KS4 CurriculumAll the subjects you study in Year 9 can be studied at KS4.

Year 9 Design & Technology: Textiles In Year 9 Design & Technology: Textiles, the students build on the knowledge they

have acquired in Year 7 and 8 and develop their Textile skills in preparation for GCSE Design & Technology: Textiles, should they choose to continue their studies into Year 10.

The Year 9 scheme of work is centred around design and make activities that will enable students to explore and improve their designing skills and to learn new decorative and construction techniques with fabric.

Projects include: The Christmas Stocking.The pencil skirtDesign and making of soft furnishings.

Year 9 Design & Technology: Resistant Materials

This will build on the skills & knowledge acquired so far in KS3.

Projects will introduce and prepare students for the format of GCSE Resistant Materials, which is an optional subject for KS4.

The course will centre on a designing and making activities. Students will look at Product Analysis, how to communicate ideas and some more practical and theory based practical tasks. Smaller scale projects will result in students producing a Clock, a Travel Game and an Automata.

Year 9 Design & Technology: Food

In Year 9 Design & Technology: Food, students will build on the knowledge they have acquired in Year 7 and 8 and develop their skills and knowledge in preparation for GCSE Design & Technology: Food, should they choose to continue this in Year 10.

The Year 9 scheme will centre around design and make activities; these will enable students to explore and improve their designing skills and to learn new practical skills.

Projects include:Staple food International cooking and eating Food around the world.

Students may be able to complete a ‘Basic Food Hygiene ‘ certificate.

Year 9 Units of Study: The Art of Comedy, Soap Opera, T.I.E., Exploring Text and the Year 9 Performance Project.

There are many enrichment activities offered through the Arts Production, VIBE Drama Club and opportunities to work with theatre companies and attend theatre visits.

Year 9 Music

• Guitar and Drum Skills – learning to play in small bands.• History of Pop – Listening to music through the decades,

discussing how music has evolved and learning to play key pieces of music.

• Song Composition – writing your own music using a combination of music software's and instruments.

• Film Music – learning how to create different emotions in music and writing music to a film.

• The Music Industry – looking at the professional music industry and creating a group project.

• Performance – looking at performance techniques, taking part in workshops and finally performing as either a solo or ensemble.

Each half term has a focus on a different topic or area of music which is explored through either Performance, Composition or Listening/Appraising skills. For example:

Year 9 Computing In Year 9 Computing you will be focusing on Computer Programming and how computers work.

This subject is not ICT and is quite mathematical.

Year 9 ComputingYou will work on projects which introduce you to how to write computer programs.

You could then go on to do the GCSE in Computing in Year 10. GCSE Computing is now an option for KS4.

The Year 9 scheme of work is based around two main areas: Computer programming and how computers work and calculate numbers (binary).

Year 9 ICTYou will work on a range of projects using different software such as:Web DesignGraphicsDesktop PublishersPresentationsSpreadsheetsDatabases

You could then go on to do the GCSE in ICT in Year 10. GCSE ICT is now an option for KS4.
