May 2019 Dear Parents/Carers, GCSE season is now fully upon us and we wish our Year 11s the very best of luck – every bit of revision will be worth it in the end! This is a busy period in the school calendar – end of year exams are looming for Years 7 – 10 along with college visits, theatre trips and our fantastic activities days at the end of June. July will see us welcoming our new starters for September and celebrating the outstanding achievements of so many of our students at our annual Prize Evening. Year 7 Parents’ Evening will take place on Thursday 13 th June 2019 and please also be reminded that our next ‘Parent Voice’ meeting is at school on Wednesday 19 th June 2019 at 4.00pm; all parents and carers are welcome to attend. For further information in the meantime, please contact Mr Thompson at school. The last day for students this term is Friday 24 th May 2019 with school reopening at 8:50am on Monday 3 rd June 2019. We wish all students and their families a good half term break; especially our Year 11 students who are working immensely hard during this busy exam season. Thank you for your ongoing support. Yours sincerely, Andrea Radcliffe Headteacher Brilliant behaviour for learning! The vast majority of pupils at Hyde show consistently positive attitudes to their learning and work hard with their teachers to achieve the best they can. Occasionally a pupil may disrupt the learning of others with poor behaviour and obviously this is not acceptable; for this reason we have a clear set of sanctions to address this behaviour and our full Behaviour Policy is available on our school website. We do run detentions as part of our behaviour management to allow pupils to reflect on and take responsibility for their behaviour. I would like to take this opportunity to share our reorganised system with parents and carers. If a pupil is behaving in a manner which is not conducive to good learning and does not respond positively to their teacher’s directions to comply with our expectations, they will be instructed to exit the classroom to work elsewhere and will receive a school detention. Detentions will run as shown below and parents will be sent a text message informing them of their child’s involvement. Please note, it is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that we have up-to-date contact details on our system. Detention for Years 7, 8 and 9 Monday 3:00 – 4:00pm Detention for Years 10 and 11 Thursday 3:00 – 4:00pm Any pupils causing ongoing concern may also be allocated to Reflections Plus on a Friday from 3:00 – 4:00pm during which they will have a one-to-one conversation about their progress and behaviour with a senior member of staff. All of our pupils have the right to learn in a safe and positive environment and removal of any disruption from lessons enables us to maintain the calm, harmonious and hard-working ethos that we are so proud of at Hyde. Brilliant behaviour for learning!

Year 7 Black Death Project Groups Huge congratulations to the Year 7 Humanities project groups, for their brilliant work on the Black Death. They have

successfully: researched and verified facts about the disease; organised storyboards; written scripts for a short informative advert and edited their film clips. Well done!

Miss Etchells and Mr Patel

Quarry Bank Mill Trip Year 7 and 8 had a fabulous time at Quarry Bank Mill earlier this month. They had a tour of the Apprentice

House where they discovered about the life of a workhouse child, and had a tour of the actual mill with lots of hands-on fun and learning. The students were

fantastic! Mrs Petrucci

Form College Year 9 went to Greater Manchester Highers’ event ‘Lost in Translation’ at Ashton Sixth Form College, where they took part in Spanish, French, linguistic and Arabic taster sessions! They also had the chance to talk with an employment panel and hear about the many opportunities that a higher education in languages can open up for them. The students came away feeling inspired and having learnt something new.

Year 10 PIE Trips Some of our Year 10 students have been on two

school trips as part of the PIE (Pursuing Individual Excellence) Future Ready programme. The first trip

was to visit the Sharp Project for an interactive workshop and to meet business owners and

workers. The second was to Manchester Metropolitan University for lectures in Sociology; including an international buffet. They also visited

‘Ernst and Young’ one of the biggest financial services groups in the world for a presentation.

The students were incredible!

– THANK YOU!

Hyde on Tour Musicians in school have had a busy few weeks as they prepared for our annual ‘Hyde on Tour’ event at Hyde market. Students performed in assemblies in the week leading up to the concert promoting the event. The concert itself was a huge success and was a great opportunity to share the amazing talent we have in school with our local community. A massive thank you to the students, parents and staff who supported the event. Mr Anthony

We are now arranging installation of the necessary systems to link this with our biometric till payments and we will update you as soon as we are ready to go. ParentPay can already be used for all other payments to school and we are receiving lots of positive feedback relating to how easy this makes signing up for trips etc. If you have any queries or problems logging on please contact Jenny Ford on 0161 366 7533.

Building an alumni community to inspire our students

We are delighted to inform you that Hyde Community College is working with the education charity Future First to build a thriving alumni community. Amongst our former students are a whole host of talented role models who we want to connect with in order to celebrate their success and inspire our current students.

Alumni can be invited into school to offer careers and education advice, mentor students, provide work experience placements and much more besides.

We need you!

Please help us reach out to our former students using your own networks. From doctors to dancers, pilots to plumbers, we need alumni from a range of careers to open our students’ eyes to what’s possible in the

world of work. If you are a former student or know of anyone who would like to support the school please visit the

website below for more details and sign up if it is something that interests you: https://networks.futurefirst.org.uk/signup/hyde

Thank you for your continued support.
