How to revise for English Literature

• Make notes, mindmaps or posters for each character, theme or contextual factor.

Revising for English Language Reading:
• Read– fiction and non-fiction such as newspapers, magazines, websites, etc.
• Buy a newspaper – talk about the contents.• Create a reading space and insist on at least 10
minutes reading per day.• Parents, make the time to ask your son/daughter
about their reading.• You could even read the same articles and then
discuss it with them, trying to draw out the main ideas/arguments of a piece and the writer’s techniques. Let them teach you!

• Get students to check their writing when they have finished to ensure that it is as accurate as possible

Evaluate - Students should use the information supplied, as well as their knowledge and understanding, to consider evidence for and against.
Explain - Students should make something clear, or state the reasons for something happening.
Give - Only a short answer is required, not an explanation or a description.
Identify - Name or otherwise characterise.
Justify - Use evidence from the information supplied to support an answer.

Evidence - Data which has been shown to be valid.
Fair test - A fair test is one in which only the independent variable has been allowed to affect the dependent variable.
Hypothesis - A proposal intended to explain certain facts or observations.
Interval - The quantity between readings, eg a set of 11 readings equally spaced over a distance of 1 metre would give an interval of 10 centimetres.

A consistent range of question types are used:
• closed: multiple-choice, link boxes, sentence completion, labelling diagrams
• open: labelling/drawing diagrams, short answer, calculations, extended response.
