How we teach and deliver our curriculum in year 1.

As a Year 1 team, we strive to motivate and challenge our children

in all areas of the curriculum.To ease the transition from FS2 we

incorporate practical elements within our sessions and gradually introduce more written and recording work. Still

valuing the importance of children learning through play, through which they have the opportunity to explore and problem solve for themselves.

For the first 6 weeks the children will stay with their class teacher, so we can get to know them while they

settle in.

What it looks like in practice.Literacy – Every child will be in a ability group for daily RML(Ruth Miskin Literacy) sessions, five mornings a week. RML is a phonics based Literacy programme.Numeracy – Children will start by staying with their class teacher and their work will be differentiated according to their individual needs. As the year progresses the children will be ability grouped across the year group.

APP Grids. (Assessing.Pupil.Progress.)

In Year 1 the children we will be moving onto Year 1 APP grids. They will be assessed in reading, writing and maths. The levels start at 1c, then work their way up to 1b and then 1a. Some children may achieve a level 2c. Within the levels there are separate sections and specific skills they need to master before progressing to the next level.Your child will need to show they are consistently using these skills before we award the level.

Ruth Miskin Literacy OverviewPhonic sounds – Children will

learn the pure phonic sounds, which will lead onto ‘fred talk’ and ‘blending’ for reading ditties and increasingly challenging books.Letter formation rhymes – Children will learn the letter rhymes which will assist them in forming their letters correctly.Each child will have their own RML work booklet to work through which will be set at their level.

Numeracy OverviewIn numeracy there are 5 blocks to cover from A – E.The children cover the five blocks in a spiral format, which allows them to revisit each area every term.The blocks cover:• Numbers and the number

system.• Shape, space and measure.• Calculation.• Handling data.• and Problem solving.We like to make the numeracy sessions practical and gradually encourage more recording of our work.

Key areas to support your child during this year.

Reading: Listen to your child read everyday and write a comment in the reading record about how they’ve read. Encourage your child to discuss features of the book, including the plot, events along the way, predictions and characters.Reading a variety of books – e.g. traditional tales, poetry and non-fiction.Please don’t be tempted to race through the stages, we often read and reread to consolidate their skills.

Writing: Encourage your child to adopt a ‘have a go’ attitude.Writing their own cards, invitations and lists is brilliant practise.Gently remind your child about their pencil grip and fingers spaces.Putting your child’s writing on display, shows you value it.Providing a selection of pens, pencils and paper may encourage them to ‘have a go’.

Numeracy:Learning number bonds to 10 and 20.Correctly forming number formations.Counting objects and money.Recognising shapes and coins.Learning to tell the time.Use objects around the house to estimate and measure.

Homework arrangements.• Your child will bring a learning log home

every week, this needs to be brought back every Monday to allow time for your class teacher to mark it and hand it back in time.

• Your child will bring a reading book bag home everyday, please ensure this is returned everyday with the reading record and reading book inside.

• Please will you write a comment about how your child read in the reading record book to maintain continuity.

• Your child will also choose a library book every week and bring it home in the navy blue St Johns book bag. This is for you to share and enjoy with your child. Please return the library book every Monday.

Trips and activities

• Seaside trip to the Abbey pumping station – date to be confirmed.

• Puppet theatre company coming into Year 1 to perform a show.

• Other trips and activities yet to be arranged and confirmed.
