® FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT

ADGA Friends, The 2016 Annual Meeting and Convention in Austin, Texas was a wonderful success. I cannot thank Caroline Lawson and the South Central Texas Goat Club enough for all of their hard work and dedication! It certainly takes a village to pull off an event of this size. The highlight for me was Youth Awards

Banquet. We had some fantastic youth apply for youth representa-tive, and any one of them would have done an outstanding job! For those who couldn't attend, I had the fortunate task to announce the winners. As I stated in my remarks before announcing the results, I truly feel the future of ADGA will be in good hands! I wish to con-gratulate our 2016/2017 ADGA Youth Representative Garrett Ot-terson, and Alternate Youth Representative, Phoebe Heino! I know you both will have an amazing year! On a personal note, I was humbled by being elected President of ADGA by the board of directors. I cannot thank them enough for entrusting me with the direction of the Association for the follow-ing year. There are no words to express how I feel, so I will give a sincere "Thank you". As ADGA is continuing to grow, this is the year to "Think outside the box" and to ask, "What if". We, as an association, need to look at all angles, and not assume the status quo is always the best way. Change can be scary, but it can also be a necessary part of growth. We need to tap into new talents, and develop the next generation, as they are our future! We need new ideas, and fresh ways to look at problems. We need to seek out resources and ask those difficult questions! I encourage you to reach out to your directors and share your ideas. Included in this issue of News & Events is the Summary of Board Actions from the Annual Meeting. I encourage you to read it, then once the official minutes are available, take the time to read them, as well. This is your association! I am always disappointed by how few members take time to sit in on the board meetings. There was a time when the entire meeting was closed session, so take ad-vantage, and sit and watch at the next convention that you attend!

Thank you, and as always, I welcome your thoughts and ideas.

OFFICE OF THE ASSOCIATION MANAGER

Dear ADGA Members, We welcome the 2016-17 ADGA Executive Committee with Ken Feaster-Eytchison serving as our new President; Philip Cassette, First Vice President; Thomas Cox, Second Vice President; Melissa O’Rourke, Member-at-Large; and Robin Saum, Immediate Past President. The Board of Directors had a full agenda and met for two very busy days at their annual meeting in October. It is

a privilege to serve with such a talented, dedicated, and inspiring team of individuals. Minutes of the meeting will be posted to the website in December.

As always, it is a pleasure to see old friends and meet new members at the annual convention. The South Central Texas Goat Club members were wonderful hosts to a great week in Austin. A big thanks goes out to the Annual Meeting committee and ALL the volunteers who worked so hard to keep events running smoothly. In 2013, we reported it to be the first year since 1986 that we had broken a record of 15,000 members. As of December 5, 2016, the roster listed 18,800 members. The numbers are growing in Russia and we also have members from Australia, Bermuda, Canada, Kenya, Mexico, Philippines and the United Kingdom. The top five states in total members are California, Texas, Ohio, Florida, and Washington. ADGA has experienced marked growth for the last ten years with a 28.2% increase in membership, 20.4% in registrations, 54.8% in herds on test, and 25% in animals appraised. We have exceeded our goal of 50,000 animal registrations this year, a new record, with 57% being completed online. Nigerian Dwarf became the leading breed with the highest number of registrations in 2016, topping Nubians, which held the record for many years. Sanctioned show totals for recent years are 2013-1170, 2014-1129, 2015-1157, and 2016-1226. The demand for dairy goats is strong, participation in official programs is growing, and the Association continues to be financially sound. We have unlimited opportunities to expand the dairy goat industry! Best wishes for happiness and prosperity in the New Year!

can Dairy Goat Association and may be resolved between the parties via nego-tiation, mediations, or in courts of civil jurisdiction. However, a dispute involving willful misrepresentation of fact as to the pedigree of any animal may be the subject of complaint to the Association.

G. Leave the first sentence and strike the 2nd sentence. “Nothing in these trade practice rules shall be construed as abridging in the right of the buyer and seller to enter into a private contract.” In the case of a complaint, if no written contract is presented as evidence, these trade practice rules shall govern.

