Prisoner Game

Create 2 semi circles of chairs. Get people to stand behind chairs and then ask for the rest to sit on a chair – there should be some chairs left empty with someone standing behind them. The object of the game is for those standing to always have someone sat in their chair. If they have an empty chair they fill it up by winking at any of the people sitting who leap up from their chair and sit on theirs. If the person standing behind the original chair manages to tap them on the shoulder before they leave they have to stay put.

String Pulling

•  Pick up your string and attach it to your forehead. Walk around room, being led by your forehead. As you walk around ask them to think about how this is making them feel.

•  What sort of character might be led by their forehead?

Page 7: Year 8 Mask Work

Crossing the Circle This is an individual exercise but there will be others working on the same theme as you. The object of the exercise is to cross the circle in a certain style of the teacher’s choice. e.g. cross the circle as if you are on a tightrope crossing the Niagara Falls. One ground rule- the moment they leave the chair they are on the tightrope and are not safe until they have reached another chair on the other side.

Locations

Get into groups of 2 / 3 and devise a short drama – with dialogue – that shows characters crossing the stage using 3 different locations or weather conditions. Each character must also have a clear projection point of where there weight is based (relates to string pulling). How do the characters relate to one another.

Page 9: Year 8 Mask Work

SUCCESS CRITERIA

Copycat

Two lines facing each other, slightly staggered. Person at the end of one line starts to yawn, person opposite copies. Person standing next to the starter copies that person and so on and so forth down the line. Do this a number of times making sure that everyone is doing the same action and that they start to be copied at the same point in the action.

Timing Exercises

Eye under the cup Set up a table with an upturned cup on it. Spread the area with bits of paper, coats etc. Enter one at a time looking for a lost bunch of keys. Happen upon the eye under the cup, play a reaction (try and find different ways of reacting with each pupil) What difference does it make if your reaction is immediate or belated?

Page 18: Year 8 Mask Work

Timing Exercises

Treading in dog muck – very similar to the first one but with different initiating incident. In this exercise there is the whole of the walking off to play the reaction

Page 24: Year 8 Mask Work

LESSON OBJECTIVES

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: TO DEVELOP MASK SKILLS CHALLENGE OBJECTIVE: TO COMMUNICATE A CHARACTER USING PHYSICALITY AND THE MASK.

Page 25: Year 8 Mask Work

STARTER

Golden Rules of Mask work •  Never speak through a full face Mask •  Always turn away from the audience when putting a mask on •  Always aim to face the audience when wearing a Mask •  Don’t wear the Mask on your head like a hat •  Don’t leave a Mask on the floor to be trod on. •  Always clean the inside of your Mask after you have finished using it •  First 3 rules are to do with the creation of the ‘mask world’ and if

broken how it breaks the illusion of performance. The last 3 are to do with Health & Safety and the expense of the masks to replace if broken!

Punch in the stomach

Stand facing Mr Henshaw. When I go “One, Two, Three, Pow!” imagine I have just punched you as hard as you can in the stomach and you have to act out the pain and agony to the best of their ability using face, voice, body, falling over etc. Repeat the exercise but no verbal sound this time. Repeat keeping face to the front at all times. Repeat with a fixed smile on the face.

Page 27: Year 8 Mask Work

Crossing the Stage

•  Get into groups of 5 / 6. •  Get a group to line up at the side of the

room: •  1 – Walk across the room but facing the front, try to make sure this does not

look too strained. Change direction each time you clap your hands but always have them face you with their heads.

•  2 –hold a fixed smile (the bigger the better), and again walk across the room facing front. Repeat with a frown, repeat with an angry face –

•  3 – Work against the faces you are pulling. If they are walking across the room with a fixed smile on their face have them tread in something disgusting halfway through. Keeping the smile on their face they have to show the change in emotional state using their body shape and walk and exit.

Page 28: Year 8 Mask Work

Slow motion tickling fight

•  In Pairs decide who is A and who is B. •  A is going to tickle B. •  B is going to act out the reaction etc and

then tickle A back. •  Both have fixed expressions of frowns on

their faces. •  NO PHYSICAL CONTACT ALLOWED

Page 29: Year 8 Mask Work

Putting on a mask

Look at the mask you have chosen to wear and try to read the expression. Try and pull the same expression with your face. Think about centre of weight and age of character as well. Put the mask on and find a body shape that you think suits the mask.

Page 30: Year 8 Mask Work

Entrances and exits

•  As a long line get the class to cross the
