History is a disciplined process of inquiry into the past that helps to explain how people, events and forces from the past have shaped our world. It allows students to locate and understand themselves and others in the continuum of human experience up to the present. History provides opportunities for students to explore human actions and achievements in a range of historical contexts. History encourages students to develop an understanding of significant historical concepts such as: cause and effect, change and continuity, significance, empathy and contestability. History as a discipline has its own methods and procedures. It provides students with an opportunity to further develop their literacy skills as well as learning to critically analyse and interpret sources in order to construct reasoned arguments based on evidence. Students will also engage in research involving traditional methods and ICT. At Kotara High School Years 7/8 in Stage 4 will examine content and develop their skills through the study of topics which include: Investigating the Ancient Past, Egypt or Greece, China, Medieval Europe and a Project Based Learning assignment on The Black Death.

This course continues the development of knowledge and skills already established in Stage 4. The three main strands of study are:
Number and Algebra (NA) Measurement and Geometry (MG) Statistics and Probability (SP)
Each strand is further divided into topic areas which are programmed for 2 - 5 weeks duration. The Working Mathematically (WM) components Communicating, Problem Solving, Reasoning, Understanding and Fluency are important processes which have been embedded into each topic.
Students are required to bring a pen, 5mm grid exercise book, ruler, protractor, set of compasses and calculator to each lesson. The recommended calculator is the Casio fx-82AU Plus and is available to purchase from the school canteen for $24. Access to a laptop computer is also recommended. Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) contributes significantly to the cognitive, social, emotional, physical and spiritual development of students. It provides opportunities for students to learn about, and practice ways of, adopting and maintaining a healthy, productive and active life. It also involves students learning through movement experiences that are both challenging and enjoyable, and improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence in a variety of contexts. Learning in PDHPE is perceived by young people as a credible way of raising and exploring health and physical activity issues of significance and importance to them. Students trust teachers to provide accurate, honest information and advice, and to establish a safe and supportive environment for learning. PDHPE programs best capitalise on this when they are focused on contexts that are meaningful and relevant to young people. Assessment in PDHPE, encourages all students to take responsibility for their own learning and to continue learning throughout life. The knowledge, understanding and skills developed provide a foundation for a wide range of study pathways beyond school and also have applications in a number of vocational areas.
