Year 3 Summer Term – Chestnut & Cherry Class Each half term we take a different focus for our learning. This term our topic is ‘Who’s In Charge?’ focussing on animals and plants in the first half term and on different Kings and Queens through time in the second half term. If your child would like to research any of the following areas please encourage them to do so. We would love to see any research that they do! Week Learning Links 1 – 20.04.2015 The first week back after the Easter break will be a Superhero themed literacy week! We will be writing character profiles for the S.t Augustine’s Team L superheroes in Literacy. In Numeracy we will be designing out own symmetrical superhero logos. Using ICT, we will be creating a comic strip to show how our school got its heroes. 2 – 27.04.2015 For Science, we will be researching to find out what humans and animals need to survive and comparing the basic needs of different animals. In Art we will be doing pencil drawings of animals to sketch food chains in groups. Our Literacy work will use our new knowledge on animals and their needs for survival to explore and write poetry. Numeracy this week will be focussed on 2D and 3D shapes. From this week on up until the end of this half term, our R.E learning will be about Islam. 3 – 04.05.2015 Following on from learning about the needs of animals, this week’s Science work will be based on food chains including how plants fit into food chains. In Geography we will be thinking about how we fit into food chains and where our food comes from, each child will be asked to bring a food item or wrapper in from home with a label on and we will use our map work skills to identify its country of origin. Our Numeracy and ICT work this week will link together as we will be collecting and presenting data about wildlife in a variety of different graphical ways. Literacy work, which will continue over the next two weeks, is still poetry work where we will be looking more closely at alliteration and how to play with language for effect. 4 – 11.05.2015 Over the next two weeks, our Geography work will be comparing our produce with another countries produce. Looking at exotic fruits and researching what factors stop us from growing certain things, for example weather, climates and the space needed. This will lend itself well to our Science learning where we will be exploring the requirements of plants for life and growth and how this varies in different plant species. In Numeracy we will be calculating with metric measures involving length, which will help us with our art work. Art for the next two weeks will involve us designing our own flower garden using the Chelsea Flower Show for inspiration. 5 – In Science we will be continuing with our exploration of the requirements of plants for life and

1 20.04.2015The first week back after the Easter break will be a Superhero themed literacy week! We will be writing character profiles for the S.t Augustines Team L superheroes in Literacy. In Numeracy we will be designing out own symmetrical superhero logos. Using ICT, we will be creating a comic strip to show how our school got its heroes.

2 27.04.2015For Science, we will be researching to find out what humans and animals need to survive and comparing the basic needs of different animals.

3 04.05.2015Following on from learning about the needs of animals, this weeks Science work will be based on food chains including how plants fit into food chains. In Geography we will be thinking about how we fit into food chains and where our food comes from, each child will be asked to bring a food item or wrapper in from home with a label on and we will use our map work skills to identify its country of origin. 4 11.05.2015Over the next two weeks, our Geography work will be comparing our produce with another countries produce.

5 18.05.2015In Science we will be continuing with our exploration of the requirements of plants for life and growth. We will be conducting an experiment to see how much water plants need when they are grown in different conditions. To help us do this, in Numeracy we will be learning about calculating with metric measures with regards to mass and volume. Our Literacy work this week will be writing Calligrams, this is when the poem is in the shape of the object you are writing about, we will be using the Wildlife Garden as inspiration for this.

HALF-TERM

6 01.05.15After half term we will continue looking at plants in Science, in particular naming and explaining the different parts of a plant. We will be looking at stories with familiar settings in Literacy for the next two weeks. In Numeracy will be recapping methods of addition. Our main focus of this half term is British history and we will be looking at significant time periods. In Art we will begin looking at Vincent Van Gogh and his famous work on sunflowers. In R.E we will be looking at Hinduism for the next three weeks.

7 08.05.15We will continue our work about British history with a study into Roman Britain, focussing on Julius Caesar. Linked to this, in Maths we will be learning about Roman Numerals. Our Science work will continue with parts of a plant where we investigate what each part of the plant does.

8 15.05.15In Literacy, our stories theme will look at adventure and mystery. This ties in well with our History focus when we look at the Viking Age, William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings. In Numeracy we will be recapping subtraction methods. In Science, we will be moving onto exploring the life cycles of plants for the next two weeks.

9 22.05.15In History, we will be looking at the Tudors and King Henry VIII. This will link to our R.E work over the next three weeks when we investigate what impact Henry VIII had on religion in England. In Literacy we will be studying play scripts for the next two weeks and in art we will begin work on portraits of Kings and Queens which will last us until the end of term. In Numeracy we will be recapping calculating using multiplication and problem solving.

10 29.05.15In Science, we will move onto looking at how water is transported in plants and investigating this process over two weeks. We will be studying the Victorians in our British History topic, researching how Queen Victoria made England so powerful. In Numeracy we will be recapping the different division techniques.

11 06.06.15In our final week together, we will be looking at present day Britain and the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. In Literacy we will be using our knowledge about Kings and Queens throughout our history to write instructions on how to rule! In Numeracy we will revisit fractions.

We will use ICT throughout our learning and specifically use Google, internet search engines and graph making programmes. In the second half term, we will be using a coding programme called Scratch. Our topics in P.E for the first half term are gymnastics and athletics and in the second half term, Fundamental multi-skills and striking and fielding games. Our R.E will mainly focus on Islam and Hinduism, in particular on their beliefs and buildings. Our trip in the first half term is to Clumber Walled Gardens on the 08.05.15. We would welcome any adult helpers to come with us!
