    CRUISING LIMITATIONSEJX24011

8 Do not jump boat wakes or followanother boat or watercraft too closely. You increase your risk of colliding withanother boat, which could result insevere injury or death. Do not jumpwaves, wakes, or any objects. You risksevere impact injuries. Jumping canalso cause damage to the water vehicle.

    EJX25010

8 Do not operate the vehicle in roughwater, bad weather or when visibility ispoor; this may lead to an accident caus-ing injury or death. Be alert to the possi-bility of adverse weather. Take note of weather forecasts and the prevailingweather conditions before setting outon your water vehicle.

    EJX23010

8 As with any water sport, you should notride your water vehicle without some-one else near by. If you ride further thanswimming distance from shore, youshould be accompanied by anotherboat or watercraft. Its good, commonsense!

    OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTSEJX16010

8 Operating your water vehicle requiresskills acquired only through practiceover a period of time. Take the time tolearn the basic operating techniqueswell, before attempting more difficultmaneuvers.

8 Both operator and passengers mustalways wear a U.S. Coast Guardapproved personal flotation device(vest-type) because of the drowninghazards associated with water sports.

    1 U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flota-tion device

2 Wetsuit 3 Water shoes4 Gloves5 Eye protection8 Strong streams of water from the jet

nozzle, or impact with the water surfacecan be dangerous. Both operator andpassengers must wear wetsuits. Nor-mal swimming attire may not adequate-ly protect you. A wetsuit will help pro-tect against internal injuries to orifices(rectum and vagina) from strong jetstreams, and from impact with thewater surface. Wetsuits also help pro-

tect against hypothermia (low bodytemperature) and abrasions.

    EJX11810

8 Both operator and passengers shouldwear water shoes to help protect feetfrom objects hidden under water. Wear-ing gloves can also help protect handsfrom abrasions.

    EJX11911

8 Wind, water, and glare from the sunmay get in your eyes while you operateyour water vehicle, reducing your abili-ty to see. You may want to considerwearing eye protection such as sun-glasses or goggles while riding. Somemay find, however, that eye protectionobstructs or distorts their vision, anddistracts from operation. Only youknow the circumstances in which youoperate your water vehicle, so only youcan decide if the benefits of eye protec-tion outweigh the potential hazards.

    EJX11920

8 If you wear prescription lenses, consid-er measures to secure them against

loss while riding. For example, somegoggles are designed to be worn overglasses or contact lenses. Restrainingstraps for glasses are also made whichare designed to float if your glassesshould fall in the water.

    EJX12110

8 Helmets meeting Snell or DOT stan-dards are required for IJSBA-sanctionedraces. You must decide whether towear a helmet while you ride recre-ationally. A helmet could help protectyou in certain kinds of accidents. Youshould also know that a helmet couldinjure you in some other riding condi-tions.A helmet is designed to provide somehead protection. Although helmets can-not protect against all foreseeableimpacts, a helmet might reduce yourinjuries in a collision with a boat orother obstacles.

A helmet may have potential safety haz-ards, as well. A helmet could catch thewater during a fall into the water. Thisis commonly called bucketing. Theresulting strain on your neck couldcause choking, severe and permanentneck injuries, or death. A helmet couldalso increase the risk of an accident if itreduces your vision or hearing, or if itdistracts you or increases your fatigue. How should you decide if a helmetspotential safety benefits outweigh itspotential risks for you? Consider yourparticular riding conditions. Considerfactors such as your riding environmentand your riding style and ability. Alsoconsider the likelihood of traffic conges-tion, and the water surface conditions. If you decide to wear a helmet basedupon your riding circumstances, chooseone carefully. Look for a helmetdesigned for personal watercraft use, if possible. Consider a helmet meetingSnell or DOT standards. If you will beengaging in closed-course competition, follow the helmet requirements of thesanctioning organization.

8 NEVER ride the vehicle after consumingalcohol or taking drugs.

8 For reasons of safety and proper care, always perform the pre-operationchecks on page 3-3 before riding.

8 The operator and passengers shouldalways keep both feet on the footrestfloor when the vehicle is in motion. If you lift your feet, you increase yourchances of losing your balance, andyour feet could hit objects outside thewater vehicle. Do not give a ride to achild whose feet cannot reach thefootrest floor.Passengers should firmly hold on-eitherto the person in front of them or to thehandgrips provided.

