TASK ONE:
You need to conduct online research using Pinterest
(or other sources) to find 3 relevant artists which
reflect your personalised theme.
It is important you take into consideration your media
strengths and choose artworks which will challenge
your abilities to reach your potential in Year 11. In
upcoming lessons you will be reproducing the artists
you have chosen to study.
Use the school Pinterest links below to find quality
artists to support your theme.
COMPLETED BEFORE EASTER
ARTIST REFERENCE RESEARCHTASK TWO:
It is critical that you are able to find basic information online,(for
example, the artists name) as you will now begin to construct
detailed Artist Analysis for 1 of your chosen artists.
You need to access the Artist Analysis from the online curriculum
– see the next slide for detailed instructions on where to find the
guidance sheet.
You should type this up into a word document. You must ensure
you SAVE your work so that you are able to access this in weeks
to come.
ENSURE YOU COMPLETE ALL 5 SECTIONS OF THE WORKSHEET TO THE
BEST OF YOUR ABILITY.
COMPLETED BEFORE EASTER
ARTIST REFERENCE RESEARCH
ARTIST REFERENCE RESEARCHTASK THREE (TODAY TASK):
You should now produce a minimum of a 6 page PowerPoint
presentation showcasing your 3 chosen artists (2 slides per artist). You
need to include an Artist Name, Imagery and your Critical Annotation.
You should select 2 fonts which you intend to use for your all your
coursework boards. (1 for titles/ 1 for text)
You need to set up your PowerPoint correctly so this can be easily
printed on your return to school.
On the top bar select ‘DESIGN’ and then select ‘SLIDE SIZE’ and finally
select ‘STANDARD’.
USE THE NEXT TWO SLIDES AS EXAMPLARS! YOU WILL NEED TO REPEAT
THE EXERCISE FOR EACH OF YOUR ARTIST.

Abby Diamond is an American illustrator and visual
artist, producing abstract artworks predominantly
featuring wildlife and nature. The artwork I have chosen
to reproduce is the ‘Neon Northern Pygmy Owl’ as I
think Diamond’s colourful characterisation of a
somewhat plain bird is playful and unconventional.
The artwork is composed of a focal central bird, the
Northern Pygmy Owl. Although the bird is central, the
owl’s side on positioning and eye line creates an
uneven right balance to the composition. I would
descried the appearance of the Northern Pygmy to be
abstracted and stylised by the use of haphazard
brushstrokes, linear marks and exotic colours. Diamond
has chosen to keep the background minimal, a stark
white surround to intentionally draw the attention
centrally to the owl. However, there are bold colourful
brushstrokes extending and bursting from behind the
bird. I think the extension of colour frames the owl
successfully and this is an element I will consider as I
develop my artworks.
Diamond has a recognisable wet media experimental aesthetic
for capturing wildlife. She is known to use a range of medias;
pens, inks, watercolours paints and dyes. She overlays painterly
marks with refined lines and marks using contrasting black finer
or harmonious coloured fine liners. I have found when
replicating Diamond’s style, it is a challenge to create
haphazard painterly marks whilst remaining in control of the
application of paint media.
I have selected Abby Diamond’s as an influence for my
project, as her artwork displays harmonious colour combination
which contradict the reality of the bird’s natural tones. The
‘Neon Northern Pygmy Owl’ artwork is of particular interest, as
the subject matter relates to my theme ‘Woodland Creatures’.
Diamond’s work has similarities to the artwork of Claudine
O’Sullivan, both artists abstract the natural colouring of the
animals. However, O’Sullivan works primarily in colouring pencil.
As I continue to develop my portfolio, I would like to merge the
style of both these artists. I intend to do this by expanding my
use of media and editing my own photographs by
experimenting with colour. Once I have completed a series of
photo edits, I can work from these using a combination of
media; dyes, watercolour, coloured fine-liners, colouring pencils
and black biro. Furthermore, I will extend my artist research to
gain further reference to inspire the backgrounds of my designs.
