VISUAL ARTS

The Year Eight Visual Art elective have completed a unit of work titled Illuminated Manuscripts. Students explored The Book Of Kells, a medieval text created by Irish monks in 800 AD, and other examples of “Illumination”. The works are intri-cate and use line pattern and repetition combined with calligraphy to glorify religious texts. We used this information to help us create our own Illuminated artwork based on their individual initials, using water color, pen and parchment paper.

From the Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers Year 6 Orientation Day This week the we held our annual Year 6 to Year 7 Orientation Day. The day was a huge success with over 130 future students attending the day. The many varied learning activities that these students experienced on the day will give them a great idea of some of the things on offer here at Richmond River. Thanks to Mr French who coordinated the day and to all our dedicated teachers who took lessons or were involved in some way. Annual Reward Excursions During this last week each year group held its annual reward excursion. From all accounts all the students had a terrific time at the various theme parks that they attended. Well done to all our wonderful students who deserved to go and who behaved impeccably on the day. Academic Assemblies Our formal junior and senior assemblies will be held this week. These assemblies will be our final recognition of student achievement for 2013. I am really looking forward to see first-hand the high calibre of our academic reward recipients. HSC Assessment Procedures Today I spoke with our current Year 12 students about the importance of completing each of their formal assessment tasks in each of the courses they are studying. Each formal assessment task contributes to each student’s overall mark in each course and hence I am reinforcing the absolute need to attend every assessment tasks. If a student is away on the day of a formal assessment they must apply for and hand in a late assessment form to the relevant head teacher if they wish to be considered for completion of assessment. Evidence must be attached with the late assessment form to verify sickness or misadventure. If a student is away due to illness on the day of the assessment the school will require a doctor’s certificate to confirm the absence. If a student is away resulting from a misadventure then some official verification is required to confirm the misadventure. Each application is then assessed on its merits. All this information is contained in the Preliminary and HSC Assessment Book. Enjoy your weekend. Mr Dave Harvey Principal

From the Deputies Formal Academic Assemblies Next Week With the end of the school year fast approaching, next week will see the conclusion of our formal recognition of student achievement with two formal assemblies acknowledging and respecting academic achievement among our students. On Tuesday students in Years 10 and 11 will have their formal academic assembly, while the same will be done for students in Years 7 to 9 on Thursday. Both assemblies will begin at 12:15 p.m. Families of students receiving awards will have already received invitations for the relevant assembly – if you have any queries please contact the school prior to the day of your student’s assembly. Positive Behaviour for Learning Our PBL focus next week will once again be on the importance of acknowledging and respecting the academic achievements of others, in line with the overall theme of our two formal assemblies next week. This is also extremely important as we continue to develop a culture among our students of valuing academic success and the stable learning time on which academic success rellies so heavily. Work is well underway for our calendar of PBL teaching for next year. The emphasis will be on supporting the wide range of whole school programs and initiatives that are in place at Richmond River High School through explicit teaching of expected positive behaviours which will contribute to the success of these programs. Areas to be addressed include emergency evacuation drills, student use of electronic devices as part of their learning, safe and appropriate behaviour at whole school sporting carnivals and, of course, expected behaviours at the different types of formal assemblies held throughout the year. Alongside these themes will be a continuing and ongoing focus on expected behaviour in class and other areas around the school. Study Skills in 2014 During the course of 2013, Richmond River High School began to work with ‘Elevate Education’ in order to present a number of study skills seminars to Years 11 and 12 students in the lead up to their exams. Next year, this working relationship will be expanded to cover not only those times when our senior students are preparing for their formal examination sessions, but also as part of our overall strategy to encourage students to

develop their skills as independent learners, work as a team with their teacher mentors and other students and to make strategic and productive use of all the time they have available to them, whether this be at school or at home. There will also be an emphasis of student goal setting as a means of encouraging students to place greater value on the time they have in class with their teachers. Coupled with this approach to study skills for senior students, Elevate will also present study skills workshops for students in Years 9 & 10 in the lead up to their Semester One scheduled exams. They will also conduct a “Kick Start” program for our incoming Year 7 students, encouraging a more enquiry based approach to learning. Year 8 students will continue to participate in our Personal Interest Project program, coordinated by Mrs Seccombe, which has been presented to all Year 8 cohorts over recent years, and is based on the learning concepts demonstrated through Art Costa’s ‘Habits of the Mind’. Overall, as we wind down to the end of 2013, we certainly look forward to a positive and productive 2014 for all of our students and staff. Wishing everyone an enjoyable and relaxing weekend in the meantime. Mr M Hensley Deputy Principal

River Idol is Back! Many of you who have had older students graduate from our school and even those parents who are ex students will fondly remember River Idol. 2013 sees the return of the talent quest which is truly a part of the tradition of Richmond River. For those unfamiliar with the concept, the style of the show is not much different

from Australia's Got Talent. Students have the opportunity to perform solo or in groups to showcase their skill. Examples of acts include music per-formances, dance, drama acts, feats of strength, stand up comedy, hip hop, and more! All items must be appropriate for a school audience. Students need to register their event at the CAPA staffroom before Monday 2nd December. Perform-ers will need to bring their own instruments if required. Microphones, guitar amps, leads and a drum kit will all be sup-plied by the school.

River Idol will be held on Tuesday 17th December, periods 6 and 7 in the MPU. Students will need to audition earlier in the day to get through to the grand final after lunch. Surprise guest judges will give each act some feedback and at the end of the concert the King/s and Queen/s of The River will be announced and have the fantastic honour of winning the first River Idol to be held for a long time.
