What is it that makes a community a real community? The folks in Celo, a community in Yancey County, can answer that readily. Jeff Goodman, whose roots go back to a college internship, says, “People who physically build real bridges together also build bridges and relationships that make them a community.” He knows because that’s what happens in Celo, but what happens in Celo doesn’t need to stay in Celo. It has a rich history, which offers those of us who long for real community some ideas about how we can create that wherever we live.

Jeff first came to Celo in 1984 as an intern at the Arthur Morgan School for students in grades 7-9. The school, founded in 1962, is a progressive boarding and day school where students work, play, study and make decisions together. Students learn to question, evaluate, think creatively and work cooperatively while participating fully in the Celo community, which lives by the simple values of simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, stewardship and nonviolent conflict resolution. Jeff was taken with the educational program that fosters holistic development, small academic classes and electives that support hands-on learning, individual needs and creative self-expression. So taken, in fact, that after he graduated from college he returned to teach at AMS, living in the community nearby for several years. He and his wife officially joined the Celo community in 1994.

Jeff explains that Celo Community Incorporated (CCI) is a non-profit in which 60 members govern a 1200 acre land trust and the social community covers a much wider physical area including many people drawn to the rich cultural and physical environment found in Celo. In fact, this rich social community is the primary reason there is an extended community. The political community is made up of the 60 families that actually reside on the Celo property, which is a land trust founded in 1937 by Arthur Ernest Morgan. [Morgan believed the Great Depression represented a failure of the current industrial economic model. He wanted to promote an agrarian community that took the speculative value out of land ownership (can we say, Great Recession?).] As a land trust, the 1200 acres of Celo proper are governed by its own set of rules of taxation and land tenure and runs its internal government by consensus. It has no religious or ideological association but is based upon the ideals of cooperation and care for the natural environment.

One of the first significant groups of people to settle in the Celo area were conscientious objectors seeking a community after WWII. Gib Barrus, who runs Camp Celo, has roots in the community that go back to that group. His parents were among those who settled here in the 1950’s. With the support and encouragement of Ernest and Elizabeth Morgan, son and

daughter-in-law of the original founder, Gib’s parents took over Camp Celo from a family that moved. Gib and his family still run the camp, which serves lucky children ages 7 – 12 every summer. In keeping with the ideals of Celo, summer programs stress cooperation and teach appreciation of the natural world.

Gib shared his story with me as the butter churn whirred in the background. When he was growing up there were very few families with children and none who lived close by. So, from an early age he was surrounded with other children during the summer and quite solitary outside of school during the rest of the year. The early 60’s marked a low point in the community’s history. In fact, George Hicks wrote in his dissertation that Celo was a utopian experiment that seemed to be failing. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the late 60‘s and 70’s, with its focus on back-to-nature and peace, people were attracted to the community. Vacant houses were resurrected and the community came back to life. Except for a slight dip in the late 70’s - early 80’s, there has been gradual growth and they are at sustained capacity.

Now the community hosts many young families with lots of children and new babies being born every year. There are 60 households and approximately 80-100 people who live on Celo community land. This level “feels about right to folks, says Gib, “as they want to ensure a real sense of community and meetings that are manageable.”

“Living on Celo is not for everyone,” says Gib. “It’s a bad financial investment.” As a land trust, people cannot own the land, though they can own the homes or buildings on the property. For those who live on Celo proper, they enter into an agreement with the community for a lifetime lease, with any structure that they own passing on at value. The land trust maintains a financial cushion, developed early on, that enables it to provide small loans to members for development and buy-back should people leave.

Members commit to share in the maintenance of walking trails and watershed and to attend a general

corporate meeting each month to make decisions about building, maintenance and membership. These meetings are informal and efficient; with most discussions taking place in one of three committees (property, membership and finances). Decisions are made by consensus.

If you ask Gib why this community has been successful and sustained over the years, he says, “because we are a land-holding cooperative and we don’t try to be anything else. We are not religious, there is no charismatic leader.” Jeff adds, “as a land trust people cannot sell off land in the open market if they decide they no longer want to be here. This is often what divides communities where property is private.”

Gib continues, “In addition, people have to live here for at least a year before they officially become members. As a community, we all want to be sure it’s going to be a good fit. After living in the community for a year, we typically either know we have a good fit or people self-eliminate, making their own decision not to join Celo proper. More often than not, however, they then purchase homes in the area.” Jeff says, “because they desire the social community that Celo offers.”

So what is so compelling about the social community? What’s not compelling? Celo seems to speak to people who not only desire community, but who also want to create community by working and playing together as well as serving and giving back to one another and their community. A significant number of members work as artists, teachers, physicians, health care workers, builders and social workers. People are interested in issues of social justice and they work in the world at large to make it a more humane place. The camp, the school and a health clinic, though privately owned, sit upon the Celo property.

Getting together is a strong raison d’etre for Celo. Thirty years ago Cabin Fever University began and each year the college catalog boasts events from the seriously academic to the fun and festive: community dinners, wildflower walks, creative sculpture events, and music

festivals. Last year there was a potato dinner where everything had to be made from potatoes, including the vodka. Finally, there is also the simple community pleasures of neighbor helping neighbor. Jeff shared the story of he and his wife, Margot Atuk, building their home from timbers they had cut and milled on site. When it came time to raise the timbers he says,

“I felt shy about asking my neighbors for help. I was prepared to hire a crane when one of my friends said, ‘that would be one of the most selfish things you could do. This is the kind of thing we live for!’ So I invited everyone to help with a good old-fashioned barn-raising event. I tell you, there is nothing like lifting thousands of pounds with ease. This is the physical manifestation of community – community you can feel in your body.” And I could feel it in his telling of the story!
