Year 5
Science Booklet
Name:____________________
Task 1
Scientists and Inventors
Choose a scientist or inventor. You could choose one from the list
below or one that you are interested in. Use books or the internet to
find out about their life and work and any interesting facts about
them. Decide how to present your research to tell your friends and
family all about your chosen scientist or inventor. You can be as
creative as you like when presenting your research.
You could:
• Make a poster
• Write and illustrate a book
• Create a quiz, with questions and answers
• Make a PowerPoint presentation
• Create a short film
• Or something else…
You could choose one of the scientists below.
• David Attenborough
• Eva Crane
• Stephanie Kwolek
• Leonardo Da Vinci
• Margaret Hamilton
• Or someone you are interested in
Task 2
An invention
You are to become an inventor and invent a new device or machine
that will make your life easier!
Think carefully about what you want your invention to do. Will it do
your homework at the push of a button? How about a device that will
pack your bag in the morning?
Have fun inventing your new creation.
Draw and label your invention below.
What is the purpose of your invention?

Task 3
The Moon
Task 4
Paper Helicopter Investigation
Make a paper helicopter and investigate the effects of air resistance
and gravity.
A helicopter hovers in the air as its propellers rotate. Use the template
and follow the instructions to create at least two paper helicopters.
Which falls more slowly? Can you count the spins? How could you
record what happens? Can you make a new helicopter that falls more
slowly? Think about the forces of gravity and air resistance, and how
you can use the to make the helicopter fall slower.
Task 5
Materials and Properties
Objects are made from different materials. The materials used to make
an object are chosen for their properties.
Choose an object from around your home. Draw a picture of it and
label the different materials it is made from. Identify the properties
these materials have, and why they were chosen to make the object.
Have a look at this example, then try your own:
Materials:
Metal to conduct heat from the hob and allow the food in the pan to
heat up and cook.
Plastic to insulate against the heat, so that you can hold the pan
without getting burnt.

Task 6
Life Cycle
Choose an animal and find out about its life cycle. Think about how
any stages its life cycle has, and split up the circle below so that it
has section for each stage of the life cycle. Draw and describe each
stage.
Name of animal: ___________________________________________________________
Type of animal (Mammal, amphibian…) _________________________________________
Task 7
Life Cycle Game
Game instructions
Play this fun game with your family to see how much you know
about life cycles. Who will be the first to construct a full life cycle.
You need:
• Life Cycles Game Character Cards cut out into individual
• Life Cycles Game Cards cut out into individual cards
How to play:
• Each player should take a character card. The aim of the game
is to be the first player to construct the life cycle of the plant or
animal on their character card.
• Shuffle the life cycles game cards and place them face down in a
pile. The cards describe the stages of the different animals’ and
plants’ life cycles.
• Players take turns to pick a card from the top of the pile. If the
card describes a stage of their characters’ life cycle, they keep the
card. Of not, the card should be returned to the bottom of the
pile.
• As players collect more cards, they should place them in order to
show the stages of their character’s life cycle.
• The winner is the player who constructs their life cycle first.
Task 8
Science Quiz
Below is a list of the topics we have been covering in year 6. Using
your knowledge of one or all of the topics, create a quiz for a friend
or family member. You should ask between 10 and 20 questions. Make
sure you also make an answer sheet! You might choose to write your
quiz on paper, or you could use a computer. Why not add pictures?
You could draw them yourselves or find images using the computer.
• Space
• Life cycles – amphibians, mammals, birds, reptiles etc
• Materials and properties
• Chemical changes
• Forces
• Animals including humans – life cycle of a human
