Year 1 Science (6.P.2)
PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL CHANGES
CLASS OPENER• Complete the following in tile #2 on your title page (top
RIGHT square):
• Label the tile with Phases of Matter (should be written in GREEN)
• List the 3 main phases of matter in BLUE and describe their characteristics
• Draw a picture that represents each phases (3 pictures total) and color them
• Tile should be neat and COLORFUL
Whatever is not complete in the first 5 minutes of class will be for homework
NOTE EXPECTATIONS• notes must be written neatly
• letters should not be too BIG!
• write on each line, unless instructed to skip a line for another section
• have a puke page on standby: if you run out of room on the first page, then continue writing on the puke page (glue after the presentation!)
TOP OF THE PAGE
Your notes should contain the following at the top of the page:•The essential question (EQ: What is the difference between a physical and chemical change?)•The date (21 November 2014) and page # •The title (Physical and Chemical Changes)
REVIEW• Atoms make up matter, which can be
classified as either a substance or mixture
• Examples of mixtures: homogenous (solutions) and heterogeneous (suspensions)
• Examples of substances: elements (Oxygen) and compounds (table salt- NaCl)
• There are over 100 known elements in the world
• Elements are arranged on the periodic table
• There are over 100 known elements in the world
• Elements are arranged on the periodic table*
• Each element has it’s own symbol and atom*

• Elements combine in multiple ways that make up living and non-living things
• Atoms make up elements (which are examples of matter); atoms have the same properties of the element

Skip 1 Line
• Matter will undergo 2 types of changes: physical and
chemical changes
Skip 1 Line
PHYSICAL CHANGE
• alters the form or appearance of matter but does not create a new substance; atom arrangement doesn’t change
IT’S A PHYSICAL CHANGE IF THE MATTER:• Changes shape
• Size
• Dissolves
• It changes phase (freezes, boils, evaporates, condenses)
BRAIN BREAK
With your group, come up with the meaning of physical change in your own words and given an example of a physical change.
Skip 1 Line
CHEMICAL CHANGE• produces 1 or more new
substances with properties different from those of the original substances; the way the atoms combine is different
IT’S A CHEMICAL CHANGE IF THE MATTER:
• Burns
• Temperature changes without heating or cooling
• Makes a gas
• Changes color
• Forms a precipitate

NOTE REVIEW
• highlight in yellow physical and chemical changes
• underline in red the definitions of physical and chemical changes
• circle in blue the examples of physical and chemical changes
• outline Matter Background in green
