Year 11 and Beyond: Information Evening

Our aim is to prepare young people to become active,caring and confident citizens who lead rewarding lives.

We want every student who leaves Beaumont to do so witha sense of pride in their achievements, an awareness oftheir responsibilities and a sense of appreciation for all theopportunities they have experienced.

We will support all students during this year hopefully toachieve these aims.

How to Revise Effectively

Before you begin…...

✓ Find a suitable place to work which is peaceful.

✓ Ensure you have all the equipment you need at

the start.

✓ Ensure you don’t have distractions, put your

phone out of the room.

✓ Revise in 45 minute blocks then have a 15

minute break.

1) Recalling Information (Retrieval Practice)

X Don’t just re-read information

X Don’t just highlight your notes

✓ Summarise the information you need to learn.

✓ Read your revision notes, cover them up

and set a ten minute timer and write down

as much as you can about the topic.

✓ Do use quizzes and the help of

other people to test your knowledge

and memory.

1) Recalling Information (Retrieval Practice)

2) Dual Coding

✓ Do use dual coding when you have text

heavy notes that could be represented

visually.

✓ Do try to come up with a variety of

different ways to represent information

visually, e.g. timelines, diagrams, flow

diagrams, cartoon strips, etc.

✓ Do remember to try and recall these

diagrams during retrieval practice.

3) Spacing and Interleaving

✓ Do create a revision table where

each subject or topic is spaced out.

Each time you return to the topic,

you will remember more and more.

✓ Do interleave 2-3 subjects in a day

or week.

So, what can you learn from this?

✓ Retrieval is the key - make your brain work and

then it will remember the knowledge.

✓ Test yourself and get others to test you - make your

brain work and then it will remember the knowledge.

✓ Change text into a range of diagrams - make your

brain think.

✓ Plan ahead so you can space out revision for each

subject and you can revise a few subjects each day.