8 If you are pregnant or in poor health, ask your doctors advice on whether itis safe for you to ride this water vehicle.

8 Do not attempt to modify this watervehicle!Modifications to your machine mayreduce safety and reliability, and may

make the vehicle unsafe or illegal for use.8 The operator should always attach the

engine stop switch lanyard (cable) tohis left wrist so that the engine will stopif the operator falls off.Be sure the lanyard is not wrappedaround the handlebar or tangled in thecontrols which would prevent the lan-yard from pulling away.

    WATER VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS

8 Jet thrust turns the water vehicle. If youare going faster than trolling speeds(the lowest maneuvering speed), youmust use throttle to turn. If you releasethe throttle completely, you cannotturn-even if you turn the handlebars.Practice turning in an open area withoutobstructions until you have a good feelfor this maneuver.

    EJX31010

8 Yamaha Water Vehicles are water-jetpropelled. The jet pump is directly con-nected to the engine. This means thatjet thrust will produce some vehiclemovement whenever the engine is run-ning. There is no neutral position.

    EJX35010

8 Boats, including your water vehicle, donot have brakes. Release the throttle or

stop the engine to slow down. Remem-ber, however, that you have no steeringcontrol without throttle.

8 Keep hands, feet, hair, and all otherparts of your body and clothing awayfrom jet intake on the bottom of the hullwhile engine is running because theycould be caught in the intake.Stop the engine and remove the lockplate from the engine stop lanyardswitch before removing any debris orweeds which may have collectedaround the jet intake.Never insert any object in the jet pumpoutlet. RULES OF THE ROAD

Your Yamaha water vehicle is legally con-sidered a power boat. Operation of thewater vehicle must be in accordance withthe rules and regulations governing thewaterway on which it is used.

Just as there are rules which apply whenyou are driving on streets and highways, there are waterway rules which applywhen you are riding your water vehicle. These rules are used internationally, andare also enforced by the United StatesCoast Guard and local agencies. Youshould be aware of these rules, and fol-low them whenever you encounter anoth-er vessel on the water.

Several sets of rules prevail according togeographic location, but are all basicallythe same as the International Rules of theRoad. The rules presented here in yourOwners Manual are condensed, and havebeen provided for your convenience only.Consult your local U.S. Coast Guard Aux-iliary or Department of Motor Vehicles fora complete set of rules governing the

waters in which you will be riding yourwater vehicle.

wDo not operate water vehicle after sunsetor before dawn. It is not equipped withlighting required for night operation. Yourisk collision with another boat whichcould cause injury or death.

STEERING AND SAILING RULES ANDSOUND SIGNALSWhenever two vessels on the water meetone another, one vessel has the right-of-way; it is called the stand-on vessel. The vessel which does not have the right-of-way is called the give-way or bur-dened vessel. These rules determinewhich vessel has the right-of-way, andwhat each vessel should do.

Stand-On VesselThe vessel with the right-of-way has theduty to continue its course and speed, except to avoid an immediate collision. When you maintain your direction andspeed, the other vessel will be able todetermine how best to avoid you.

    Give-Way Vessel

The vessel which does not have the right-of-way has the duty to take positive andtimely action to stay out of the way of theStand-On vessel. Normally, you shouldnot cross in front of the vessel with theright-of-way. You should slow down orchange directions briefly and pass behindthe other vessel. You should always movein such a way that the operator of the

other vessel can see what you are doing.

The General Prudential RuleThis rule is called Rule 2 in the Interna-tional Rules and says,

In obeying and construing theserules due regard shall be had to alldangers of navigation and collision,

and to any special circumstances, which may render a departure fromthe above rules necessary in order toavoid immediate danger.

    E

In other words, follow the standard rulesexcept when a collision will occur unlessboth vessels try to avoid each other. If that is the case, both vessels becomeGive-Way vessels.

RULES WHEN ENCOUNTERINGVESSELSThere are three main situations which youmay encounter with other vessels whichcould lead to a collision unless the Steer-ing Rules are followed:

Meeting (you are approaching anothervessel head-on)Crossing (you are traveling across theother vessels path)Overtaking (you are passing or beingpassed by another vessel)

In the following illustration, your watervehicle is in the center. You should givethe right-of-way to any vessels shown inthe white area (you are the Give-Way ves-sel). Any vessels in the shaded area mustyield to you (they are the Give-Way ves-sels). Both you and the meeting vesselmust alter course to avoid each other.

