Welcome


Curriculum for Year 11 Students:

• English• Maths• Science• Citizenship• Philosophy and Ethics• Personal, Social and Health Education• Games and Health & Self


Plus up to four Option subjects.

These are chosen from:

• French, German, Spanish• Electronics, Engineering, Resistant Materials,

Textiles, Graphics, Food Technology• Geography, History, PE, ICT, Business Studies• Art, Drama, Music• Triple Science


Some students also follow:

• A College or Farm course• Functional Skills• Foundation Learning


Some of these courses are ‘Modular’

These courses have already had exams in Year 10 that count towards the GCSE


Modular GCSEs are:

• English• Philosophy and Ethics• Science• Geography


In some cases it is possible to resit modules in order to improve results

The cost of these resits may be passed on to parents

Decisions regarding resits are made within subject areas


Most courses have a coursework element

Some of these coursework elements are done in school under ‘Controlled Assessment’


Courses with Controlled Assessment are:

• English• All DT subjects• Geography• History• Science• All Languages


Controlled Assessment has been happening in Year 10 and may be have been completed in many subjects


Some courses are ‘continually assessed’

The work done throughout the course counts towards the GCSE


Courses that are continually assessed are:

• Art• ICT• Business Studies• PE (BTEC)


Some courses have a ‘Practical Assessment’

These generally take place in Year 11


Courses with a Practical Assessment are:

• PE (GCSE)• Music• Art • Drama


In courses that are modular or have controlled assessment or are

continually assessed, teachers will have a very good idea as to what grade students are likely to

achieve.

Individual subjects


English

ALL CONTROLLED ASSESSMENTS WILL NEED TO BE COMPLETED AND MARKED BY THE END OF APRIL 2013

Single Pathway:• Students who complete this course will receive a

single GCSE in English Language. • The majority of students that are taking this

pathway have already sat the English Language exam (June 2012). However, there will be the opportunity to retake this exam in June 2013.

• The remainder of the year will be spent working on Controlled Assessments. This will involve a piece on Wilfred Owen (Term 1) as well as Imaginative writing (Terms 2 and 3)

Duel Pathway:

• Students who complete this course will receive two GCSEs in English Language and English Literature.

• Year 11 students following this pathway have completed all but one piece of Controlled Assessment – Spoken Language – will be written in Term 1.

• Where a student has not achieved the appropriate grade in a piece of Controlled Assessment, they will be required to attend sessions provided by the English Department in order to redo the task. These sessions will be run on Tuesdays after school (3.45-5.00) and will start on 2nd October.

• The majority of the year will be spent studying texts in preparation for the January and June examinations.

Revision Sessions

• From 2nd October until the end of Year 11, Controlled Assessment rewrites/Revision will take place on a Tuesday afternoon (3.45-5.00)

• Rewrites will take place in Terms 1 and 3. Students will receive letters inviting them to attend.

• Revision for the Information and Ideas examination will begin in Term 2.

• Revision for the Literature examinations will take place in Term 4.


Maths


• Revision sessions start 19th/20th Sept• Students have been invited to these and

attendance is reliant in 100% effort in lessons • We expect 100% commitment to these

sessions with extra work being set that needs to be completed. We will contact home if students are not doing as required in these sessions.


•Letters will be going home about revision guides & DVDs in the next couple of weeks - these are optional purchases •The department will issue

resources during the Spring/summer term to help focus on exam preparation.


Science


Science is one of the modular subjects and as such there will be exams in January that are part of the GCSE.

Double Science is made up of Core and Additional

Students completed to Core Science course in Year 10 and should have a grade for this dependent on any resits


Coursework in science

As part of the AQA Science GCSEs students complete a ‘controlled assessment’. The coursework counts for 25% of the final GCSE mark. Students have several chances at this and it represents a great chance to boost their exam score.

The next one of these takes place during the Collapsed Timetable days in October (24th and 25th )


Revision guides

You will receive a letter asking for a contribution towards the purchase of a CGP revision guide and workbook for your child. If all students have these we can ensure consistent and rigorous preparation for exams.

Design &

Technology


• Controlled assessment deadlines for all DT subjects will be during the month of February 2013, teachers will issues specific dates dependent on when lessons fall.

• Controlled assessment help sessions, catchup

(for those eligible), access to PC’s etc will be on Tuesday Lunchtimes, and Tuesday after school, this includes access to the workshops when needed.


• From end of Feb onwards revision sessions will mainly be held (dependent on the needs of the subjects / students) on Tuesdays after school.

• Individual revision guides and resources will be given out by specific subject teachers.

• Those doing Entry Level with Mr James will be informed separately what sessions they will need to attend.


