Preparation

(A Message from Mr. Page)

These rehearsal examinations are an important assessment of your progress so far in GCSE and BTEC

subjects. They are therefore extremely important to your progress in Year 9. You should therefore be

ensuring that you do your best in all of your subjects.

How to use this booklet

STEP 1

Prepare a revision timetable. Use this Revision Guide to list the subjects you will revise each evening

between now and the end of the exams. Then use the Revision Planner in the back of this booklet

to list the exact topics you'll look at each evening.

Make sure you cover every topic by the exam.

STEP 2

Don't just read your notes; write out in your own words the key points to remember. Turn them

into a picture if possible. Make up rhymes to help things stick in your mind. Get a friend to test you

when you think you're ready. This will help to make things ‘stick’.

STEP 3

Tick off each topic in this booklet as you learn it and ensure that you know when each exam is.

STEP 4

Remember when you go into the examination that you can only do your best. Relax, give it all

you've got and then check your answers through. Don't stop working until the teacher tells you that

the time is up!

ALL the best!

Mr. Page

what it will be like in your final examinations in May/June 2020!

If you are not scheduled to be in exams, you should go to your normal timetabled lesson.

No bags, coats or pencil cases should be brought into the Exam Hall.

There is to be no communication in the Exam Hall.

‘Practices.’

The exam lasts 1 hour 45 minutes and will be made up of any of the following modules:

The Structure of Questions:

a) Style questions will ask you to outline three simple points about a given topic. Make sure

you give three points but they do not have to have explanation or examples.

b) Style questions will ask you to ‘Explain’ with two reasons. Make sure you give two reasons

and each reason needs example/evidence from what you have learned or development.

c) Style questions will also ask you to ‘Explain’ with two reasons. You must give two points,

each point needs development/ evidence/example and you must make a separate

reference to a source of wisdom and authority (The Bible).

d) Style questions will ask you to evaluate a phrase or quote. You need to give coherent

points that show your knowledge of all the elements of the question, each point needs

extended development (chains of reasoning) showing that you can deconstruct an

argument, referring to more than one point of view AND you need to add a conclusion

that expresses YOUR point of view. Save some evidence/example/quote for your

conclusion.

Sources of Information

Attend ALL revision sessions offered by the PTE department.

Learn key definitions in each topic by creating definition cards and going through them

every day.

Ask your teacher for some practice exam questions.

Revision notes which are short and snappy are essential. Try to use techniques which

are useful for you- try the look/cover/write way of memorising and create mind maps for

each of the topics you need to revise.

Ask before the exam if you are unclear on any point and need it explaining again

Make sure you revise each topic in enough depth - you will need to write in quite

some detail (especially in c) and d) questions) if you are to secure all the marks

available.

Pay close attention to the detail of the question, make sure you actually answer what

is being asked for.

SCIENCE

Your science examinations will consist of one paper for each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics

regardless of which set you are in. Students studying separate sciences will receive the same

number of papers but the content of the papers will differ slightly due to additional content

covered in lessons.

Biology

The Biology papers for both GCSE Biology and GCSE Combined Science (Biology), will assess the

same topics. The GCSE Biology paper will be sat at a higher tier level, whereas the GCSE

Combined Science (Biology) paper will be assessed at both foundation & higher tier levels (see

diagram above). The following topics (from the AQA specifications) will be assessed in both

papers:

Chapter 1 – Cell Biology

Chapter 3 - Moving and Changing Materials

Chapter 4 – Health Matters

Chemistry

The Chemistry papers for both GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Combined Science (Chemistry), will

assess the same topics. The GCSE Chemistry paper will be sat at a higher tier level, whereas the

GCSE Combined Science (Chemistry) paper will be assessed at both foundation & higher tier levels

(see diagram above). The following topics (from the AQA specifications) will be assessed in both

papers:

Revision Opportunities

The Science Department are providing many different opportunities to support you and your

revision during the examination season. You should look to embrace these opportunities on offer

to you as the Science Department want you to achieve your personal best!

In the lead up to the rehearsal examinations you can attend support sessions on Thursday after

school in Room 233. These sessions will help you clarify any misunderstandings and allow you to

ask questions to improve your knowledge of subject content. A subject specialist from each area

of Science will be available at all these sessions.

Homework Club is held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursday in Room 218. At this club you

can be supported with your revision homework, as well as having access to computers to

complete any online homework set.

Preparing for your exams

In some of your science exams (Chemistry & Physics), you will be provided with a short data

sheet. In Chemistry, this will be a periodic table and in Physics this will be a short list of

equations. It is important that you look at these before your exams (they are included in the

specifications linked in this document). By reading up on the resources you are given, you will be

able to establish what equations your will need to learn from your taught lessons and which will

be provided to you. This will save lots of time for the future and avoid any confusion in the

examination.

You will also need to ensure that you have a Casio calculator (allowed types specified in the

school planner) for your examinations. It is essential that you know how to use your calculator

properly for the exams, so you should look through the calculator’s manual or use one of the

many shorter guides available on the internet. You are free to use your calculator in any

examination that the Science Department sets.

Finally, you will need to ensure that you have all the expected equipment for learning in the

examination. It is important to have a sharp pencil and ruler for drawing graphs and diagrams, as

well as a rubber in case you make any mistakes.

Information for Parents

The following is a checklist of things you can do to support your child with revision.

1. A dedicated quiet space with good natural light or lighting is best for studying,

with no distractions. If you have other children who are not studying for

examinations, make sure that they know the importance of revision time.

2. Ensure that your son or daughter has a break from their studies. It’s important

that they take regular breaks during the study periods.

3. Be around as a 'feeding station' – keep your child fuelled! However, not too many

sugary snacks and junk food.

4. Offer to help with testing. Testing them helps to make the information ‘stick’!

Also, offer your support with revision.

5. Spot the signs of stress and work with your child to keep them calm. Remember,

some stress is not actually a bad sign; it shows that they care and will help them

to be focussed to do well.

.

6. Know your son or daughter's revision timetable. Encourage them to tell you about

what they are studying.

7. Know the date and time for each exam (see exam timetable) and incorporate this

into the revision plan. Make sure that they have the correct equipment they need

for the examination (calculators, rulers etc). Know what they are not allowed to

take in to the examination. This gets them into good habits for A-Level

examinations

8. If your son or daughter has a medical condition during exam week make sure that

the Academy knows about it.

9. If there is a family crisis, ensure that your son or daughter's teacher know about

it, since the additional stress can affect your child's exam performance.

10. Make sure that your child is using the internet to study and not as a resource to

give the appearance of study!

Exam Day Checklist!

exam? Tutors will have all of this information.

4. Calculator and spare batteries (Do not count on these being provided! There are

not enough to supply every student sitting a large examination).

5. Equipment for the examination over and above what has already been mentioned

e.g. protractor, compass, highlighter pen etc

6. Clear carrying case – this is expected in the final GCSE examinations. Let’s get

into the right habits.

7. Bottle of water with the label removed. This is expected in the final GCSE

examinations. Let’s get into the right habits!