Fitness to judge was referred to the EC, the EC recommends such issues be handled through the judge’s complaint process as outlined in the Guidebook. Board approved. 2015 Board referred to EC to establish

vestigate ways to increase commercial dairyman involvement. The EC unani-mously felt we have done many things in the recent past. We have adopted a bulk registration discount and the LA Committee has been working on a com-mercial herd project. Also, the majority of our members are hobbyist. We rec-ommend a brochure be created that ad-dresses how large or commercial herds can benefit from ADGA programs. This would be an item for the new Communi-cation Specialist. ADGA/Helen Staver Foundation The ADGA/Helen Staver Foundation was established to stimulate and support education, youth programs and research in the dairy goat in-dustry. Its purpose is to assist in the advancement of education, educa-tional materials and research by funding academic scholarships, con-ference scholarships, and the development of educational materials for the benefit of the dairy goat industry. The primary goal of the Foundation is to fund an endowment so that the Foundation would be able to consistently award scholarships and grants. The Foundation welcomes the ADGA community to assist in this endeavor. Additionally, the Foundation will work with individuals and organizations that are interested in establishing a separate scholar-ship or grant program through the Foundation. There have been dairy goat clubs which have already approached the Foundation about estab-lishing a separate scholarship fund in their name. Donations to the ADGA/Helen Staver Foundation are tax deductible by the donor and may be sent directly to the attention of Shirley McKenzie at the ADGA office. If you have questions regarding the Foundation, please con-tact Trustee Christen Adels at (724) 843-1412 or [email protected].

2016-17 ADGA Youth Representative

Garrett Otterson 6919 County Road 57

Willows, CA 95988 (560) 517-0771

[email protected] My name is Garrett Otterson. I am 16 and a junior in high school. I have been an ADGA member for the last six years. I own a small herd of 15 or so LaMancha and Toggenburg does. Ever since I joined ADGA I have wanted to become a Youth Represen-tative. I am honored to hold this posi-tion and want to do as much as I can with the youth. I want to get my judges license when I am of age. My love for goats started back at the end of 2009. That year my cousin invited me down to visit her at her fair and watch the dairy goat show. She only had four does there. I helped her with daily chores and cleaning pens at fair and really enjoyed it. I was sad to leave and return to my home and fam-ily. About a week later I got a call and she was asking if I wanted to buy her goats because she was ageing out of 4-H and wanted to share the experi-ence with me. My parents bought her goats for me for my birthday. From that day forward I knew this was my new love and wanted to keep goats in my life for the rest of my life. Dairy goats have helped me find what I want to do for the rest of my life. I want to become a Large Animal vet with a specialty in dairy goats. I plan to graduate high school and get accepted into UC Davis or Purdue for Veterinary medicine. I have started working and doing ride-alongs with a local vet and getting to see what the job entails and I am loving every second of it. I am very serious about this career and want to have a small hobby herd of LaManchas on the side and still do shows. I have been to the past two National Shows and placed in the top ten both times in Intermediate 2 Show-manship class. I have also gone to the last two National Conventions and loved it and want to keep the youth program going. I have learned a lot and want to pass my knowledge to other youth and want to keep learning and teaching the rest of my career in ADGA.

ADGA RESEARCH FOUNDATION

In 1976, the American Dairy Goat Association Board of Directors, at their Annual Meeting, proposed and adopted the ADGA Research Foundation for the purpose of promoting and directing research and educational ac-tivities concerning dairy goats. The Foundation is a nonprofit corporation that serves as an independent arm of ADGA under the management of its Trustees with its own banking accounts. The Foundation conducts its own business and is accountable to ADGA only for finances with an annual full report of its activities. Trustees are appointed by the ADGA Executive Committee and serve for one year or until replaced. All correspondence, including proposals for research based on the annu-ally scheduled call, should be sent to Lisa Shepard, Administration Staff ([email protected]) and will be answered promptly. If a research proposal is approved and funds are available, money will be granted. No further approval from the ADGA Board of Directors is re-quired. Tax-deductible donations, designated for the ADGA Research Foundation, may be sent directly to the ADGA office. ADGA Research Foundation Grant Request forms are available from the Foundation Secretary and from ADGA.

2016 Mary L. Farley Award John B. White

The Mary L. Farley Award is granted to those who perform outstanding work on behalf of the dairy goat industry. At the 2016 Annual Conven-tion in Austin, Texas, this prestigious award was presented to John White. John was born into a farming family in Northern Illinois. As a future farmer, he raised a menagerie of various farm critters, including a special project of Rheas, and continues today to maintain an interest in a large variety of farm animals. Prior to becoming involved in major ADGA work, he spent many of his adolescent years working in various positions on commercial goat dair-ies in Wisconsin and California. John worked at Idelmar for Paul Ash-brook, Sunshine for Daniel Considine and Stephen Considine and at Redwood Hills Dairy for Jennifer Bice. He was a support person at one of the first classification training sessions in Wisconsin in 1975. His gentle nature endeared him to the people he worked for and his knowledge of dairy goats and his generosity in sharing his expertise and knowledge with dairy goat breeders has made him a popular and memo-rable judge and appraiser.