Philosophy &Ethics


• Retakes are Friday 18th January and the deadline for entries is 5th October. Letters will be sent to parents soon with details and informing them of the cost. Teachers cannot use lesson time for revision for these exams so students will have to be proactive as they have revision guides and class notes already. Staff will be available at lunchtimes but students will have to 'book' times with us.

• .


• Nearer to the summer there will be lunchtime and after school revision sessions. • There is a revision guide on the school

website and an additional resource on the VLE called ActiveTeach. • There is also an e-mail address

which students can use to send in practice exam answers to mark


Citizenship


•All coursework should now be completed (60% of the final grade). • Parents will be informed

imminently if coursework has not been received. • Students will now be preparing for

the final exam in June.


Languages(French, German, Spanish)


• There will be one more CA each in Writing and Speaking before Christmas.

• Each of these is 15% of the GCSE and that it is therefore vital that students are thoroughly prepared and take the time required at home to memorise their draft prior to writing it out under exam conditions in one hour in class.

• Two CAs in each skill are submitted (one of each was completed in Year 10).

• There may be an opportunity to do a third in the spring, but this would be completed out of lesson time as most students will not need it.


ICT


• Absolute final deadline for all Unit 5, Unit 7 and Unit 23 updated work is Mon 22nd October

• Lunchtime catch ups available on Monday, Thursday and Friday - 1.50 - 2.30pm

• After school ICT club Tuesdays 3.30 - 4.45pm


History


• Catch up sessions/ revision sessions for the history department are available from Mrs Glaze any day at lunchtime except Thursdays.

• CA catch up sessions will be with Mrs Glaze and students who have still not done the CA will need to come and see Mrs Glaze as soon as possible.


Geography


• Unit 1 Examination (Resit)

Urban environments - January examination (worth 25% of GCSE)• Unit 2 Examination –

Hazards - January - 1hr examination (worth 25% of GCSE)• Unit 3 Examination –

Tourism - June 18th - 1hr examination (worth 25% of GCSE)


• Controlled Assessment Task 1 Fieldwork. Completed by February 2013

•There is a revision guide for each unit, which is augmented by past paper examination questions


Music


• Coursework deadline is Feb half term

• One to one catch up sessions for all students are run after school.

• All students will be expected to do some

of these and they are organised individually with students/parents if need be.


Art


GCSE Mock Exam

• Question paper distributed 10th September. Students have 10 weeks to complete their book work.

• 20 marks for art history• 20 marks for developing and experimenting with

ideas• 20 marks for drawing• Exam Deadline and 10 hour test November 26th and

27th.


GCSE Preparation Work

• Exam Paper handed out in January.• Provisional date for 10 hour test is

March 21st and 22nd.


GCSE Art Clubs

Extra afternoon classes will be supervised in the Art block every Tuesday and Thursday after school.

3.30pm-5.00pm.


Drama


• Completion of Response to Live Theatre written

task: Thursday 25th October 2012 (completed in school on Collapsed Timetable days)

• Completion of Unit 2 – Exploring Play Texts Documentary Response: Friday 21st December 2012 (completed in school in controlled conditions during lessons)

• The students will then have completed 60% of their GCSE in Drama.


• They will spend the remainder of the course preparing for their final practical exam which will take place in the week beginning 29th April 2013, and this represents the remaining 40% of their course.

• Additional after school rehearsal sessions will be available during in the weeks before the final exam. A timetable will be provided and all students will be expected to attend some of these sessions.

• A dress rehearsal slot will also be allocated to each group to allow students an experience of the exam conditions in the week before the exam.


GCSE PE


Key dates for GCSE PE:

• Fitness assessment 1 by the 21st of September • Fitness assessment 4 by Tuesday 6th November • Hand in date for their personal Exercise Programme

Friday the 16th November • Starting the 4th of March, two weeks of Contolled

Assessment. • Friday 22nd of March, Athletic moderation NOA 4pm till

7pm (compulsory) • April 22nd and 23rd Moderation days in school for all

practicals.


BUSINESS STUDIES


• Assessed in 3 parts:

• Marketing - Controlled assessment: 25% • People and Business – 1 hour exam: 25%• Production, Finance and the External

Business Environment – 1 ½ Hour exam based on a case study which will be available in advance of the exam: 50%


The Controlled assessment is currently in the planning stage (10 Hours) and will be followed by the write up stage (6 hours) which is due to be completed by the end of this term.(Friday 26th October)


Textbooks and revision guides:• A number of the group have bought the latest

course textbook• The school has spare copies of the old text

book that students can borrow and keep at home

• There is a specific OCR Business Studies revision guide that is particularly useful for the Case study exam. It is available from Amazon (It costs about £6 new & £3 used)
