WELCOME!

Welcome! You have come to hear the Word of God, and you shall hear it read and preached. But we hope that by hearing it, you will also meet the Word of God, the Living Word, Jesus, our Master and Savior. And we pray that you will leave our church equipped to serve him more faithfully and effectively.

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness,

And all these things shall be added unto you.Alleluia! Alleluia!

Ask and it shall be given unto you, Seek and ye shall find,

Knock and the door shall be opened unto you.Alleluia! Alleluia!

Leader: To abide in you; to find strength in you; Our world offers many wide avenues and beautiful boulevards to walk. People: Our God invites us to walk the road of servanthood and sacrifice.to worship you in these moments, we gather, O God.

Leader: Our society suggests we put down our roots in the shallow soil of pleasure and greed.To challenge the evil around us; to bring healing to the hurt;

People: Our God seeks to plant us on the banks of hope, watered by the rivers of joy and grace.Leader: Our culture promotes achievement, success, climbing to the top, ringing the bell.People: Our God tells us if we want to be first, we need to go to the end of the line.to offer hope to the vulnerable, we follow, Jesus our Brother. Leader: To learn how to live; to put away our old gods; People: to stick with God in every moment, we listen, Holy Spirit.Together: Let us worship the living, loving God.

*HYMN ““Now Thank We All Our GodPraise the Lord, God’s Glories Show” 481 555 CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God, We confess how much we are like those first disciples of Jesus. Our cravings for more and more toss us about like leaves in the Fall winds. We boast of our great wisdom, yet do not understand your ways of peace and gentleness. We do not plant ourselves in your hope and grace, and so reap harvests of disorder and conflict. Draw near to us, Gracious God, and forgive us. Draw us into your tender arms, and teach us peace, gentleness, the willingness to put the other first, the wisdom to serve instead of seize, so we might bring forth a harvest of righteousness, justice, and peace in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.   We could put on the comfortable shirt of faith, but prefer fear with its frayed cuffs and stains on the front.  We could slip on the loafers of peace, but squeeze into the stiff dress shoes of anger.  We could wrap truth around our lives, yet instead we punch holes in the belt of falsehood so it always fits.     Hear us, Faithful God, and rescue us from our worst selves.  When we are lonely, you offer us your heart as a refuge.  When we are broken, you knit us back together.  When we are afraid, you promise to draw us into your embrace.  When we are faithless, you

5

continue to call us to follow Jesus Christ, the only Word we need in the midst of so many hollow promises.  Amen.PRAYER OF CONFESSION In the mystery of creation, Imaginative God, you shaped beauty and goodness, yet we damage it by our selfishness and anger. In the mystery of life, Child of Hope, you became one of us, yet all too often we turn our back on you. In the mystery of peace, Breath of Life, you would gentle our natures, yet we cling tenaciously to our bitterness and hurt. In the mystery of grace, Holy God, you forgive us our sins, that we might embrace others. In the mystery of mercy, you touch our lips, that we might speak gently to others. In the mystery of hope, you claim us as family, sisters and brothers of the One who brought new life for all, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Am

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Pg.. 465 620 Psalm 1Isaiah 40:28-31

(NSRV)1   Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers; 2   but their delight is in the law of the LORD , and on his law they meditate day and night. 3   They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. 4   The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. 5   Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; 6   for the LORD  watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God,

    the Creator of the ends of the earth.

He does not faint or grow weary;

    his understanding is unsearchable.

29 He gives power to the faint,

    and strengthens the powerless.

30 Even youths will faint and be weary,

    and the young will fall exhausted;

31 but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,

    they shall mount up with wings like eagles,

they shall run and not be weary,

    they shall walk and not faint.

NEW TESTAMENT LESSON Pgs.1055-1056 1031 Romans 8:12-17I Thessalonians 5:16-24 James 3:13-4:3, 7-8 (NSRV) 313   Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. 14   But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. 15   Such wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, devilish. 16   For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and wickedness of every kind. 17   But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. 18   And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace.

4 Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you? 2   You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3   You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures. 7   Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8   Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

16   Rejoice always, 17   pray without ceasing, 18   give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19   Do not quench the Spirit. 20   Do not despise the words of prophets, 21   but test everything; hold fast to what is good; 22   abstain from every form of evil.

23   May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24   The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this.Romans 8:12-17

WE RESPOND TO GOD’S WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH— - The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
