As we look at Solomon's advice in Prov- erbs as to how we become truly wise, we can see another principle. We should live in awe of God In Proverbs 1:7 we read, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” In the world today information is easy to get. We just Googleit & there it is at our finger tips. Yes, information is plentiful, but the same cannot be said of wisdom. Wis- dom is a lot more than simply knowing in- formation and having a head full of stuff. Wisdom is the ability to discern what is true, what is right, what is of lasting val- ue. It is all about character, about making wise choices. True knowledge, according to the Bible, is about being wise rather than simply being clever or intelligent or well educated. The fact is some extremely clev- er, intelligent & well educated people sometimes do some very foolish & evil things. Some very talented people have messed up their lives. Well then, how do we get true knowledge and true wisdom? The Bible says it all starts with the fear of the Lord”. When we talk about the fear of the Lordwe are talking about honouring and respecting the Lord. To fear the Lord is to live in awe of His power and to live in obedience to His Word. When a person fears God, that is, when they want above all to please Him and hon- our His name, they no longer fear what others might say or think. They are no longer held captive to the pressures of their peers. The fear of God puts backbone into us. It helps us to stand strong and tall even when others make fun of our faith or of our desire to do what is right. Remember, this is what the young man Daniel did, and God blessed him and used him. Yes, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” The opposite of being wise is of course being foolish. The person who thinks they know every- thing, the person who thinks they are always right, who resents discipline, who refuses to learn from others is a fool. Pride can blind us to what reality is. As we look at Solomon's advice in Prov-erbs as to how we become truly wise, we can see another principle. We should live in awe of God In Proverbs 1:7 we read, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” In the world today information is easy to get. We just “Google” it & there it is at our finger tips. Yes, information is plentiful, but the same cannot be said of wisdom. Wis-dom is a lot more than simply knowing in-formation and having a head full of stuff. Wisdom is the ability to discern what is true, what is right, what is of lasting val-ue. When we talk about the “fear of the Lord” we are talking about honouring and respecting the Lord. To fear the Lord is to live in awe of His power and to live in obedience to His Word. CYBERBULLYING – supporting your child online Childhood bullying used to be face-to-face physical and verbal behaviour in the playground, classroom and on the way to and from school. Now online technology and constant connectivity has allowed bullying to harm chil-dren through often anonymous contact or actions. Cyberbullying can happen at any time and leave a child feeling unsafe and alone. Cyberbullying most commonly occurs through: Comments posted in an open online environment such as Facebook. Direct text, email or instant messages online or on a mobile phone. Children can manage cyberbullying with your support by taking the following action: Blocking the person cyberbullying and changing pri-vacy settings. Retaliating or responding to the bully only gives them the attention and power they want. Reporting the bullying. Most websites have online help centres and reporting facilities, and online abuse is in violation of the Terms Of Use of most social network-ing sites. Collecting the evidence. Keeping mobile phone mes-sages and printing emails or IM conversations. Talking to someone they trust like parents or a teach-er. Visiting the Cybersmart Online Helpline (www.cybersmart.gov.au/report.aspx) to chat with an experienced counsellor or calling the Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800.
