membership since 2002. Mercyhurst is the only remaining original member. Findlay dropped women’s ice hockey after the 2003-04 season, only to be replaced by Quinnipiac, which played the previous season as a Division I independent. The Bobcats played one year in CHA before joining their men’s team in the ECAC. Robert Morris replaced Quinnipiac prior to the 2005-06 season to keep membership at four. Syracuse was added as a fifth member for the 2008-09 season, and the league schedule increased to 16 games, four head-to-head games against each of the other members.

In that season, the conference tournament also expanded to a three-day event for the first time in league history. The league dropped back to four members when Wayne State dropped women’s hockey prior to the 2010-11 season. New commis-sioner Robert DeGregorio oversaw another period of transition, ushering in three new members,

Lindenwood, Penn State and RIT, for the start of the 2012-13 season. Niagara dropped women’s ice hockey during the same offseason, leaving the league with its six current members.cham-pionship, sending the Crusaders to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program’s, and the league’s, history.

Mercyhurst has been the benchmark of College Hockey America since the inaugural season, winning 14 of 16 regular-season titles outright, including 2015-16.

The Lakers have also won 12 of 15 post season tournaments. The 2012 CHA Champion-ship was hosted by the number two seed Robert Morris. Prior to 2013, the tournament site was predetermined, not awarded to the regular-season championship. The Colonials made the most of their home ice advantage, winning their first-ever league title by shocking the top-seeded Lakers 3-2, and ending Mercyhurst’s run of nine-straight league championships.

RIT has enjoyed CHA Championship play, having won two of the last three tournaments. In just its second DI season in 2013-14, RIT knocked off second-seed Robert Morris in the quarterfinals, and toppled the Lakers in the championship game, 2-1, in double overtime. Goaltender Ali Binning-ton made 62 saves in the title game, and earned Tournament MVP honors.

In 2014-15, RIT duplicated its success at Mer-cyhurst, despite entering as the No. 6 seed. The Tigers knocked off the top-seeded Lakers 4-1 in the semifinals before Carly Payerl scored in double overtime to defeat Syracuse 2-1 in the champion-

ship, earning the first NCAA Division I automatic bid. Binnington was named Tournament MVP for the second straight year.

Last year, Robert Morris won the league cham-pionship at the HARBORCENTER in downtown Buffalo.

This season, the CHA First Round, Semi - final, and Championship will be played at the HARBORCENTER on March 1-3, 2018. The first-round games will be played on March 1, semifinals the next day and championship on March 3.

Success in the classroom is as important as success on the ice among the member institutions of College Hockey America. A total of 99 student-athletes (17 from RIT) were named to the 2016-17 CHA All-Academic squad in recognition of their outstanding scholastic achievement. CHA athletes have also contributed time off the ice to numerous charitable organizations as a way of saying thanks to their many supporters.

Goaltender Ali Binnington made 62 saves on 63 shots and was named the CHA Tournament MVP. Despite winning the league title, RIT was not eligible for the NCAA Tournament due to a two-year probationary period moving up from Division III to Division I.

In 2014-15, the Tigers entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed and started its run by sweeping Robert Morris in the CHA First Round. It was back to the Mercyhurst Ice Center and a date with the top seeded Lakers in the semifinals. For the second straight season, RIT emerged victorious, bottling up the Lakers high-powered offense in a 4-1 win. The next day, Carly Payerl scored early in the second overtime to send the Tigers to their second straight CHA Championship, 2-1 over Syracuse. Binnington stopped 44 shots and was named Tournament MVP for the second straight season. The Tigers earned the league’s first autobid into the NCAA Tournament and gave top-seed and eventual national champion Minnesota a good battle before falling, 6-2.
