Overview of Topics: Students will sit a section of a past GCSE English Language exam, which tests their ability to craft writing for genre, audience and purpose. The question will require them to reflect and comment on contemporary issues, situations or problems affecting young people. There will be one question and the exam will last for 50 minutes. Resources: Students will be provided with examples of past questions to practise preparing and planning. Students will be given materials to support their revision. In addition to this they can access activities to support their spelling, punctuation and grammar on-line, for instance using BBC Bitesize and the Bristol University website: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/arts/exercises/grammar/grammar_tutorial/page_41.htm Homework: Students have recently studied, or are currently studying, non-fiction texts in their English lessons. Homework will be set requiring them to analyse a range of different materials, which will allow them to spend time looking at both content and crafting of the type of text they will be required to produce. Study Support: There will be a weekly lunch time drop in on a Wednesday for any students wanting extra support in smaller groups on specific topics.

Mathematics:

Overview of Topics: Students are following the Edexcel GCSE scheme of work and have completed a significant amount of the course to date. Resources: Students have been provided with a GCSE revision guide, however, if they have mislaid their copy, they should ask Mrs Button for a replacement. All students have access to MyMaths and MathsWatch, these are resources which enable students to revise topics, through video clips or step by step lessons, and to practise said topics. MathsWatch has on line worksheets and students have access to the answers: therefore students can self-assess the work they have completed. MyMaths offers on line worksheets which are marked by the programme. Students also have access to Corbett Maths and Mr Barton Maths, both of which have past papers and exemplar solutions. Homework: Homework is weekly tasks set on MyMaths: these tasks are designed to encourage revision of past topics and to consolidate newly gained knowledge. Study Support: The mathematics team are available at lunchtime to provide additional support to students. Students can also use Edmodo, as a forum for requesting support, sharing ideas and discussing any problems they may be experiencing with revision.

Art and Design

From January the Year 10 Art and Design students will start a new unit: Identity: For this new project students will investigate a wide range of themes, images and concepts to develop their individual art work. They will use different approaches and media to explore their ideas as well as looking at the work created by several artists, photographers and people from other places that have strong identities such as politicians, musicians and actors. These investigations will enable the Year 10 students not only to appreciate what Identity actually means but to also to understand the influence and impact on today’s society. To support their enquiries our students will also look at significant historical periods in time such as America in the Sixties and important world events including the First World War. Homework: Students will be expected to develop their work outside of school hours and will be given homework tasks to support them, both visual and written. They will be encouraged to attend the Art Support sessions on Tuesday lunch times to develop their work further, use the departments resources and ask for help and advise if required.