John became an ADGA member in the early 70’s as a teenager, however, dairy goats were his life from shortly after his birth due to allergies. What started as a family milk supply years ago, turned into a show herd and ultimately a commercial dairy for many years, breeding animals under the One*Oak*Hill herd name. His dairy goats have achieved numerous awards at local, regional, and national shows. The One*Oak*Hill genetics have been very influential and has been the base of many herds. Elected to the ADGA Board of Directors in 2006, John served one term, with two of those years serv-ing on the Executive Committee. John has served as chair of the Spotlight Sale committee, Type Com-mittee and the Herd Book Change Task Force. He earned his first judges license in 1992 and held a continuous license until his retirement in 2001. John became an ADGA appraiser in 1994 and worked until 1998, retired for a few years, and then returned to the program in 2003. He has served as an appraiser for 19 years and this year officially retired from the program. It is in the Linear Appraiser Program that John had done his best work for dairy goats. He has scored in excess of 33,000 animals and has made a major impact on the type of dairy goats that are being bred in the United States today. He has worked passionately and tirelessly in teaching about dairy goat type willingly working extended trips and assignments, well beyond what was normally expected of an appraiser. John and his life partner, Eric Jermain, have carried much of the field work load for the Association during a time when the program has more than doubled in size. Countless members, organizations, universities and the public have benefited from his vast knowledge and his willingness to share it with all. He has the ability to learn, teach, and inspires others.

Director Emerita Award Recipient Linda S. Campbell

Linda Campbell joined ADGA on June 25, 1975. She was first elected to the Board of Directors in 1982 and has served as a District III Director from that time to the present. She is the longest, continuous serving Director now in her 33rd year of service to ADGA. Linda served on the Executive Committee from 1987 to 1996 and again 2004 to 2016. Four of those years she served as President. Linda was featured in the Pioneer Program in 2004 - Her Khimaira Farms has been involved in breeding goats since the 1970’s and has facilitated the sale of quality genetics around the world through exporting dairy goats. She has pro-vided email distribution lists through her Khimaira web hosting for all of the ADGA Committees including the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. She provides these services at no charge to ADGA. Linda is also known for her many, many years of promoting dairy goats on the national

level to the USDA, APHIS, and ARS. She has served as President of the recently founded American Goat Federation which works to unite the goat industry to serve as one voice on the national level. ADGA has relied on Linda through the years to help with IM/IT. When there is a problem, Linda is one of the first people to be contacted to help trouble shoot an issue. This year in particular, Linda has done at least a part time work schedule for the IM initiatives. She has taken the lead role in the web redesign and coordinated with vendors and also done a large amount of the work on the website. Without Linda’s guidance on IM we would not have our current successes. She is an energetic, forward thinking individual. Linda has been a guiding force to the Directors during her tenure on the Board. Many board members and individual members alike have called on her many times for sage advice and words of wisdom. She is well known for her willingness to listen to all sides of an issue with an open mind and offer advice.