MeetingIf you are meeting another power vesselhead on, and are close enough to run therisk of collision, neither of you has theright-of-way! Both of you should altercourse to avoid an accident. You shouldkeep the other vessel on your port (left)side. This rule doesnt apply if both of youwill clear one another if you continue onyour set course and speed.

CrossingWhen two power driven vessels arecrossing each others path close enoughto run the risk of collision, the vesselwhich has the other on the starboard(right) side must keep out of the way of the other. If the other vessel is on yourright, you must keep out of its way; youare the Give-Way vessel. If the other ves-

sel is on your port (left) side, rememberthat you should maintain course anddirection, provided the other vessel givesyou the right-of-way as it should.

You must stay outof its way until you are clear of it. Like-wise, if another vessel is passing you, youshould maintain your speed and directionso that the other vessel can steer itself around you.

OTHER SPECIAL SITUATIONSThere are three other rules you should beaware of when riding your water vehiclearound other vessels.

Narrow Channels and BendsWhen navigating in narrow channels, youshould keep to the right when it is safeand practical to do so. If the operator of a

power-driven vessel is preparing to goaround a bend that may obstruct the viewof other water vessels, the operatorshould sound a prolonged blast on thewhistle (4 to 6 seconds). If another vesselis around the bend, it too should soundthe whistle. Even if no reply is heard, however, the vessel should still proceedaround the bend with caution. If you navi-

gate such waters with your water vehicle, you will need to carry a portable air horn, available from local marine supply stores.

Fishing Vessel Right-of-WayAll vessels which are fishing with nets, lines or trawls are considered to be fish-ing vessels under the InternationalRules. Vessels with trolling lines are not

considered fishing vessels. Fishing ves-sels have the right-of-way regardless of position. Fishing vessels cannot, howev-er, impede the passage of other vessels innarrow channels.

Sailing Vessel Right-of-WaySailing vessels should normally be giventhe right-of-way. The exceptions to thisare:

    1. When the sailing vessel is overtakingthe power-driven vessel, the power-driven vessel has the right-of-way.

    2. Sailing vessels should keep clear of any fishing vessel.

    3. In a narrow channel, a sailing vesselshould not hamper the safe passageof a power-driven vessel which cannavigate only in such a channel.

Reading Buoys and Other MarkersThe waters of the United states aremarked for safe navigation by the lateralsystem of buoyage. Simply put, buoysand markers have an arrangement of shapes, colors, numbers and lights toshow which side of the buoy a boatershould pass on when navigating in a par-ticular direction. The markings on thesebuoys are oriented from the perspectiveof being entered from seaward (theboater is going towards the port). Thismeans that red buoys are passed on thestarboard (right) side when proceeding

from open water into port, and blackbuoys are to port (left) side. When navi-gating out of port, your position withrespect to the buoys should be reversed;red buoys should be to port and blackbuoys to starboard.

Many bodies of water used by boaters areentirely within the boundaries of a partic-

ular state. The Uniform State WaterwayMarking System has been devised forthese waters.

This system uses buoys and signs withdistinctive shapes and colors to show reg-ulatory or advisory information. Thesemarkers are white with black letters andorange boarders. They signify speedzones, restricted areas, danger areas, andgeneral information.

Remember, markings may vary by geo-graphic location. Always consult localboating authorities before riding yourwater vehicle in unfamiliar waters.

    ENJOY YOUR WATER VEHICLERESPONSIBLY

8 You share the areas you enjoy whenriding your Water Vehicle with othersand with nature. So your enjoymentincludes a responsibility to treat theseother people, and the lands, waters, andwildlife with respect and courtesy.

8 Whenever and wherever you ride, think

of yourself as the guest of those aroundyou. Remember, for example, that thesound of your Water Vehicle may bemusic to you, but it could be just noiseto others. And the exciting splash of your wake can make waves others wontenjoy. Avoid riding close to shorelinehomes and waterfowl nesting areas orother wildlife areas, and keep a respect-

ful distance from fishermen, otherboats, swimmers, and populated beach-es. When travel in areas like these isunavoidable, ride slowly and obey alllaws.

8 Remember that pollution can be harm-ful to the environment. Do not refuel oradd oil where a spill could cause dam-age to nature. Remove your Water

Vehicle from the water and move itaway from the shoreline before refuel-ing. And keep your surroundings pleas-ant for the people and wildlife thatshare the waterways: do not litter!
