What’s it all about???
• NCEA- National Certificate of Educational Achievement
• 24 Credits available – we will be doing 20 credits this year
• 12 internal (at school) and • 8 external (in the November exams)
Internal Credits• These are given for work done
during the year.• During this year you will be offered
12 internal credits.• This means you will have to
produce three pieces of work for your teacher to mark.
• Each piece of work (called assignments or assessments) is worth 4 credits.
Grading
Your work is given one of four grades:
• Not Achieved – you get no credits for this
• Achieved – 4 credits• Merit – 4 credits• Excellence – 4 credits
Endorsements
If you get a lot of credits over the year with Excellence or Merit you
will get an endorsement certificate from NCEA and a badge from the
principal !
Ooops!
• If you make a boo-boo and get Not Achieved you may be given the chance to fix it up.
• If you make a tiny stuff-up which means you did not quite get the next grade up, you may be given the chance to fix it up.
Moderation
• All of your assignments will be marked at school and double-checked by other teachers this is called moderation.
• The school will keep all of your work for a year.
• Some of it will be sent to Wellington for checking – more moderation.
How long will I have to complete my assessments?
• You will be given class-time and you are expected to do some work at home.
• If you have time-management issues you must discuss this with your teacher before the due date.
Topics
This year we are going to study three topics:
• Medicine Through Time• Tudors and Stuarts & the
English Civil War• The French Revolution
But it all seems so complicated...
• It will seem a little complicated at first.
• Your teacher understands what is required so don’t worry too much.
The Standards• In year 11 history there are six
standards.• These are too many…• So, at our school we will be doing
five standards.• Three during the year and two in
November.• This means that the history exam in
November will only be two hours for you.
Here are the standards...• AS 91001 1.1 Carry out an investigation of an
historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal)
• AS 91002 1.2 Demonstrate understanding of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal)
• AS 91004 1.4 Demonstrate understanding of different perspectives of people in an historical event of significance to New Zealanders (internal)
• AS 91005 1.5 Describe the causes and consequences of an historical event (external)
• AS 91006 1.6 Describe how a significant historical event affected New Zealand society (external)
(note that the standard AS 91003 1.3 Interpret sources of an historical event of significance to
New Zealanders – is not there)
Confusion…
• You will be confused by the numbers and big words. Don’t worry. You will have a copy of these in the front of your exercise book.
• And… they are on the wall. Can you see them?
How does it all work?
• Your teachers have read the standards and knitted them together with the topics.
• This means that if you work hard on the internal assessments they will help you to pass the external assessments
A plus?...
• In NCEA history you can often answer the external (November) exams on just one topic you have studied.
• But the 1.6 must refer to New Zealand society
Your first assessment – term 1
• AS 91001 1.1 Carry out an investigation of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal)
• This will be given to you in term 1 week 6 and will be due term 1 week 9
Your second assessment – term 2
AS 91002 1.2 Demonstrate understanding of an historical event, or place, of significance to New Zealanders (internal)
This will be given to you in term 3 week 5 and will be due term 3 week 6
Your third assessment – term 4
AS 91004 1.4 Demonstrate understanding of different perspectives of people in an historical event, of significance to New Zealanders (internal)
This will given to you term 2 week 5 and due the same week
What about Tudors and Stuarts?
This term two topic also fits with two different standards:
AS 91002 1.4 Demonstrate understanding of different perspectives of people in an historical event of significance to New Zealanders (internal)
AS 91005 1.5 Describe the causes and consequences of an historical event (external)
And The French Revolution...
AS 91002 1.2 demonstrate understanding of an historical event, or place of significance to New Zealanders (internal)
AS 91005 1.5 Describe the causes and consequences of an historical event (external)
Connections...
In the Tudors and Stuarts and French Revolution topics there
are definite areas ‘of significance to new
Zealanders’
School exams in September
During the practice exams you will attempt the external standards 1.5
& 1.6 and
We will also practice these before you sit the school exams.
The last word…The 2011, 2012 1nd 2013 results for level one History students were the best in the
school!!
