In reading, Year 4 are expected to read daily, writing three entries per week in their reading journal. We are looking to build pupils’ ’reading stamina’, therefore, we hope that they read for a minimum of 15-20 minutes. We have plethora texts in school, but would encourage children to read what they enjoy - whether they’re books from home, or the local library. You can support your child by asking them questions about their book, encouraging them to summarise what they have read and expressing their opinion.

Maker Mat activities will be shared via Google Classroom during the first week of the half-term (paper copies are also availa-ble). Spellings and Times Tables will also be uploaded to Google Classroom, with paper copies available upon request.

Please ensure that you practise Spellings and Times Tables with your child in time for the weekly test on a Friday morning. Scores will be recorded in your child’s Reading Journal - please encourage them to bring this to school every day!

How you can help me at home:

You can help me with my reading, ensuring that I read regularly each evening. You can ask me questions about the book I am reading to further my inference and deduction skills. For our curriculum, our host country is Italy. At home we can use our enquiry and thoughtfulness skills, to find out more about the culture of this country.

Our Curriculum PE Mathematics

Writing

Our curriculum topic this half term is ‘Material World’. This is primarily a sci-ence-based unit, in which pupils will learn about the properties of different materi-als, conducting scientific investigations. We will be building upon our learning during the sustainability unit ‘Our Green Earth’, looking at natural and man-made materials, as well as recycla-ble/sustainable materials and the impact of these materials on the environment. Further-developing skills from ‘Our Green Earth’, pupils will learn to group these different materials, based on their properties and purpose.

This term in PE, pupils are going to learn how to play rounders, developing their catching, throwing, striking and communi-cation skills. In addition to this, pupils will be preparing for Sports Day - practising the athletics events that they will be partici-pating in at Finsbury Park.

PE lessons will take place on Tuesday after-noons with our PE teachers, and on Friday afternoons with their class teacher. Please ensure that your child wears their PE kit to school on Tuesdays, and brings kit to change in to on Friday.

In the final units of our Maths learning, Year 4 will learn how to apply the skills they have developed throughout the year when solving multi-step problems. The topics we will focus on are: problem solving with whole numbers and decimals, 3-D shapes and their properties, coordinates, and final-ly, shapes and symmetry. In their problem solving, pupils are encouraged to use their preferred method(s) of calculation, and to devise different ways of solving the same problem. Moreover, pupils will use a com-bination of concrete resources, pictorial and abstract methods to illustrate their mathematical knowledge and understand-ing.

In this final term, we will be learning all about discursive texts, narratives and poet-ry. When writing discursive texts, pupils will write persuasively and will develop their debating skills. When studying narratives, pupils will build upon their superb writing during writing weeks, in which we studied S.F. Said’s The Outlaw Varjak Paw. Please encourage your child to write imaginative narratives at home - we’ve included a writing task on this half-term’s Maker Mat!
