NON NOBIS SOLUM
The Year 12 Student Council organised Shave for a Cure on Wednesday 6th May. The aim of the event was to raise money for the Leukaemia Founda on. Seven brave boys shed their locks for this great cause. Bailey Kent, Aus n Pell, Tom Wya , Sam Harris, Kane Midgley, Aiden Lowe‐Brock and Jamie Reichardt.
Prior to the shave these boys raised $1276 . An addi onal $369.50 was raised on the day by students and staff of Mareeba State High School bringing the grand total to $1645.50. (Con nued on next page)
PRINCIPAL’SWORDSWe are half way through Term 2 and it has been especially busy with NAPLAN, Yr 6 transi on and Yr 10 work experience in the last few
weeks. It has also been great to see so many of our young people ge ng involved in the community through ANZAC Day, the wheelbarrow race and the recent Student Council fundraiser “Shave for a Cure”. This is the heart of our mo o “Non nobis solum”.
At the April P&C I spoke about the school’s recent review and it is good news. The review assesses the school against the Na onal School Improvement Tool and looks at 9 key areas. The review replaces the former Teaching and Learning and Discipline Audits. The work over the last four years to implement be er support for students to come to school every day, to improve student behaviour and to ensure the highest standards of teaching in every class are showing strong success. Our work with parents, families, local schools and business and community organisa ons is also a strength. As always, there is more work to do and the review also contains recommenda ons for further improvement. The review findings are on the school website. I would encourage all parents to read the document and have input into the school’s next strategic plan which will commence next year and con nue un l 2019.
Lastly, the school musical is coming up shortly, “Ha ng Alison Ashley” and I am looking forward to seeing our budding thespians on stage. I hope all families can find me to a end.
Warm regards to all families.
Jo Soothill Principal
WRITINGFORTHEWRITEROn Tuesday 5th May, eager Year 7, 8 and 9 students filed into the library to be greeted by the warm and welcoming smile of author Mr. Barry Jonsberg. Barry Jonsberg was a laugh and a half as he cap vated the students with a humor‐ous and educa onal day. All students worked enthusias cally throughout the sessions, with the excep on of me taken out for a delicious lunch and the informal Book Club mee ng and discussion me with Mr Jonsberg. We learnt many useful wri ng techniques from ‘Show don’t
tell’ to ‘Adverbs must die!’ It was a fantas c day and hopefully every student can take the many brilliant tech‐niques and advice on their wri ng journey. Clayre Girgen —Year 7 Stu‐dent