ADGA NEWS & EVENTS Fourth Quarter, 2016 22

Daniel Considine has lived his life as an active member of the Dairy Goat Community, promoting dairy goats, the dairy goat industry and the work of the American Dairy Goat Association. As we consider Daniel Considine’s contribution for well over 50 years, as outlined in the paragraphs to follow, there is no doubt that he is worthy of the Distinguished Service recognition. He began his career breeding and raising purebred Toggenburgs in 1956 and joined the American Dairy Goat Association on February 3, 1958. He became a life member in 1983, after 25 continuous years of membership. Currently, Daniel had been a member of ADGA for 58 years and is the 4th longest member of those still living. Daniel was first licensed as an ADGA judge in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1965 and has held a continuous ADGA Judge’s license since that time. At the end of 2015 Daniels completed his 50th year of judging continuing a passion for evaluating dairy goat as well bring opportunity to raise awareness of quality dairy goats around the country. He was first elected to the ADGA Board of Directors in 1977 and has served District IV for 36 years. He has also served as the Association President and on the Executive Committee. Also, Daniel has served as chair or co-chair of the Linear Appraisal, Registration, Finance, Data Processing, National Show Long Range, National Show, National Sales, and Canadian Liaison committees. In addition, he has served on most of ADGA committees over the years, and many for multiple years. Daniel has been so involved in committee work that there have been times he is serving on more committees that anyone else. He actively shares his experience and insight with an eye toward continued improvement. Daniel was in the 2nd Class of ADGA Pioneers in 2004 in Albuquerque. This is program highlighting ADGA members who have forged through the years raising dairy goats and thus have had a significant impact on the industry. In 2014 Daniel's Herd Name Diamond/Sunshine was recognized as an ADGA Historic Herd Name. His service over the years has been backed by his continuous use of ADGA Programs and success in breeding top dairy goats. No other herd name in the history of ADGA has won as many premier breeder awards from the ADGA National Show as the Sunshine Herd. There are 537 animals with the Sunshine herd name that have earned the Superior Genetics designation, 54 animals with the Sunshine herd name with the GCH prefix, and 8 animals with the Sunshine herd name with the CH prefix in the ADGA data base. Many of Daniel's earliest permanent champions were Diamond Sunshine prefixed, including the first National Champions, both Toggenburg and Alpine. The Diamond Sunshine herd name had 6 Alpine permanent champions, 17 Toggenburg permanent champions and 3 Nubian permanent champions. Daniel’s en-dorsement of and participation in each of ADGA's three per-formance programs can be seen as one if not his most significant accomplishments. He has either chaired or served on each of the three supervisory committees over the past fifty years. The data shared above about his animals certainly supports this premise. 2016 marked Daniel’s 61st consecutive year as an exhibi-tor at the Wisconsin State Fair, making him one of the longest term livestock exhibitors there in history. This is just one of many show venues in which he has shown his goats.

Robin Saum is a life member of ADGA. She was first elected to the ADGA Board of Directors in 1992 and has served as a District IV Director from that time to the present. She is the second longest, continuous serving Director now in her 24th year of service to ADGA. Robin was re-elected in 2016 to her 9th term. She has served 15 years on the Executive Commit-

tee from 2000-2002 and from 2003 to pre-sent. During 2003 - 2004 Robin served as President Pro Tem for ten months. Subse-quently she served another nine years as President in three sets of the maximum al-lowed 3 continuous years. Robin is one of the longest serving President's in the history of the Association. Her service to the Association has involved chair, co-chair, or assistant chair on various committees over the years including Advanced Judges, Annual Meeting, Awards, Constitution & Bylaws, Finance, Information Management, Judges, Judges TC, Guernsey Breed Recognition Task Force, National

Show, Linear Appraisal, Scholarships, Shows, Spotlight Sale, and Type. Her quick response and involved manner has allowed committees to work more effectively. She has worked to develop an excellent understanding of the rules of the Association and shares that knowledge in her committee work. Robin is a licensed ADGA judge who can be found judg-ing shows every year. First licensed as a apprentice in 1987, this year is her 30th year of judging. Robin obtained the status of advanced judge and in 2011 judged the ADGA National Show in West Springfield, MA. The American Goat Federation was formed to promote and facilitate the development of all segments of the goat in-dustry including dairy, meat and fiber, by encouraging sound public policy, enhancing production and marketing of goat products, and promoting research beneficial to our member organizations and all producers. Robin served for several years as one of the representatives of the Dairy Goat industry and worked to bring focus and stable management to the new organization. Robin joined Dr Joan Dean Rowe and/or Dr Paul Plummer as ADGA Representatives at USDA meetings held by Kevin Shea, Administrator of Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in Washington DC. These initial meetings were coordinated by Robin at the invitation of Director Shea to enhanced the working relationship between USDA, ADGA and the dairy goat industry. Participation in all of ADGA programs and most services including DHI production testing, Linear Appraisal, shows, judging, superior genetics, DNA testing and ADGA Plus has allowed Robin to serve as an advocate for these programs encouraging others to participate. She has used this firsthand knowledge to guide members to receive greater benefits from membership in ADGA. Robin is the third generation in her family to raise dairy goats. Her grandmother had mostly Swiss breeds and some Nubians which she raised under the Snowflake, Vitamilk, and Kitchamakin herd names. Her mother raised Saanens and Toggenburgs when Robin was a child then switched to LaManchas in the mid 1970ies. After graduating high school Robin had Toggenburgs for a few years under the Saum's Oak herd name. In 1991 she purchased two Saanen does and began raising them under the Snowflake herd name. Clearly Saanens are her favorite breed. In 2015 she added a Nigerian Dwarf which, of course, is all white and Robin lovingly calls Sophie Saum.

