AyoungJamaicanmanwalkedintoabankinNewYorkCityandaskedfortheloanofficer.HetoldtheloanofficerthathewasgoingtoJamaicaonavacationfortwoweeksandneededtoborrow$5,000.Thebankofficertoldhimthatthebankwouldneedsomeformofsecurityfortheloan,sotheJamaicanmanhandedoverthekeystoanewBMW740i.Thecarwasparkedonthestreetinfrontofthebank.TheJamaicanproducedthetitleandeverythingcheckedout.Theloanofficeragreedtoacceptthecarascollateralfortheloan.Thebank’spresidentanditsofficersallenjoedagoodlaughattheJamaicanforusinga$80,000BMWascollateralagainsta$5,000loan.AnemployeeofthebankthendrovetheBMWintothebank’sundergroundgarageandparkeditthere.Twoweekslater,theJamaicanmanreturned,repaidthe$5,000andtheinterest,whichcameto$15.41.Theloanofficersaid,“Sir,weareveryhappytohavehadyourbusiness,andthistransactionhasworkedoutverynicely,butwearealittlepuzzled.Whileyouwereaway,wecheckedyououtandfoundthatyouareasuccessfulbusinessman.Whatpuzzlesusis,whywouldyoubothertoborrow$5,000?”TheJamaicanreplies:“WhereelseinNewYorkCitycanIparkmycarfortwoweeksforonly$15.41andexpectittobetherewhenIreturn?”Thebankemployeeswatchashepulledoutofthegarage,windowsdownandsunroofopen.Themusicwasblastingfromhiscarashepulledaway,“Werunthings,thingsnorunwe,everythingwedo,itdoneproperly.”

IhadjustrushedinfromthestreettomyposhJamaicanhotel,butpausedtoattendtosomeurgentbusinessintherestroombeforegoinguptomyownroom.IwasbarelysittingdownwhenIheardavoicefromtheotherstallsaying:“Hi,howareyou?”I’mnotthetypetostartaconversationinthemen’srestroomsbutIdon’tknowwhatgotintome,soIanswered,somewhatembarrassedly:“DoinjustFine!”Andtheotherguysays:“Sowhatareyouupto?”Whatkindofquestionisthat?Atthatpoint,I’mthinkingthisistoobizarresoIsay:“Uhhh,I’mlikeyou,mostlybusiness!”AtthispointIamjusttryingtogetoutasfastasIcanwhenIhearanotherquestion.“CanIcomeovertoyourplace?”Ok,thisquestionisjustwackybutIfiguredIcouldjustbepoliteandendtheconversation.Itellhim,“Well,Ihavecompanyover,sotodayisabaddayforme!”ThenIheartheguysaynervously...“LISTEN!!!I’llhavetocallyouback,there’sanidiotintheotherstallwhokeepsansweringallmyquestions,bye!”

Buju Banton Is One Charge Away From Emancipation Thanks to New Times

lawyerspointedoutBantonhasneverpossessedtheLugersemiautomatichandgunthatwasfoundonJamesMack,themanroundedupinthesamestingafterdrivingtoFloridafromAtlantawith$135,000forcocaineinhiscar.Infact,thetwomenhadnevermet.Weighingthosecircumstances,JudgeJamesMoodytossedouttheallegationbuthandedBantontenyearsforthedrugcharges.Thegovernmentappealed,andapanelofjudgesinAtlantastapledfiveyearsbackontoBanton’stime.ThehighercourtcitedthePinkertonliabilityrule,aprovisionthatmakesacriminalresponsibleforoffensescommittedbyaco-conspirator.

“Clearlyfromtheperspectiveoftheethicsinjournalism,you’llgotojailbeforeyouturnoveryournotes.Butthereareexceptionstothoserules,andIthinkthoseexceptionsareinthiscase,”saysCharlesN.Davis,aprofessorattheUniversityofMissouri’sSchoolofJournalism.“Hereyouhaveawomanwhoisessentiallyaccusinghimofamuchworsejournalismcrime,whichiseffectivelyfabrication,oratleastdeception.IfIwerehim,Iwouldhavedonetheexactsamethingtoclearmyjournalisticname.”
