I am a Writer

This week in school we going to be doing some more work on The Great Fire of London. To reach for the stars and make our writing really interesting for the reader we need to use adjectives. These give us more details to describe something, so we can use our imagination to picture it in our minds. For each picture below, write some adjectives to describe things in it. Challenge yourself to write as many words as you can (you could describe things by how they look, might feel if you touched them, smell, taste, feelings). The first one has been done for you.

For example: Black and white, crowded, cramped, crooked, wooden, old, dirty, smelly, tall, Tudor houses, alleys, streets, thatched roof, close together.

Now do your own for these pictures: Diary and quill London on fire Lots of people became homeless

This is Samuel Pepys. He was an eye witness for The Great Fire of London. We know about what happened in London because of all the details he wrote in his diary.

Use these sentence starters to help you write a diary entry from the fire (it’s started on 2nd September 1666 and lasted for 4 days and 4 nights) imagine you are walking down through London: I could see………. so I ……… The ……… fire was like……. and it was ……… I could hear ……. because ………. The smell was……… The people were…….. and they ……….. All the buildings were on fire, including the ………… I felt ………. I buried my special …………… so that ………. After that I …………. If the fire carries on burning……. When the fire is over………

In year 2 we are developing our editing skills to improve our standard of writing. To edit your work use a different colour pencil to add detail, correct incorrect spellings, add missing punctuation to your Samuel Pepys diary writing. Always read it back and ask yourself ‘does it makes sense?’ ‘Can I reach for the stars and make it even better in any way?’

I am a

Mathematician

Challenge Time

I am an Artist: Make a street sign. The fire first broke out in a bakery on Pudding Lane. If you could choose what would you call your street?

I am a geographer: Think about how much London has changed from 1666. Make a tourist leaflet to advertise modern London. Can you include some drawings of important buildings and features to try and tempt people to visit there?

I am a Scientist and a Researcher: Have a look at the latest report on ReachOut Reporter. Go to explore this story and watch the video. This is a great website to watch the news in a child friendly way. Follow the link: https://www.reachoutreporter.com/

I am a Musician: Learn the ‘Noisy Money in my Purse Song’. Can you add sounds/ actions? https://www.cavclosei.derby.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/Noisy-Money-in-My-Purse-Song.pdf

Use these words to help your child develop a positive attitude to learning; Determined Keep trying Reach for the stars Can you think of another way?
