Year 9 GCSE Design and Technology

In Year 9 GCSE Design and Technology you will focus on three main aspects of design: “Creativity”, “Computer Aided Design” and “Craftsmanship”. The projects you do in Year 9 aim to give you the skills needed for your GCSE in Design and Technology. In Years 10 you will do further projects aimed at extending the core aspects of the subject and further prepare you for your controlled assessment in Year 11. In Year 11 you will receive an exam board set Design Brief which you will be required to complete in the course of the year. Year 10 and 11 will also focus more on the theoretical and maths aspect of the course.

Year 9 Materials Technology In Year 9 Materials Technology, you will start the first year of AQA Technical Award in Resistant Materials. These projects are based on your initial preference for the materials that you enjoy using. In Years 10 and 11 you will design and make with a wider range of materials. The course will cover 8 core technical skills, for each of them you will learn to present evidence for assessment. Initially this will be paper based but as the year progresses you will learn to present digital portfolios of evidence.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Health and safety – You will refer to the GCSE text and complete theoretical pages. Work is presented as part of an A4 metal clip bound folder with cover design set as homework. All future theory is stored in the created folder. ASK sheet: Year 9 Totem pole initial making task – Skills based. You will learn to mark out, cut and waste a series of plough grooves around a vertical square section approximately 300mm long. It will be set on a dowel using a further dowel joint to fix it to a base. This will introduce you to the repetitive use of marking out, cutting and wasting tools with the aim of increasing your skill competency. You will learn about the application of finishes and produce an isometric drawing of your design on an A3 page.

Year 9 report 1 starts

9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 ASK sheet: Jigs, Joints and production processes – Outcomes for this unit are: A: mirror and stand. B: metal coat hook. For the mirror stand a wooden stand is made using the laser cutter from mirrored acrylic. The construction of the stand is such that a formally taught process for three different timber joints can be delivered: A finger joint, a mortise and tenon joint and a dowel joint. For the metal coat hook you learn about the use of jigs for repetitive marking out and manufacture of components, using simple marking out jigs and metalcraft bending jigs, together with a brazed joint.

Year 9 report 1 home

17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 ASK sheet: Plastic Pod Project – Design Project. This continues the teaching of using jigs for manufacture. The medium is plastic in conjunction with dye sublimation imaging. The project introduces you to the production of an A3 portfolio to develop and record design ideas. You will learn about batch and sequence production to manufacture a plastic storage pod, jigs and moulds for batch production with a particular focus on press forming. You will design and make a male/female mould and understand the batch forming potential of this production and manufacturing technique, producing a designed outcome from your own specification. You will learn about dye sublimation as an image transfer process

Teamwork project - To learn about working the tools and processes related to working with acrylic and plastics using ICT CAD / CAM. To learn to work as part of a team to manufacture an outcome.

Year 9 report 2 starts

25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 You will apply 2Ddesign to modify an existing CAD drawing of an automaton. They will each produce a personalised outcome however they will be assembled as a part of a team group of 4.You will plan the assembly sequence for the assembly of the cut outcomes.

Brilliant bird feeders – sheet metal folding and nets production project. Students learn about nets and the forming processes related to sheet metal working to manufacture an outcome of an aluminium bird seed feeder. To teach about scale and how to create accurate drawing using a paraline drawing system [technical drawing instruments.]

Year 9 report/Parent Eve Mock Exams Year 9 report 3 starts

33 34 35 36 37 38 39 Students will learn to understand what a net is. They will think spatially to imagine and draw one. They will learn to use technical drawing instruments to draw a measured net. They will cut out and make a car net for marking out and fold practice assembly purposes. They may choose to modify their net to personalise the outcome. They will keep a record of the making process and present it with notes in a power point presentation. They will keep photographs that can be used for the 12 key evidence areas.

During the year students will be set specific materials theory homework task. At this point in the year students will be tested on their theoretical knowledge retention. Students will also commence the construction of their evidence portfolio for Unit 1 that requires them to demonstrate 8 skills: 1-Preparing materials and selecting hand tools for marking out, cutting and shaping. 2-Forming, bending or laminating. 3-Casting or moulding. 4-Permanent and non-permanent joining techniques. 5-Machining and the use of power tools including the use of Computer Aided Manufacture [CAM] 6-Quantity production including quality assurance and quality control. 7-Using finishing techniques. 8-Teamwork.
