Year 10 Drama
Component 1 Pre-Learning
In order to prepare for your Component 1 exam next term, it is essential that you com-
plete the following activities thoughtfully and in detail:
You should mind-map, research and explore the stimulus materials for the Compo-
nent 1 devised project which takes place next term and will be worth 40% of your
GCSE in total.
The choice of stimulus for your Component 1 devised piece will be taken from the 4
stimuli below:
‘She knew that he wore his life on his skin, that his biography was written in flesh and
on his bones’. (A Little Life – Hanya Yanagihara) (quote)
‘Oh! You Pretty Things’ – David Bowie (song)
‘Power’s not given to you. You have to take it’. – Beyonce (quote)
‘System Failure’ – Igor Morski (image)
Over the next two pages you can find the lyrics of the song and a copy of the Ignor Morski
image. You MUST listen to the song online- do not just read the lyrics as they do not com-
municate the full meanings of the song.
Mind-map templates can be found on pages 5 –8.
Good luck!

‘Oh! You Pretty Things’ – David Bowie
Wake up you sleepy head Put on some clothes, shake up your bed
Put another log on the fire for me I've made some breakfast and coffee Look out my window what do I see
A crack in the sky and a hand reaching down to me All the nightmares came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay
What are we coming to No room for me, no fun for you I think about a world to come
Where the books were found by the golden ones Written in pain, written in awe
By a puzzled man who questioned What we were here for
All the strangers came today And it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh you pretty things (oh you pretty things)
Don't you know you're driving your Mamas and papas insane
Oh you pretty things (oh you pretty things) Don't you know you're driving your
Mamas and papas insane Let me make it plain
You gotta make way for the homo superior
Look at your children See their faces in golden rays
Don't kid yourself they belong to you They're the start of a coming race
The earth is a bitch Weve finished our news
Homo sapiens have outgrown their use All the strangers came today
And it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh you pretty things (oh you pretty things) Don't you know you're driving your
Mamas and papas insane Oh you pretty things (oh you pretty things)
Don't you know you're driving your Mamas and papas insane
Let me make it plain You gotta make way for the homo superior

Things to consider/explore when mind-mapping:
• The background of the artist/songwriter/singer/speaker • The context of the stimulus;
• When was it created/spoken • Why was it created/spoken
• What political or social issues can be linked to the stimulus (use the news and politics to help you and come up with as many ideas as you can
• Unpick the stimulus– explore finer details; particular words or lines, specific col-ours used
• Who you think the intended recipient/audience of the stimulus is and why • What the stimulus makes you think or feel and why • Which characters or stories it makes you think of • Adjectives you can use to describe the stimulus • What scenarios or situations the stimulus makes you think of • What emotions it creates or explores • What pictures or images does it make you see • Is it inspiring? How and why?
