To introduce parents to Woking High School’s KS4 curriculum for 2019-21;

To explain the Options process;

To inform you about the range of courses on offer;

To answer any questions that you may have.

Today students have received:

• Presentation in assembly;

• Options Booklet;

• Flow chart for the online process of selecting subjects.

Tomorrow students will receive: • An email to say SIMs Options Online has gone

live.

Key Stage Four Curriculum Compulsory Subjects:

– English – GCSE Language, Literature 8 hours.

– Mathematics 8 hours – able Mathematicians will be offered the chance to study GCSE Statistics and Further Maths.

– Science (Trilogy or Triple) 10 hours or 12.

– Students will also follow a course of Recreational PE, which will result in a technical award for most students.

– PSHE, Citizenship and Careers.

– Five hours allocated to each subject;

• Students can choose any of the subjects, regardless of what they have studied before.

Please be aware that there are some subjects which cannot be chosen in conjunction. These are: • GCSE PE and PE BTEC. • Computer Science and Information Technologies

(Technical Award). • GCSE Food Nutrition and Hospitality and Catering

What are Technical Awards and BTECs?

• Vocational learning qualifications.

• Vocational courses provide a different type of course and a different type of qualification.

• Worth the same as a GCSE.

• 25% - 50% exam.

• Very clear progression routes from Level 2 to Level 3 (post-16).

Terminal exams.

NEA (Non-examined assessments)

• Internally assessed

• Externally moderated

Reformed GCSEs:

• All subjects have now been reformed and they will be graded on a scale from 1 to 9.

• 1 is the lowest and 9 the highest.

• 4 = Standard Pass 5 = Strong Pass.

• Students will need to re-sit English and Maths if they do not achieve at least a 4.

Parental involvement Discourage students from:

• Copying friends’ choices.

• Choosing courses because they like the teacher.

• Choosing a subject just because it is new.

• Choosing a subject because others think they should.

Encourage students to:

• Consider their post-16 plans.

• Choose courses they find interesting.

• Choose subjects that they are good at.

The parental approval button on the SIMs application does not work!

• Parents and students will be able to book a meeting with Mrs Walter week beginning 11th February and week beginning 25th February during the day or after school. Mrs Walter will also have appointments at the Year 9 Parents’ Consultation Evening. All appointments to be made by contacting Mrs Allen in the school office.
