ON-LINE SUPPORT

All Beauchamp College students have access to SAM Learning interactive revision material. Students can access SAM learning through a link on the Beauchamp portal or by logging in to www.samlearning.com

In order to access their accounts students will need their own individual login information:

Centre id; lE2BC

user id; dOB followed by student initials ddmmyyxx eg. 030782ja

Password; dOB followed by student initials ddmmyyxx eg. 030782ja (same as user id)

Students have an ability to select from a list of subjects at GCSE level and are then required to enter the relevant exam board and the unit/topic they wish to revise. Many subjects are in the form of multiple choice or short answer questions. Some activities self-mark and give instant feedback, others give model answers to allow students to check their answers.

Beauchamp On-Line Learning – BOLL (accessed through the portal)

Students can access BOLL through the Beauchamp portal. Through BOLL students have access to a variety of information and revision material to support learning and revision. Students should subscribe to the different course they are taking and through this they will be able to access specification information, revision material and other important learning tools.

• Provider of the tools for homework and revision – a quiet space at home, a work box of pens, pencils, highlighters and other equipment.

• Banker – paying for tools, folders and revision guides they will need.

• Sounding board and adviser – helping your child break down tasks into manageable chunks, celebratory progress and challenging underperformance/lack of effort.

• Project manager – agreeing rules for homework and revision (without these they may not work as hard as they need too!)

• information provider – finding copies of past paper examination papers, websites.

• Study buddy – show an interest in the subject and where possible use material to question your child to help aid revision and make it more interactive.

An active interest by parents is key to supporting success!

STAGES OF EXAM PREPARATION

STAGE 1understanding the content first time around

The process of revision (literally meaning to look at something again) assumes that the content of the subject has been learnt and understood in the first place. Attendance to all lessons is paramount and encouraging students to question when they are unsure is key to understanding.

STAGE 2Revision

Revision encourages student to re-visit work they have previously covered to help keep this knowledge fresh and in their memory ready for recall in the exam situation. Active revision, where students create something, e.g. mind maps, key cards, podcasts or posters, is more effective than just looking at or reading class notes.

STaGE 3application of knowledge to questions

This involves students applying what they have learnt to exam questions. Practice questions and past papers along with the mark schemes are extremely valuable revision tools. Creating model answers is also very good practice.

There are 3 skills required to sit an exam effectively:

• Knowing the content matter• Organisational skills to ensure your time is managed successfully• Exam technique to ensure you carefully read and fully understand the questions, offer

answers to all questions and ensure you give sufficient breadth and detail in your answer to get all available marks.

5 tiPs for effective revision

• A tidy, undisturbed place to work• A comfortable chair• A bright table lamp• Pen, pencils, paper

Learning by heart - try to memorise

• Connections between fact and patterns• vocabulary in whichever language you are studying (inc English)• Quotations from literature• Diagram of drawings• Mathematical formulae

active learning – you can stimulate your mind and learn effectively by;

• Briefly write down important points• Test yourself• Read out loud• Underlining interesting points or quotations• Making up word games or mnemonics to help you• Persuading someone to re-test you on what you have learned

Revision notes – make and modify your notes to help you by;

• Putting only main points on cards• Test yourself using your key-point notes• Use a revision guide to help provide you with the essential information

Word patterns to memorise – it may help to jog your memory by using word patterns examples can be seen below;

• Word associations e.g. meiosis in ovaries, mitosis in toes• Initial letters e.g. My very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets = Mercury, venus,

Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto• Rhymes – wind blows from high to low

Tests and exams can be a challenging part of school life for students and parents. Not all stress is bad, as a little can help us feel motivated. However, when a situation feels overwhelming, or beyond your control, you can become distressed, which can be damaging to your physical and mental health.

Watch out for exam stress and be aware of the signs…

Signs of stress can include being irritable, sleeping poorly, loss of appetite, worrying, feeling very negative, headaches and stomach aches.

What can you do if you are feeling stressed?

1. Eat well

A balanced diet is vital to health and feeling well. Avoid foods high in caffeine, fat or sugar which can leave you feeling hyperactive, irritable and moody.

2. Get enough sleep

Most teenagers need 8-10 hours each night. Wind down before going to sleep and avoid late night cramming right before bed.

3. Get some exercise

Exercise can boost energy levels, clear the mind and improve your mood.

4. Talk to someone about how you feel

This can be a parent, family member, friend or teacher.

5. make time for rest, other activities and hobbies

This can help take your mind off the stress and help you feel refreshed.

6. Ask someone to help you with your revision

Working with a friend or asking a parent to test you can add variety to your revision.
