Recap… Last week we were looking at the Elements of Music

These are the building block of music that make it exciting and interesting to listen to.

You should have completed this table on page 40.

DynamicsIs one element of music we focused on.

It is to do with how loud or quiet the music is.

This week…

• we are going to listen to some music

• use what we have already learnt about the elements of the instruments to answer some questions

You will need to start on page 43 of your booklet.

Task 1

1. Listen to this piece of music and answer the 2 questions on page 43 for EXTRACT ONE.

1. Watch the video and listen to this piece of music called the Mars by the composer Holst and answer the questions on page 44 for EXTRACT THREE .

ANSWERSEXTRACT 1 – Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov

1. Can you identify what instrument is playing the melody? (1)

The melody is played by a flute

2. How are dynamics used in this piece of music to show the movement of the bumblebee? (2)

The dynamics used are loud and quiet to show the been flying closer and further away. Crescendo and diminuendo are used to do this.

The music starts of ___________ and gradually gets __________. The music stays _________ for a short time then gradually gets _________ towards the end of the extract.

ANSWERSEXTRACT 2 – The March of the Trolls by Greig

1. Insert the words below to complete the sentences. These words describe the dynamics that you hear in the extract. (4)

2. The piece of music is called The March of the Trolls. What do you think the composer is using dynamics to show in this piece of music? (2)

The composer uses dynamics to show the Trolls getting closer and how they may have been feeling eg angry.

ANSWERSEXTRACT 3 – ‘Mars’ by Holst

1. What are the dynamics at the very start of the piece? (use Italian terms) (2)

The dynamics are piano and crescendo at the start of the piece.

2. What do the dynamics do when the brass instruments enter? (2)

The brass enter at forte.

3. How would you describe the tempo of the piece? (2)

The tempo of this piece is fast.

4. Name three instruments you can hear at any point throughout the extract. (3)

Any instrument in the orchestra eg violin, trombone, timpani, clarinet, bassoon etc
