1. Read the key text out loud – everyday.

6. Plain paper squares technique – fold a piece of plain paper, break a sentence down into small phrases and write onto the

small squares, gradually cover up the squares with small bits of paper until you know it off by heart, repeat with a new sen-

tences.

7. Copy out ten phrases that you don’t know three times in BOLD letters.

8. Copy out key text phrases and CUDDLE text (count letters, underline double vowels, dot the silent letters, double underline

double letters, look at the double LL in Spanish or liaison in French, exaggerate accents).

9. Colour the key text: green= verbs, yellow = adjectives, red = nouns/names, blue = connectives.

10. Make flashcards – foreign language on the one side, English on the other. Sort into 3 piles – 1 pile you don’t know, 1 pile not

sure, 1 pile you know. Go through the don’t know and not sure pile first each day.

11. Make a song or rap out of the key text - it can be for your ears only or if you are brave enough you can perform it in class.

David lives on the island of Cuba in the capital city called Havana. He loves his sport but

doesn’t think much about music. Here David asks a friend about his opinion on sports

MAMBO AND CHA-CHA-CHÁ

The word mambo means “conversation with the gods” in Kikongo, the language of Central African slaves who were brought to Cuba. Mambo as a music and dance genre developed in Cuba in the late

1930s, combining danzón with traditional African rhythms.

In the 1950s, mambo arrived in New York – and it was everywhere. Dance lessons were advertised in the newspaper, music labels put out mambo records, and New York’s famous Broadway dance hall, the Palladium Ballroom, became a mecca for renowned perform-ers. By 1954, mambo mania had even spread to Europe, while a

new kind of mambo dance – the cha-cha-chá was sweeping through Havana.

SALSA Salsa dancing originated in New York in the 1970s, and incorporated elements of mambo, cha-cha-chá, swing and hustle, as well as Afro-

Caribbean and Afro-Cuban dance styles. But even though salsa dancing technically comes from New York, no one as is famous for it as the Cu-

ban people.

RUMBA Rumba represents Cuba’s African influences, and is one of Cuba’s most celebrated forms of music and dance. The genre is energetic

and soulful, using conga drums, claves, maracas, scrapers and bells. When you listen to rumba, you can’t help but start to dance! Over time, Cuban rumba was influenced by the Son Cubano style

of music and new instruments like the trumpet, piano and double-bass were introduced..

Ballet

Alicia Alonso founded the Cuban National Ballet. She is one of the most fa-mous international ballerinas and died in 2019 at 99 years old. The Cuban

National Ballet is revered across the world. It was funded by the Communist leader Fidel Castro.
