READING COMPREHENSION 25
Newspaper report on Snowl Leopards Part 1
Newspaper Report: Text Structure
For our first reading task this week we are continuing to work with the teachers
from the Oak National Academy Online Learning website.
We are working with their Week 9 English lesson 1 on ‘Newspaper report’.
The reading comprehension skill being practised in this lesson is: Text Structure
We are going to answer questions that look at the whole structure of the text
and the how the different sections link together.
This link will take you straight to this week’s lesson:
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/reading-comprehension
Today’s lesson is: Newspaper Report: Reading Comprehension – Comment on
the structure of a text
Lesson 1 of 5 (Oak National Trust Week 9, 22nd June)
Work your way through the activities on the website. Make sure that you watch
the first half of the video by Mr Mac (and his news reporting team) before
answering the reading comprehension questions.
Below you will find copies of the slides from the Oak National Academy ‘Main Activity’.
You may find it easier to read the text and answer the questions using these pages, rather
than working online, as the Google slide show on the Oak National Academy website can
be tricky to use. Do what works best for you.
*Remember to go back to the video with Mr Mac when you have finished
your work so that you can mark your work with him.*
Follow these instructions to help you answer the questions accurately:

WRITING ACTIVITY 15
Write A Newspaper Report on the Snowl Leopard
For our writing task this week we are continuing to work with the teachers
from the Oak National Academy Online Learning website.
We are completing their Week 9 English lessons on ‘Newspaper Reports’.
The skill being practised this week is: Using the key features of a newspaper
report to compose a piece of writing
You will be completing this writing task over 2 days:
Day 1: Planning your writing
Day 2: Writing a newspaper report and editing your work
This link will take you straight to this week’s lesson:
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-use-key-features-in-order-to-write-own-composition-2042b6
The lesson is: To use key features in order to write own composition: Writing a newspaper report
Lesson 5 of 5 (Oak National Trust Week 9, 22nd June)
Day 1
1. Complete the introductory quiz.
2. Watch the first half of the video with Mr Mac (did Ronnie spot the elusive Snowl
Leopard on his recent trip to the Artic circle?)
3. Read the newspaper report on slides 2 to 5 on the ‘Worksheet’ page to help you gather
ideas for your own report and remind yourself of some of the key features of a newspaper
report.
4. Use slides 6 to help you gather ideas for your own newspaper report. Remember to
draw some pictures as well to support your notes!
5. Remember to talk through your plan with someone so you can check that it all makes
sense and that you’ve not missed out any important details.
Day 2
1. If you want, then get yourself into role by dressing up as a reporter. You might even
find a microphone so you can read out your report at the end.
2. Use slides 7 and 8 to help you gather some ambitious words and phrases for your
writing.
3. Use slides 9 and 10 to remind yourself of the key features that you are trying to use in
your newspaper report. Watch the video with Mr Mac @19mins 55 if you want to go
through the key features with him.
4. Combine this information with your picture plan and your planning notes to help you
write the first draft of your newspaper report.
5. Read through your first draft to edit and improve your work (check for things like:
capital letters, full stops, the structure of a newspaper report, inverted commas for quotes,
adverbs. Do your sentences make sense?)
6. Look back at the original newspaper report on Snowl Leopards. Which ideas can you
‘magpie’ to make more improvements to your writing?
5. Return to the video with Mr Mac to mark your work (@21mins 35).
Don’t forget to be proud of your work and share with somebody. This could be someone at
home, emailing it to a relative, emailing it your teacher or uploading it on Twitter and tag
school using @WellingtonPSBD2.
Below you will find copies of the slides from the Oak National Academy ‘Worksheet’.
You may find it easier to read the text using these pages, rather than working online, as
the Google slide show on the Oak National Academy website can be tricky to use. Do
what works best for you.
