Last week we had a look at the Beatles This week we are going to look at different types of music that have become popular from 1990- 2020.

• Started in the 1990s.

• Britpop bands were inspired by some of the great British bands of the 1960s including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and The Who.

• Britpop bands used traditional pop instruments, usually based on 1-2 lead guitars, bass guitar, drum kit and a vocalist.

• It had elements of glam rock, punk rock and indie rock.

• Key Britpop bands include Pulp, Blur, Oasis and Suede.

Features of Britpop

Uses traditional pop instruments: • 1-2 lead guitars; • bass guitar; • drum kit; • vocalists.

Singers sing in their own British accent

No samples/sound effects

Very tuneful lyrics

Based on verse-chorus form

Lyrics based on everyday life

•Very popular in the 1990s but less popular now.

•Tended to focus on singing (rather than playing instruments).

•British and Irish groups included Boyzone, Westlife, Take That, Spice Girls, etc.

•The songs ranged from ballads to dance numbers.

•Songs were often about love.

Ballad A song that tells a story. Often slow and emotional.

Here are the main types of club dance styles that have been used since 1990:

Club Dance Music

Techno Fast, hard beat, usually 130-150bpm.

Few or no vocals.

Little or no chord movement.

Sounds mechanical and electronic.

Jungle Fast tempo, often around 170bpm.

Drum-based.

Short fast notes called break beats play between the main beats which can sound

militaristic.

Later known as drum ‘n’ bass.

House Around 120 bpm.

Very repetitive bass line.

Lots of drum machine sounds.

Off-beat hi-hat patterns.

Looped samples.

Synthesizer riffs.

Sometimes has vocals (or vocal samples).

Garage Around 120 bpm.

Deep synthesized bass lines.

Sometimes vocal sounds are used like percussion (beatboxing).

Trance Around 120-150 bpm.

Very repetitive sound.

Uses electronic sounds and lots of effects.

Builds ups layers gradually.

Slow chord changes over a fast beat.

Meant to make you feel like you’re in a trance.

Ambient Slow, sometimes jazzy.

Usually produces a relaxing effect.

Often atonal.

Very repetitive percussion giving a hypnotic feel.