NWODGA and Redwood Hill Farm & Creamery recognized as Friends of ADGA

The Northwest Oregon Dairy Goat Association has offered an annual conference for more than 25 years benefiting all dairy goat breeders within the Pacific Northwest, Idaho, and Northern California; additionally Alaska. The NWODGA annual conference has been in the forefront of dairy goatherd management including disease control, feed management, and Bio-Security; along with DHIR/DHIA produc-tion test, Artificial Insemination, ADGA Linear Appraisal, dairy goat products, and dairy goat shows. NWODA reached out to UC Santa Rosa, Dr. Joan Dean Rowe, regarding important health issues in the 1990s regarding the impact of CL, and control application. Few dairy goatherds in district VII experience CL and are more prepared to deal with CL should it arise. Few if any breeders have experienced trans-mission from goats to humans through their educational effort.

Their effort expanded WSU’s testing program and development of vaccine. NWODGA has supported these activities, but without Chris Strickland’s effort and dedi-cation the level of perfection would not have been there. Chris has overseen these activities from the meal requirements to travel arrangements along with coordinating other volunteers’ service. Jennifer Lynn Bice, Founder & Managing Director of Redwood Hill Farm & Creamery has been a member of ADGA for more than 25 years.

In 1978, Jennifer took over her family’s farm and grade A goat dairy, which her parents first started in Sonoma County in 1968. Along with her late husband, Steven Schack, Jennifer expanded the business to produce a greater variety of goat milk products, and diversified the dairy goat breeding program. Redwood Hill Farm & Creamery is, to this day, operated by Jen-nifer along with more than 75 dedicated employees. Promoting the benefits of goat milk products and developing a genetics program of excellence remain her top priorities, and this commitment has positioned Redwood Hill Farm at the forefront of the dairy goat industry. Their ongoing financial support of ADGA National Shows, Conven-tions and Spotlight Sales has helped to make these events suc-cessful. They have contributed to the promotion and underwriting of these events for over 20 years, many times as the main finan-cial donor. Jennifer has also been a leader to ADGA through her committee work, judging, and promotion of dairy goats.

FROM THE PERFORMANCE PROGRAMS MANAGER

A DGA con-tracts a discounted rate for

three types of DNA testing, identity markers (which can include parentage verification), Alpha S-1 Casein, and G-

6-S. There are important changes with regard to the G-6-S and Casein test offerings. Per recent Board action, these laboratory results can be added to the pedigree information with the breeder’s permission. Breeders (only) may submit a Publicity Request Form found at https://form.jotform.com/63105591261147. Alternatively, breeders can either contact [email protected] directly or provide a signed statement with the registration ID’s and the test type they wish to make available for tests that have been completed. Unregistered animals will need to be registered for this update

to be applied as they need a registration ID and requests need to be made on a per individual animal basis. Breeders can also select the publicity option to make the results available at the time of order-ing. Results will be maintained in the database on all testing results that have been pro-vided to ADGA should breeders decide to choose to include results in the future. Following are some common questions when ordering: I’ve already had my animal tested for another test type. What are my op-tions? For most samples at the lab, it is possible to just request the new tests without addi-tional sampling. If the lab has exhausted the material with other testing, they will let us know and you would need to re-sample and submit. We would generate new sub-mission materials in this case and send to you.

A previous owner has had my animal tested for another test type. What are my options? Same as above but we would need per-mission to add the test type to the sample on file as they were the submitter of that sample. Will results from other labs, or tests that I ordered directly through VGL be accepted? The Board adopted a “Grandfather Clause” which states the following. For a period of one year following the imple-mentation of this policy, animals tested prior to implementation shall be entitled to have test results included in the ADGA database upon submission of paperwork confirming test results issued by the labo-ratory that conducted the test. Information provided by the laboratory must include the animal’s registration number, OR breed, gender, date of birth and tattoo in-formation in addition to test results. Upon breeder request, this information may also be included in the animal’s permanent re-cord as outlined above.
